History and origin
Uvarovite is a rare variety of the garnet mineral. The discovery of the gem occurred in 1832. Deposits of emerald nuggets are located on the territory of the Saranovskoye deposit, a place where many Ural gems are mined. In the same year, chemist Hermann Hess introduced the uvarovite stone into mineralogy with a detailed description and classification. The mineral was named after the godson of Empress Catherine, Count Sergei Uvarov.
Catherine herself appreciated the extraordinary beauty of the Ural emerald. And Count Uvarov, being the president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, played an important role in the extraction and study of the properties of uvarovite.
A distinctive feature of the mineral are small crystals, 2-3 mm in size, forming fine-grained brushes. Later, deposits of the nugget were discovered on other continents of the planet, but the gem rightfully bears the name “Ural emerald”, after the place of its first discovery.

Uvarovite and other chromium-rich garnets are quite often observed as well-formed crystals in association with chrome spinels and chrome chlorites in voids (mainly in alpine-type mineralized fractures) among deposits of chromium iron ores and ultramafic igneous rocks (Saranovskoe deposit in the Urals and Outokumpu in Finland). In the Urals, in the Nizhne Tagil dunite massif, uvarovite is found in association with chromite, chromium chlorites, chrome diopside, chromactinolite, fuchsite, chrome vesuvianite, cubanite, and pentlandite. The deposition of part of the uvarovite was in the nature of replacement of chromite. Thin inclusions of uvarovite were found in native platinum from Nizhny Tagil (during its dissolution). In the Saranovskoe deposit, uvarovite fills cracks and forms druses of crystals on dense chromite (according to Vertushkov, it was formed in dry cracks of the Alpine type). In the Teplye Klyuchi deposit, uvarovite is associated with kemmererite, rutile, chromium perovskite, chromium micas, tourmaline, tremolite, chromamesite, fuchsite, and rhodochrome. It was observed in Bisersk in the form of irregular aggregates in dark gray quartzite together with pyrrhotite and in pyrrhotite ores with diopside. In the chromite layer of the norite intrusion of the Bushveld complex (Transvaal, South Africa), uvarovite is observed at the contact with surrounding rocks in the form of secant veins and lenses; accompanied by chromite, pyroxene, diopside, and zoisite. Together with tremolite, diopside and magnetite, uvarovite was found among chromites in the Red Lodge district (USA). In association with kemmeririte, it was noted among the chromites of Kalrangi, pc. Orissa (India). In the diopside skarns of Sisma (Outokumpu, Finland), uvarovite and chromite form zonal aggregates, in the central and outer parts of which chromite is located; the intermediate zone is composed of uvarovite; Along with uvarovite, picotite, quartz, and tremolite are found.

Uvarovite, like all garnets, is a quartz silicate. The emerald color is achieved due to the high chromium content. Iron impurities make the stones dark. Some specimens contain titanium, which gives the stone a yellowish appearance or inclusions that look like rusty streaks.
