The proud and capricious stone Chrysoprase - an incredible story, photo of the mineral, distinguishing a fake, stone in astrology

The name of the stone chrysoprase is of Greek origin and is translated as “golden bow”. The history of this semi-precious mineral dates back to the time of Alexander the Great, who wore chrysoprase on his belt as a talisman. Legend has it that literally the day before his death, the king dropped a stone into the river and did not notice.

Frederick II, the Prussian king, had no less love for the green mineral, seeing in his chrysoprase ring an additional source of strength and wisdom. His crown, inlaid with this ornamental stone, has also been preserved.

Chrysoprase was used not only in jewelry, but also in decorative and applied arts. Quite often this type of chalcedony was used as an element of decoration of premises, both residential and sacred.

The peak of fashion for chrysoprase came in the 18th century. In many countries of Western Europe, large quantities of buildings have been preserved in which there are mosaics, one of the forming elements of which is this stone.

Description, types and jewelry quality

Chrysoprase is a green chalcedony that is translucent or translucent. Ornamental or precious stone of the third row. The color comes from microscopic nickel inclusions.

The mineral is classified into grades according to color characteristics:

  • the highest grade is emerald green, uniformly uniformly colored with a bright, intense color, the degree of translucency is up to 5 cm, when cut it resembles an emerald;
  • the first - uniformly uniformly colored specimens of green apple color (translucency up to 2 cm);
  • the second is a weakly colored spotted green stone with a slight blue or yellowish tint, the structure is heterogeneous - alternating opaque whitish and translucent segments.

The distribution by grade determines the material of the frame and the cost of the jewelry.

Style universalism

There are a huge number of options for wearing this variety of chalcedony. Looking at photos of chrysoprase in various settings and combinations with other precious stones, you are simply amazed at how cool and organic it looks in silver and gold, in the company of warm and cold gems, as well as monochrome tones.

Of course, it was previously believed that the combination of green and red, including in relation to jewelry, was bad manners. However, the current perception of style is fundamentally different from what it was even 20 years ago, not to mention older times. Nowadays you won’t surprise anyone with a riot of colors in jewelry and clothes. Chrysoprase is appropriate in any image: classic, romantic, preppy. This stone refreshes a conservative image, adds a little pepper to the delicate look, and adds a mysterious maturity to the look of the eternal schoolgirl.

Jewelry with chrysoprase in history

Chrysoprase is a gem with a rich historical trail.

  1. In the ancient world, wealthy Romans and Greeks sported jewelry with pebbles framed with lapis lazuli and diamonds. Cameos and intaglios of mythological themes were carved on the stone, with silhouettes of emperors and heroes.
  2. The alchemist and warlock Albertus Magnus claims that Alexander the Great always won because he wore a belt with a gem to battle. Returning from the Indian campaign, the commander wished to swim in the Euphrates. The snake bit off a stone from the belt left on the shore and threw it into the water. The world conqueror soon fell ill and died.
  3. Chrysoprase and the legend about it were introduced to Europe by the Crusaders - it was believed that the Holy Grail was carved from it. They began to decorate chalices with gemstones. Ornamental stone was no less in demand in social life. The Sanssouci Palace (Potsdam, Germany) is proud of its tables, the chrysoprase tops of which are made using the Florentine mosaic technique. Chrysoprase mosaic decorates the Chapel of St. Wenceslas (Prague).
  4. The stone had a crowned patron, who made it fashionable among the nobility. The Prussian king Frederick II constantly wore a ring with large chrysoprase and ordered it to decorate his crown. The monarch did not like the cabochon, so the court jewelers invented a new type. The “Friederican” cut is a flat table framed by small facets.
  5. Since the 18th century, the gem has been used as a decorative gem. In Austria-Hungary, Germany, and other Catholic countries, cups, chalices, monstrances, and other cathedral utensils were inlaid with it.

Today, jewelry with chrysoprase is again in demand.

History of the mineral

It is believed that chrysoprase owes its fame to Alexander the Great. According to legend, he wore this stone as a talisman.

Teachers still tell schoolchildren legends about the magic stone that protected the legendary commander from death. They say that the day before his death he lost his amulet while swimming in the lake. In one version this happened by accident, in another it is said that a snake stole it.

If you translate the name of the mineral from Greek, you get “gold” and “leek”.

The strong belief in the magical properties of chrysoprase made it popular. True, only among people who lived in abundance. The rich were happy to purchase such a talisman, hoping that it would protect against failure. Jewelry was made from chrysoprase - rings, earrings, pendants with images of heroes of myths and legends popular in those days.

Why chrysoprase was called “leek” immediately becomes clear - the shade of the gem really resembles the color of the leaves of this plant.

Alexander the Great is not the only famous person to wear chrysoprase. Frederick the Great also had such a talisman. The ruler contributed to the return of fashion for green stone. The nobility, repeating after the king, also began to wear jewelry made from this mineral.

Jewelry stone

Chrysoprase is considered a semi-precious mineral. The best samples are large emerald green ones, up to 450 grams.

Cut

The gem is easily polished, but a mirror finish is achievable as an exception. Therefore, the classic form of chrysoprase inserts is a cabochon. It reveals the beauty and color characteristics of the stone. The craftsmen try to make it as high as possible.

The second option is “Frederician”. This is a flat insert with miniature facets around the perimeter.

Frame

The framing of the stones is selected depending on their type. Premium-class specimens come in 585-carat gold or platinum; the first grade is awarded silver of the highest standard for jewelry. Second-rate pale or spotted specimens are encased in costume jewelry or jewelry alloy. Often there is no frame (in beads or bracelets).

Compatibility with other gems

Transparent emerald chrysoprase is combined in jewelry with diamonds, diamonds, spinel, ruby, pink or blue sapphire. For simpler stones, choose cubic zirconia, marcasite, cacholong, cultured freshwater pearls, pressed turquoise, synthetic amethyst, topaz, and citrine.

In large items such as a necklace or bracelet, chrysoprase is complemented with cultured freshwater pearls, agates, turquoise, wood, and jewelry glass. The variety of colors makes them universal, practical, and the presence of semi-precious and synthetic components makes them affordable.

The duet of green stone with transparent black minerals is aesthetically impeccable.

Criteria for selecting chrysoprase products

The jewelry market offers chrysoprase jewelry for every taste and budget.

Range

Designers create a full range of jewelry. They use natural or artificial chrysoprase.

The origin of the insert is indicated on the product tag. The imitation is most often a composite composition made of colored fiber optic glass under the “ketsize” brand.

Chrysoprase jewelry set

An outwardly modest stone is made richer by a decorative or massive frame. The monotonous color scheme is diluted with gems of other shades or white transparent stones.

Cut

The choice of shape is determined by the physical properties of the stone. It is easy to polish, but it is difficult to achieve a shine comparable to top-tier stones. Two types of gem cuts are considered traditional:

  • cabochon: the higher the dome, the more pronounced the advantages of the stone;
  • Friderician: flat top, graceful mini-facets around the perimeter.

The second type is complex, used for products with top-level natural stone.

Frame

In the factory version, the framing of gems is determined by the quality of the mineral: gold 750° or 585°, silver 925°, cupronickel, jewelry alloy.

Properties of the stone:

  • formula – SiO2;
  • hardness - 6.5-7 points;
  • luster - glassy;
  • Green colour;
  • density – 2.6 g/cm³.

Chrysoprase is also called the “apple” gem. After all, apple is one of its shades. There are others: grassy, green-blue, emerald, yellowish-green.

Caring for chrysoprase products

To make jewelry happy, proper storage and care is necessary:

  • even emerald chrysoprase fades when heated or exposed to the sun for a long time. It is resuscitated by placing it in a damp environment (for example, by wrapping it in a wet cloth for a couple of hours). It is better not to overuse walks in the sun or going to the beach;
  • The stone does not tolerate aggressive detergents, cosmetics, or sweat. Jewelry is put on last, after applying makeup. Take pictures while cooking or doing other household chores;
  • prone to mechanical damage, so it should be protected from falls or impacts;
  • wash with soapy water and a soft cloth;
  • Products in silver, gold or other metal are cleaned with cotton swabs so that the substance does not get from the frame onto the gem.

Chrysoprase is a peace-loving “sociable” gem; jewelry with it likes to be in plain sight, rather than locked away in a box.

Health Importance

Since ancient times, green has been considered the color of healers. People belonging to this caste did not always wear green clothes, but often used green-colored minerals. Perhaps this influenced the emergence of such associations.

An amulet made from a green gem will help overcome insomnia.

However, even modern experts confirm that green has a positive effect on the psyche. In ancient times, they also believed that green stones could heal.

Medicinal properties of chrysoprase:

  • restores vision (to achieve positive results, you need to meditate while looking at the mineral);

  • treats respiratory diseases (decoration in pendant format helps with this).

Having seen such a useful talisman, you can lose your head and start wearing it constantly. But lithotherapists do not advise doing this. There is an opinion that when worn for a long time, chrysoprase causes gallbladder dysfunction. To avoid trouble, remove it at night.

Magical properties of jewelry

The Apostle John speaks of chrysoprase as the tenth stone in the foundation of the New Jerusalem. Jewelry with such a gem is not just jewelry, its significance is recognized in various fields. Any chrysoprase jewelry can serve as a talisman; rings or rings are especially strong:

In esotericism and astrology

The most important magical function of chrysoprase is considered to be the stone’s ability to win over Lady Fortune to its owner, attract positivity and protect from the envy of enemies, the evil eye, damage, hypocrisy and lies. Chrysoprase also attracts success in the material sphere, therefore talismans and jewelry made from it are suitable for people involved in trade and business.

A talisman made from a green mineral will help you understand your own emotions, decide on a behavior strategy in relation to an issue that worries a person, improve your personal life: find love or survive a breakup with minimal losses.

Figurines or dishes made of chrysoprase will protect the house from negative influences from the outside. There is a belief that if the stone is in the hands of a malicious, wicked person, it will darken in the blink of an eye, indicating to its owner the impending danger.

In ancient times, chrysoprase was used to charge water; in the Middle Ages, it was believed that the stone helped cope with evil spirits. There was also a belief that if a person sentenced to death put a piece of the mineral in his mouth before execution, he would be able to escape. But, of course, this is not confirmed information by anyone.

In general, the magic of chrysoprase is multifaceted, but in order to feel it, you need to wear the amulet in such a way that it is inaccessible to the eyes of others.

As for who is suitable for chrysoprase according to the horoscope, astrologers agree that it is well compatible with all Zodiacs, except, perhaps, Aries - they become overly active and at the same time, as is their custom, stubborn. Such an initiative may be punishable. Chrysoprase combines ideally with the energy of Aquarius. Representatives of this sign with a talisman made of a green mineral seem to acquire wings behind their backs.

Varieties and colors

This gem is classified according to color. It is valued for its depth, translucency, and the play of shades that mesmerizes with its beauty. Most specimens are characterized by pure and rich tones. As a rule, the color of the stone resembles an unripe apple, so the epithet “apple” is used when describing it. It acquires this shade due to the content of nickel ions.

In nature, emerald, bluish, turquoise and mint samples are found. There are also minerals of dark shades, which is determined by the nickel compound. Regardless of whether the stone is dark or light, there is always a blue undertone in its color. The intensity of the color of chrysoprase is determined by the concentration of water-nickel inclusions.

Instances of rich color have good translucency and excellent cutting, making them almost impossible to distinguish from emerald. Samples with uneven color also have advantages. Such stones have an incomparable natural pattern. Each piece of jewelry inlaid with such a mineral is exclusive.

A transparent gem of a pure apple shade with a uniform structure is considered very rare. Such rare specimens have a high value among collectors and jewelers. In most cases, stones are mined that contain admixtures of opal, talc and serpentine. This significantly reduces the decorative value of the mineral, since the gem loses its color saturation and transparency. Such specimens are never used for inlaying expensive jewelry.

Colors and types

Chrysoprase attracts with its depth, translucency, and subtle tints of shades.

In most cases, the color of the mineral resembles an unripe apple; it also has emerald, bluish, turquoise and mint shades. Also, there are specimens with dark tones that indicate nickel compounds.

Chrysoprase bracelet of different colors

It is customary to divide chrysoprase into 3 main types according to color:

  1. Emerald: this type is the most valuable, characterized by high transparency and depth of shade.
  2. Apple green: this stone is less translucent and may have opaque inclusions.
  3. Heterogeneous, spotted: specimens are ornamental and have less value.

Emerald

Contraindications

The energy specificity of the green gem imposes a number of restrictions on the use of jewelry with it:

  1. They are not needed by timid, weak-willed, indecisive people - the pebble will strengthen these character traits, aggravating the problems.
  2. Not recommended for children or teenagers - the strong energy of the stone will affect an unformed worldview and a fragile psyche.
  3. The stone does not “cooperate” with unbalanced, deceitful, self-centered people.

There are conditions for compatibility with minerals:

  1. Energetically negative for chrysoprase in jewelry are agate, hematite, red garnet, onyx, sardonyx, jasper.
  2. A ring or ring with chrysoprase tolerates the proximity only of products without stone inserts.

It doesn’t matter on which hand to wear the ring or bracelet so that the magical properties are fully manifested. You can alternate on both hands or as convenient.

Optimistic colors and affordability make chrysoprase popular in the jewelry market. This is an option for those who love jewelry with natural stones, but are limited in funds. The stone is easy to care for. A set with apple-green inserts will enliven the strict range of a business wardrobe, at the same time lifting the mood of the hostess.

What do lithotherapists talk about?

Lithotherapists highly value the healing properties of chrysoprase, among which are the following:

  • Help with minor vision defects. The transparent pebble can be used as an ophthalmic trainer;
  • Getting rid of insomnia. Stone treatment experts advise placing a stone at the head of the bed for this purpose;
  • Help in the fight against depression and anxiety;
  • Elimination of cold symptoms;
  • Mitigating reactions to weather changes and geomagnetic fluctuations.

The therapeutic effect of chrysoprase is also manifested in stabilizing heart rate and improving blood circulation in the pelvic organs, which affects the quality of intimate life and fertility. The gem stimulates metabolism, including the brain, which is very useful during high mental stress, as well as the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases (while they are still correctable), and helps to recover faster after operations.

However, healers do not recommend wearing products made from this stone on an ongoing basis due to the fact that this can negatively affect the functioning of the gallbladder, which, as a consequence, will affect the health of the entire body.

Applications and products

All women's and men's jewelry is made from green agate: rings, earrings, pendants, brooches, beads. Many girls are interested in which finger they should wear rings with these stones on. This will depend on your zodiac sign, as well as what role you have chosen to decorate. If you want to have a talisman, then the woman puts the ring on the index finger, and the man on the little finger.

You can carry the stone without a frame in your pocket as a talisman or amulet. Minerals with a large number of impurities are used to decorate the interior and for the manufacture of household items.

Chrysoprase jewelry can be worn with both casual wear and festive outfits.

Usually, craftsmen polish and cut semi-precious stones into cabochon shapes.

Chrysoprase of the highest quality

Most of all, jewelers value transparent emerald-colored chrysoprase, which are often confused with emeralds. The color of jewelry-quality chrysoprase is bright and uniform, there are no inclusions in the stone that are visible to the naked eye, and the transparency is high. A plate or piece of rock is translucent to a thickness of up to 5 centimeters. In nature, such specimens are found in small quantities.

Chrysoprase first grade

The shade of the stones is less intense and closer to apple green, the transparency is lower, the stones are translucent to a depth of 2 centimeters and may include opaque areas. First grade chrysoprase is found in jewelry, beautiful vintage snuff boxes and caskets by famous craftsmen.

Chrysoprase second grade

Ornamental chrysoprase can be completely opaque, or it can be slightly translucent with opaque areas and inclusions of manganese, clay particles, and iron oxides. Color can vary from bluish-green to yellow-green, with milky white spots acceptable. In some cases, dendrites are formed.

Who is it suitable for?

From an astrological point of view, chrysoprase is a talisman stone for Aquarius, Pisces, and Capricorn. Under the influence of this mineral, the listed zodiac signs will be able to become more courageous, reasonable and attractive to others. Taurus, Gemini and Cancer will also find a reliable amulet, giving preference to chrysoprase. But the energy of this gem will only harm Aries and Leos, since under the influence of the stone, representatives of the element of Fire will become apathetic and passive, which is contrary to their nature. The same can be said about Scorpios, because chrysoprase enhances the manifestation of the negative qualities of their character.

Who will benefit from the stone?

Stephen Webster ring with chrysoprase
Chrysoprase is a talisman of inquisitive minds and inventors, people striving for tireless growth and development, ready to change themselves and the world around them. The stone will bring them success in all endeavors.

It is advisable for those who work with money, especially large sums, to have this gem with them.

Price and favorable time to buy

Crystal prices depend on the cut.

Gem beads can be purchased for 2000 rubles.

Cost of stone in silver:

  • pendant with chain - from RUB 3,500;
  • ring - from 2000-4000 rubles;
  • earrings - from 2000 rub.

Gold items will cost more: ring - from 6,000 rubles, earrings - from 11,000 rubles.

To purchase chrysoprase jewelry, you must wait until the 28th lunar day. Time of year: late spring or early autumn.

It is necessary to select a stone in bright light in order to evaluate the shade, purity and distinguish it from fake. Do not wear the gem on the day of purchase. The uncut stone is carried in a bag.

Artificial chrysoprase

It began to be counterfeited with the development of fiber optic technologies. Green light-conducting fibers are compressed and connected to the matrix. The eye perceives this as a luminous green haze, which is similar to chrysoprase. It is impossible to see the fibers even at thirty times magnification with a jewelry loupe, since they are incredibly thin. A bead with a diameter of one centimeter contains up to 6 kilometers of fiber.

Externally, artificial stone does not differ from natural stone.

Care and storage

It is believed that chrysoprase belongs to the category of gems that constantly need to be demonstrated to others. The more often you wear it, the more power it will have. If you do not wear this gem for a long time, it quickly loses all its healing and magical properties.

The stone must be worn constantly

As a healing talisman, give preference to products in which chrysoprase is framed in silver. Metal will only enhance the effect of the gem. The advantage of the talisman in question is that it can be combined with all styles of clothing, but you should not wear it with a tracksuit.

The stone does not require special care. Like all other gems, chrysoprase should be washed regularly under warm running water and soap. You need to clean the talisman with a soft cloth so as not to scratch it.

Try to store the gem in a place where it will not come into contact with hard objects or chemicals. The sun's rays also have a detrimental effect on it. Do not store the mineral in places with high temperatures, otherwise it may overheat.

Rules for caring for mineral products

In order for a crystal to serve its owner for a long time, it must be properly cared for. Clean regularly with warm water. It is better to wash chrysoprase jewelry in a soapy solution and do not use household chemicals. Wipe with a soft cloth.

The stone should not be exposed to prolonged sunlight or overheating, otherwise it will lose color.

You should not wear jewelry with this mineral in bright sunshine.

How to spot a fake

Sometimes colored glass or catsite, a Chinese counterfeit, is passed off as a semi-precious stone. A real mineral is never homogeneous. If you look at it through a powerful magnifying glass, you can see inclusions in the form of feathers or bubbles. Glass blende always has a bright, rich color. It is quite easy to determine. But it is difficult for a non-specialist to distinguish a natural crystal from a fake from China. Therefore, you need to purchase jewelry in large jewelry stores. Be sure to ask for a stone quality certificate.

Differences from fake

There are often cases when an unscrupulous jeweler passes off a fake as an original and asks for an impressive amount of money for it. Any other gem that is colored with nickel is a fake. At such moments, every person should know the basic parameters that help distinguish a fake from the original:

  • a natural gem costs a large sum of money. Buying beads will cost you 3-4 thousand rubles. If you are offered to purchase them at a discount and the cost is very low, then there is a high probability that they are offering you a fake. The bracelet will cost you 3 thousand rubles;
  • the original stone is characterized by its small size, so take a closer look: if the gem is larger than 1 sq. see, pass by. This means that they are selling you a fake;
  • Chinese fakes made of quartz are characterized by a rich and uniform shade, and ideal gems are not found in nature;
  • the mineral, which is mined naturally, increases in size every year. Look through a magnifying glass at the product. If there are bubbles or feathers inside, you are buying the original.

If you are worried that you will not be able to distinguish a fake from the original, there are several simple methods to correct this. Make purchases only from certified stores. The license prohibits them from selling non-original products. Shop with someone who is knowledgeable about precious gems.

Fakes and imitations of chrysoprase

Ring with imitation chrysoprase.

In jewelry there are imitations of chrysoprase - beautiful, but not a natural stone. So check when purchasing. Beads made from this stone are quite expensive (the price varies by thousands of rubles), so if you see something inexpensive, it’s an imitation.

This stone is rare and beautiful, and many imitations have appeared, made from less valuable varieties of chalcedony by coloring them with chromium or nickel salts. It is very difficult to distinguish such an imitation from real natural chrysoprase with the naked eye; only a professional can. In general, experts use sophisticated optical analysis methods, a Chelsea filter and a spectroscope for this purpose.

In stores there is jewelry with imitation of chrysoprase (they have it written like that), I asked about other jewelry (where it is not said that it is imitation) - they answered that the stone is natural (in some versions it may be tinted somewhere), a variety of quartz and chalcedony. So if it doesn’t say “imitation,” it’s definitely natural chrysoprase.

Ring with chrysoprase: in such a frame, the ring must be taken “true to size” so that it does not dangle: the ring (that covers the finger) is made a little obliquely for beauty, if it is too big, the stone will look a little crooked. But if it fits tightly on your finger, it’s smooth and very beautiful.
