Creative director of RINGO Nadezhda Yalunina told Private Collection about the history of the company, the creation of exclusive products and entry into international markets

If the life of a company was represented as a timeline, what main points would you mark?

In 1993, the government monopoly on precious metals was lifted and individuals and companies were allowed to deal with them.
It was then that my husband and I—he once ran a jewelry workshop—and a number of specialists from the Sverdlovsk Jewelry Factory decided to organize a small jewelry production. The market was not saturated, and we started with the basics - simple silver crosses. Religious themes were very relevant back then. Silver - because the capital was minimal. Then they expanded and began making silver pendants, wedding rings and other rings. Gradually they switched to gold, also the simplest products, and gradually added cubic zirconia. The next stage was 1996, when at an exhibition in St. Petersburg we met a Yakut company and created a joint venture. They had diamonds, but lacked a production base. And the Urals have always been famous for their craftsmen and jewelry traditions of processing metal and stones. And we began to produce the first products with small diamonds, stones of the first group. At first, the most simple assortment, actually mass market.

Later we looked around and realized that everyone was basically producing the same range. I'm not talking about individual craftsmen, jewelry artists. And the decision came that we should try to somehow stand out in this market. We began to attend major international exhibitions to understand how the jewelry world lives. The first trip was to Basel to exhibition No. 1 - Baselworld. We realized that there is such a thing as a brand, when there is a face of the company and its entire assortment is subordinated to a certain style, to some single principle...

That is, what is called brand DNA today

Yes. And we made our first full-fledged collection “Black and White”. It was the turn of 1999 and 2000, it was dedicated to the millennium and consisted of white gold and diamonds. By the way, I recently reviewed it and I can say that stylistically many of the products are still not at all outdated. The design was done by Ural designers - then only two or three people and a girl from Kostroma worked for us. A full-fledged design studio was organized at the beginning of 2002, when they decided to create the RINGO brand and, in addition to mass products, begin producing collections that are subordinated to a specific idea.

Then our son joined the company, with new marketing teachings, a different perception, vision of the market and business. We were one of the first to launch the brand, and our clients, wholesale buyers, noted the differences in the product and design. We have our own regular customers, fans who still wear RINGO.

The next stage was 2005, when we opened the first branded salon in Yekaterinburg. First of all, so that local buyers know us better. To do this, we set factory prices and gave customers a lifetime warranty on our products.

Then they began to open their own showrooms in other cities and tried to make them not just mono-brand stores, but a kind of clubs for brand followers. A place where you can make a presentation, learn about new collections or just stop by for coffee.

It was probably at this time that you started making exclusive things?

Yes, we began to accept custom orders based on materials or customer designs. And at the same time they themselves began to work with more expensive, exclusive things. And since 2013, we have made our own stands at exhibitions in Hong Kong, Basel, and Dubai. We were received well everywhere: for example, the calling card of the RINGO brand, the Crystal collection, was appreciated. They even began to counterfeit it in Russia.

Do exclusive items have a circulation? Some of them are presented on the brand’s website.

They are either unique or made in an edition of two to five copies. Our jewelers and fashion designers of the highest class deal with them; this is a separate caste. Here only handmade, special materials. For example, the “Birds of Paradise” necklace from the “Russian Princesses” collection, which we showed in Dubai, contains stones with a total weight of about 90 carats. These are Malyshevsky emeralds, sapphires and diamonds, topped by a 35-carat cabochon-cut emerald. Or a ring from the “Crystal” collection, which designer Yegor Dunin made with a unique stone - Gokhran bought it from us for its museum.

Collections are usually created around a specific material or idea. So, the “princesses” were based on emeralds that we bought at auction, all with a non-standard unique design. And for the “Urban” collection, Egor was inspired by modern urbanism - he is an architect at heart, and there are volumetric solutions here.

How is the price for unique products determined? What is the minimum and maximum?

First, there is cost, costs already incurred. This, of course, is the cost of raw materials, which become more expensive every year. Recently, everyone experienced another peak in the growth of gold, when it began to cost $3,000 per ounce, and it was a shock to the entire global community. The second is labor costs. Plus the tax burden.

If an exclusive item is a joint work with the customer, then we pre-calculate the price and agree on it. If the product is made by us independently, not for a specific client, then, of course, the creative component and design are already included here.

In 2014, the Birds of Paradise necklace, for example, cost 12 million rubles. A couple of years later, another unique necklace – “Moon Blossom” – was valued at 30 million rubles.

These are collectibles, right?

Certainly! But if we talk about “birds”, then this is an evening option, you can go out in it. But the “Moon Blossom” collar necklace is more of a catwalk item, even a museum piece. Such works of jewelry are well received and bought here, in the United Arab Emirates, and in Southeast Asia. And what they do with them afterwards is a mystery to me.

By the way, how were your collections received abroad?

Europe received us more coolly, unlike Hong Kong, where we had real partners and even had a joint venture in Shanghai. Europeans have their own traditions. It is believed that only Paris can dictate fashion, or only Italians can set trends in jewelry. On the other hand, the same Italians, when they came to our stand, were sincerely delighted. We didn’t have any long-term relationships there - we exhibited in Basel twice, but you need to stand there for 15 years to be accepted as one of our own.
