The medallion, which came to us from Ancient Rome, was originally used as a reward for triumphant military leaders. Similar to a large gold coin, it was an ornate disc.
And as a piece of jewelry, the medallion (locket) has been known since the Renaissance, which aroused interest in antiquity. There is no exact information about the origin of the decoration. Recorded facts of wearing medallions in England date back to the 17th century. The peak of popularity of the unusual pendant can be considered the 18th-19th centuries - the time of the Victorian era (or the period of romanticism and neo-styles), when medallions, among other things, began to be used as a “storage place” for the memory of relatives and loved ones who died in wars.
The name of the decoration “medallion” literally means “big medal”. It came into modern Russian from French, with its roots in Latin and ancient Greek.
What is a pendant
Translated from French, coulant means either “necklace” or “flowing”. Therefore, a pendant is a streamlined neck decoration that is worn loosely on a chain or cord. A gold or silver chain goes beautifully with items made of precious or semi-precious stones, both gracefully cut and without it. For example, a drop-shaped sapphire surrounded by small diamonds that repeat its shape, or a rectangular faceted emerald in a gold frame. Natural drop-shaped pearls of white, pink or black colors harmoniously combine with silver.

Leather or suede laces correspond to the ethnic style, so in this case any ornamental stones can be used as a pendant: jet, agate, malachite, etc. Folk style allows the use of stones of arbitrary shape without any processing that gives symmetry.
The pendant looks beautiful in the form of a cabochon (usually made on the basis of semi-precious stones). This cutting method allows you to create a uniform convex surface (on one or both sides) without edges. Tiger or cat's eye with characteristic veins, deep black jet, transparent amber with splashes of amber look most organic in this form.
What is the difference between a pendant and a pendant or are they similar concepts? It should be noted that the pendant can be positioned as a type of pendant. The issue of similarities and differences between these concepts is discussed in more detail in the last block of the article.
Stage one: cut and paste the photo
At this stage of work you need to do the following:
Detailed instructions for hand washing, rinsing and drying large blankets + tips
Why did Yulia Vysotskaya ask Anatoly Kot to marry her if she didn’t love her?
Astronomers have found the reason why aurora appears on Jupiter
- turn the image upside down and attach the medallion to it;
- trace the outline of the medallion with a pencil;
- crop the image along the marking line.
Or you can create a stencil, as shown in the illustrations.
The cropped photograph, of course, needs to be glued to one of the flat blanks of the medallion. The glue takes time to dry completely.
It is more advisable to use universal quick-drying glue - it sets instantly, and work can be continued in a couple of minutes.
What is a pendant
The concept itself implies that this is a product that is suspended from something. Etymologically, pendant is akin to the word “keychain”. A jewelry pendant can be used in the singular or plural, as an addition to a chain around the neck, to a bracelet (on an arm or leg), or to a watch.
A pendant is a decoration of any shape, most often small. It can be made of metal, ornamental stone, glass, crystal, with elements of filigree, enamel, etc. Depending on the image created, it can have a noble, refined character (the famous diamond pendants of Queen Anne from the novel “The Three Musketeers” by Alexandre Dumas or gold with pearls made by the Spanish Queen Isabella of Valois). Or serve as an original addition to the national costume (animal figurines, bird feathers, “dream catchers” used by the indigenous people of America and India).
Among young people, pendants are used as an element of subculture. For example, a Pandora bracelet with numerous thematic pendants, or for the hippie trend - the peace sign, symbolizing world peace, etc. Most often, pendants have a single thematic thread and are components of a set consisting of a necklace, earrings, and bracelets.
Jewelry with folklore flavor can combine pendants made from different materials. For example, beads, wood, ivory, etc.
Types of medallions
Each pendant is unique, since even two identical accessories can contain two completely different secrets.
The medallion itself is usually worn around the neck on a chain, cord or ribbon. Most often it has a round or oval shape . There are also heart-shaped decorations.
These pendants are made from base metals, but jewelry medallions made from gold or silver and set with precious stones .
There are several types of special pendants that differ from the classic form:
- Pairs . Such pendants together form a special figure, most often a heart.
- Floating . Under the top part of the decoration, made of glass, small pendants are placed that “float” when moving.
- Openwork . The upper part is made openwork. It is problematic to hide anything in it, but this does not diminish the charm of the product.
Special medallions for solid perfumes have also become equally popular.
Features of the medallion
The origin of this word is related to the French médailion (large medal). A medallion is a predominantly round-shaped product that is associated with some kind of merit or insignia (not to be confused with awards and medals). For example, a medallion-token of a military regiment or a family item of imperial persons: with a coat of arms, motto, etc.
Another type of jewelry is medallions with portraits of dear or close people. In the era of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin they were quite popular. Enamel portraits or embossed profiles of loved ones, children, parents, served not only as a tribute to specific individuals, but also connected loved ones with an invisible energetic thread.
The decorations were open and closed, that is, in the form of a miniature oval or round box, which was suspended on a neck chain. Later, with the invention of photography, instead of artistic portraits, miniature photographs began to be inserted into the medallion.

In addition to photographs, a lock of hair, part of a dried flower, etc. were placed in closed medallions. These items were especially dear and memorable to their owner and could be passed on from generation to generation.
Another direction in the theme of decoration are medallions with religious symbols, zodiac signs, medallions-talismans and amulets. It is believed that in difficult life situations they will help to find the right way out or maintain composure.

The main differences between neck jewelry
Despite the fact that all the presented jewelry is somewhat similar, each of them has its own personality and is different from the rest.
- The difference between a pendant and a pendant is that the latter is worn on any jewelry (chains, bracelets, brooches, earrings, etc.), while a pendant is a single piece of jewelry that is worn only on a neck chain.
- The number of pendants on one product (chain, bracelet, etc.) may be different, and the medallion and pendant are used only in a single version.
- The medallion differs from the pendant in that it has an oval, rounded shape. The pendant can be trapezoidal, spherical, rectangular or any other shape. It depends on the size and material of the product.
- The difference between a medallion and other jewelry lies in its semantic meaning. It may include a miniature portrait, a lock of hair, or serve as a talisman or amulet.
- A pendant is a lady's neck ornament; pendants and medallions can be worn by both sexes. Most often, men prefer larger products.
Regardless of what jewelry is used to create the look, it is important that it is in harmony with other jewelry, as well as wardrobe items and accessories (shoes, bag, belt). Choose jewelry in a good mood, then they will delight and serve faithfully for many years.

New of the week: pendant with a photo
The new product of the week is the most interesting of the devices that we have been able to try over the past 7 days. This time, Moscow craftsmen have made a high-tech secret pendant with a photograph - it is embossed on the lens in the form of an engraving. To see the image, you need to shine a flashlight from your smartphone on the pendant, and the image will be projected onto some surface. Even in her early childhood, Muscovite Svetlana Radikova kept a portrait of her mother in a decoration on her lock. Now she herself is the mother of 10-year-old Vera. We sent the photo of the girl to production and received a pendant, which Svetlana will test. Including at your—how to put it—workplace.
Svetlana is a professional wrestler. In the ring she is the Viper. She has to perform in mud and foam. How will you react to this decoration? According to the manufacturer, the pendant is based on optical glass; it seems to be resistant to both moisture and acids found in sweat.
The pendant passed the foam test, but will the lens become cloudy if you do this to it regularly? We decided to check this with a test that simulates a long process. Apply a solution of acetic acid to the surface of the lens and leave it for a day. After 24 hours, we record the result - the lens is clean and projects an image without defects. Let's show another pendant to an expert from the Research Institute of Optical and Physical Measurements. According to his conclusion, the engraving was indeed applied with a laser, but the lens, contrary to the manufacturer’s statements, is not made of glass.
Acrylic is lighter than glass, it is almost impossible to break, it is resistant to moisture, but it is easier to scratch. Therefore, it is better for Svetlana to clean her pendant after the competition without a brush. Otherwise, the lens showed itself and the image of my daughter well both in the dark and in daylight. And, as Svetlana says, this pendant has a clear advantage over the heart on the lock from childhood.
For an interesting idea and good implementation, we would give 5, but for acrylic instead of the declared optical glass, we will still deduct one point. Our rating is 4 stars out of 5. The exact name and detailed characteristics, as always, are on the website www.chudo.tech.
