Types of sea stones
Those pebbles that we all love to play with on the beach are real rocks, witnesses to prehistoric times. Light porous pumice is the remains of petrified volcanic magma, frozen far from the eruption site and picked up air - hence the numerous pores. The names of sea stones that are smoother and heavier are basalts and tuffs. They were formed when lava came out of a volcano. And the heaviest sea stone - granite - originated in its very crater.
The shiny, egg-shaped, rounded granite blocks we see on the beach are a durable and shiny (thanks to a mixture of mica, quartz and feldspar) example of volcanic rock. Monuments and obelisks are erected from it, and it is in demand by builders and designers. Other finishing stones - basalts, tuffs of different shades - are excellent for facing surfaces. Almost any sea stone can be used for applied or decorative purposes.
On the beach you can also find samples of semi-precious minerals - syenites, porphyrites, chrysolites. These beautiful sea stones are used to create jewelry and costume jewelry. The favorite of healers, chalcedony, is also found there. Even more ancient than rocks, these stones also come from volcanic craters.
Sea stones - description and composition
The composition of sea pebbles is mainly sandstone. Sometimes shell rock is added to it - the remains of ancient sea mollusks. Other rocks are composed of limestone and marl—the compressed remains of microscopic ancient organisms. A soft sedimentary rock called slate is the product of fossilized mud from ancient swamps. Its age corresponds to the Jurassic period.
Over millions of years, under the influence of high temperatures and many natural factors, such sea stone as limestone changed its crystal structure to marble, sandstone to jasper, etc. Thus, we have real wealth under our feet!
But let’s return to our pebbles - those that were brought as souvenirs from the sea coast and, at best, decorate a home aquarium, and at worst, gather dust on the mezzanine. But they can be used creatively; there are an inexhaustible number of possible uses. If your own creativity is lacking, use our ideas!
Which countries does it wash?
The Mediterranean Sea is named so due to its location - among the continents (lands). The waters of this sea wash the coasts of more than 22 countries from west to east, including: Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.
The coastal area of the sea is represented by many islands, varying in area and population, the largest of which are considered:
- O. Corsica;
- O. Balearic;
- O. Sardinia;
- O. Sicily;
- O. Cyprus;
- O. Crete.
The Mediterranean coastline has many independent water areas - seas: the Ligurian, Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, Black, Ionian, Azov, Balearic, Aegean, Cretan, Levantine, Libyan and Alboran seas.
How to use stones
They look very beautiful in combination with plants, almost any kind. If you line the surface of a flower pot with stones, this will not only prevent the soil from drying out, but will also look very stylish. In addition, crafts made from sea stone, made with your own hands, are as popular as any hand-made item these days.
A garden bed decorated with stones will look no less wonderful. For landscape design masters, they are truly an irreplaceable material, especially in combination with fancy driftwood and grass.
Flowerpots or flower pots can be decorated by gluing their dry, grease-free surface using reliable glue with flat pebbles of a suitable size. The same flat small stones will make an original stand for hot dishes - they should be laid out with glue on an ordinary stand-napkin from the store. If you can find the right amount of white pebbles, you will get the perfect stand. But you can also take colored ones, and combine them or come up with a pattern.
If you have a lot of stones, but they are all different colors and don’t look good next to each other, make several coasters and paint them with acrylic paints in the color of your choice (let’s say black).

Decorating the interior of the apartment
Using the same principle, you can make a rug for the bathroom or for the threshold. It is best to stick the stones onto a rubber base, which can be used as a regular commercial mat. By placing your feet on this exclusive product, you massage active points and improve your health.
Another useful element of the hallway interior is a shoe stand in the form of a flat tray into which a layer of stones is poured (even without glue). Original and practical! An exclusive floor lamp “from the Stone Age” can be made by drilling several round stones and placing them like a child’s pyramid (large ones at the bottom for stability) on the metal leg of a disassembled lamp.
If you have already decided to decorate the hallway in a “stone” style, try decorating the frame of a wall mirror in a wooden frame with pebbles. It should turn out very stylish and unusual. The gaps between large pebbles are filled with small shells and stone chips.

Other ideas for the garden and kitchen
Let's go to the kitchen. What crafts made from sea stones are possible here? An alternative version of the protective screen (as opposed to the usual tiles) is the same pebbles laid out on the surface of the wall. It costs nothing for craftsmen to unscrew standard handles from kitchen cabinets and replace them with flat stones. You just need to take care of the reliability of the fastenings.
Now let's go back to the garden. In addition to the beds, paths are laid with stones, and if there are enough of them, they build fences, original decorative fountains, and even use them to create furniture. For example, as the base of a garden bench.
Another option for using this wonderful natural material is decorative figurines and garden sculptures. Here, nothing limits the flight of creative imagination. The stones are grouped, glued, painted, decorated with whatever your heart desires. Crafts from sea stones, photos of which you see in this article, can be made by anyone.
As a result, we see bright ladybugs, frogs, caterpillars, snails... You can make “vegetables” and “fruits”; “mushrooms” are especially popular, placed in different corners of the garden. Large stones of suitable shape are painted in the form of tigers, sharks, crocodiles, dogs, cats and even fairy-tale gnomes or elves. Decorative pots or buckets filled with “strawberries” or “apples” made from painted stones will serve as an original decoration for the garden.
Natural characteristics of the Mediterranean Sea
The Mediterranean Sea has an area of 2965.5 thousand square meters. km. The average depth of the sea is 1,500 m. The greatest is 5,092 m and is located in the depression of the Ionian Sea (the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula). The total length of the sea is 3,800 m.
Salinity level of some seas:
- Black Sea - 18%;
- Adriatic Sea - 36%;
- Aegean Sea - 37%;
- Ligurian Sea - 38%;
- Mediterranean Sea - 39%.
4.1 Climate
The word “climate” is translated from ancient Greek as “slope” and refers to the inclination of the sun’s rays in relation to the earth’s surface. Climate is a long-term, established weather pattern, as opposed to weather conditions, which are changeable.
Climatic conditions are determined by the location of the sea - the subtropical zone determines this climate into an independent type “Mediterranean”.
For countries washed by the waters of this sea, winter is characterized by a decrease in atmospheric pressure, which leads to precipitation and storms. During this period, a cyclone hangs over the sea, accompanied by cloudiness, and winds intensify in different directions. The height of the waves can exceed 8 m. In summer there is an anticyclone, the pressure rises and during this period clear, sunny, not rainy weather prevails.
The temperature in the southern part of the sea in January ranges from 14 to 16 degrees, in the northern part - from 7 to 10 degrees. In summer (August) the average air temperature is 22 - 24 degrees in the northern part and up to 30 degrees in the southern regions.
Air humidity in summer is 50 - 65%, and in winter from 65 to 80%. Cloudiness in summer is from 0 to 3 points, in winter – 6 points.
Hot cities: Larnaca, Limassol, Tel Aviv and Antalya. In these regions, the water temperature in the summer months reaches 27 degrees. Next come the cities with water temperatures of no more than 25 degrees: Valencia, Malta and Heraklion. The coasts of Barcelona, Athens and Malaga are considered even less hot (up to 22 degrees of water).
4.2 Bottom topography
The bottom relief of the Mediterranean Sea is represented by rapids, basins, ridges, depressions, bays and volcanic cones. The sea basin is divided into Western and Eastern parts. Thus, the bottom of the western basin is more flat, and the bottom of the eastern basin has depressions and ridges stretching from Cyprus to the Apennine Peninsula.
Here, under the water column, there are cones of active and extinct volcanoes and tectonic depressions. Thus, the deepest place in the sea is the Hellenic Trench, 5121 m deep. The bottom of the sea is rich in deposits of rock salt, potassium and sulfur. Natural gas and oil are produced here.
The largest bays of the Mediterranean Sea:
- Valencian;
- Lyonsky;
- Genoese;
- Taranto;
- Sidra or Greater Sirte;
- Gabes or Little Sirte.
Interestingly, at the bottom of the sea there are many remains of ships, the exact number of which, to this day, has not been established.
4.3 Water
The amount of water evaporation in the Mediterranean Sea exceeds the amount of precipitation, since the sea is surrounded by countries with arid climates. The water deficit is replenished by North Atlantic waters entering through the Strait of Gibraltar. During the process of evaporation, the salinity and density of water increases, which settles at depth, which makes this water area warmer. Depending on the season, the density of water changes. Interestingly, the Mediterranean Sea is one of the warmest and saltiest seas.
Water circulation occurs due to wind currents. The current speed in open sea areas reaches up to 1 km/h, in the straits – from 2 to 4 km/h. Water transparency is from 50 to 60 m. The water has a rich blue color.
4.4 Ebbs and flows
Does the sea have ebbs and flows (periodic fluctuations in water levels up and down as a result of changes in the position of the sun and moon relative to the Earth)? Yes, they are not large, on average from 1 to 2 cm in both directions. This is due to the fact that the sea is cut off from the Atlantic by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar and, accordingly, the gravitational force of the moon does not act on it.
You can read more about the ebb and flow of the tides on the Wikipedia pages https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebb_and_flow
Also, the tides are influenced by depth, water salinity, atmospheric pressure, and coastal topography. The highest tides are observed in the bay called “Gabes”, which is located in the northern part of Africa and this is due to its huge shape (100 km in length and width).
Peak tide is when the sun and moon are either on the same side of the Earth (new moon) or on opposite sides (full moon) and the gravitational forces of these objects are combined, which affects the appearance of tides.
You can find the forecast of Mediterranean wave heights and tides on the Mediterranean coast of Israel on the website of Oceanographic and Limnological Research https://isramar.ocean.org.il/isramar2009/TideHadera/default.aspx
Making crafts with your child
But what to do when it’s winter outside, the summer joys of the country are forgotten, and yet at home there are a bunch of cute stones lying around that you just want to put somewhere! Try doing handicrafts with your child. This exciting activity will not only diversify the long winter evenings, but will also leave you with wonderful souvenirs, one look at which will lift your spirits.
What kind of crafts can you come up with from sea stones? Yes, the most diverse! The list of ideas is almost endless! For example, you can make a gnome or even a whole family of gnomes (or gnomes). If you do them in the same style, then on New Year’s Eve you can wonderfully decorate your apartment by placing the figures in the corners, under the tree, on bookshelves, etc.
Useful tips
- adaptation to the Mediterranean climate - leisurely summer walks along the sunny coast;
- apply protective creams against sun rays;
- beware of marine life;
- Don't forget about high waves, rocky bottom and very dangerous rip currents.
You can read more about the phenomenon of rip current on the Wikipedia pages https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rip_current
A short video on what to do if you get caught in a rip current in the Mediterranean Sea
DIY technology
For work, in addition to pebbles, paint and brushes for them, superglue, various materials for decoration (whatever you can find) - scraps of fabric and fur, beads, threads or yarn, small feathers. Accessories in the shape of the “eyes” of characters are sold in sewing supply stores, but you can also replace them with colored beads or cute flat small buttons.
Pebbles must be thoroughly washed and dried before work. Glue eyes onto the “face” stones, you can draw noses or glue large beads or wool balls instead. Smiling mouths are painted with paints or “laid out” from bright woolen threads. You can also draw them on colored paper, cut them out and glue them. After this, make hair and beards for the gnomes from fur, thread, feathers or fluff - whatever is at hand.
The bodies of the gnomes, like the caps, can be easily made from colored scraps, sewing them in the shape of a cone and filling them with something like cotton wool or scraps of padding polyester. Using strong glue, the heads are attached to the bodies - the funny figures are ready!
How to decorate a refrigerator
Every family with children has refrigerator magnets. But we will have unusual ones - made of pebbles! Let's make magnets in the shape of monsters. Flat pebbles, washed and dried, are painted on both sides in bright colors. After drying, we draw creepy mouths with bared teeth for the “monsters” and glue on the eyes.
We attach a magnet to the back of each stone with superglue. If the stones are large and heavy enough, use a pair of magnets. The original decoration for the refrigerator is ready!
It is best to make bright fish from oval-shaped pebbles, as well as birds with unusual plumage. You can also make a mouse. In addition to pebbles and superglue, prepare scissors, paper and colored scraps. Ears and a tail for the future mouse are cut out of fabric and glued in the right places onto an oblong gray stone. Smaller pebbles will serve as paws, and bundles of threads will serve as antennae. Glue on the eyes (you can use them in pairs in the form of paper circles - wider white ones at the bottom, smaller black ones on top). So the cute mouse is ready.
If you prefer a bird, then take a rounder pebble and make a beak from a fabric of a suitable color (fold the piece into a triangle with a sharp end, glue the wide side to the pebble head). Mark the eyes in the right place, take care of the plumage. Ready!
creative aquarium
It is best to make fish from small oblong stones. Having made several pieces of different sizes, types and colors, you can organize an original decorative “aquarium” from a suitable box, adding large “boulders” and “sea grass” from threads or colored paper to the composition.
Another option is to “launch” our “fish” into a real aquarium with water as decorative elements (you will need to take care of indelible paint and reliable materials for decoration).
So, let's make fish. As usual, wash and dry the stones. Using a simple pencil, mark the contours of the fins, head, and tail on each of them. We paint the fish in different colors, cut out the tails and fins and craft them separately, then glue them to the bodies.
Any material is suitable for this - colored paper, strips of fabric, shiny foil, even feathers of a suitable shape. We also glue the eyes in the right places (we take ready-made decorative elements or just shiny convex beads).

Additional ideas
If the fish are supposed to be “launched” into the aquatic environment, then the tail and fins can be cut from transparent plastic from unnecessary plastic bottles of different colors. This material is truly universal. It is possible to obtain a variety of decorative elements from it; it is easily cut, processed and takes the desired shape.
For example, thin, long and slightly curled strips will make a great tail for our “goldfish” (especially if you take a brown or yellow bottle). Small scraps of plastic will produce hard, sharp “fins” that can be glued to the backs of the fish.
A decorative aquarium can be filled with real plants in small pots, which are masked with the same sea pebbles. And if, in addition, you organize special lighting for it and carefully think through the composition, such an aquarium will decorate any room - a living room, hallway or children's corner.
Properties
The properties of the gem themselves depend on the purity of the stone, and if it is not uniform, on its contents. The color red has always been considered a very strong energy, and its owner has strength, confidence and passion. Gemstones with red color, in addition to magical ones, have many other advantages. Gems are also minerals and can affect the body:
- improve the functioning of internal organs if you massage with a stone;
- improves blood circulation and blood pressure;
- fills the owner with strength and ideas;
- gives a lot of energy;
- improves the metabolic process;
- helps train memory;
- stimulates brain activity;
- gives a desire to work.
In the old days, topaz gained fame as a gem that was called the “stone of revelation.” Its magical properties are amazing: magicians, psychics, and wizards carry it with them to concentrate their powers.
It is important to note that only natural stones, not fakes, have the ability to transmit energy.
The color red is inseparably associated with love, and all stones are considered the patrons of lovers and married people. They have a positive effect on the couple: they attract the attention of the opposite sex, restore former passion, protect against betrayal and preserve the family hearth.
