The meaning, healing power and magical properties of rhodonite stone

Story. Origin

In the Urals, even before the discovery of deposits of this mineral there, people sometimes found pink pebbles in the nests of eagles.
Therefore, in Rus' this stone bore the proud name - eagle. It was hung over the cradle so that the baby would grow up strong and vigilant, like an eagle. The Byzantines were also familiar with rhodonite. They made jewelry with it, but the stone did not gain popularity, since its deposits were few.

"Rhodonite" is translated from Greek as "rose". This name was given to the stone in 1819 by the German mineralogist Christoph Jasche, describing an unknown mineral discovered in his homeland.

In Russia, the discovery of rhodonite was documented in 1792 . Until the beginning of the 20th century, high-quality stones were mined only in the vicinity of Yekaterinburg. They were used to make decorations, turn candlesticks, table tops, vessels and other objects.

In addition to the scientific name, the stone has others:

  • dawn stone;
  • eagle;
  • pink stone;
  • ruby spar;
  • pink spar.

The origin of this mineral is sedimentary. It is formed as a result of transformations of carbonate structures in the presence of accumulations of manganese.

Mining and stone processing

The largest deposit in Russia is located in the Urals, near Yekaterinburg. The stone was first discovered here in 1792. American deposits are located in the states of California and Montana. There is a large rhodonite deposit in Australia.

Until the 20th century, the Ural deposit was the only one. It supplied the whole country with rhodonite, but the volume of production was small. Production increased when Emperor Alexander III saw a rhodonite vase made by Ural craftsmen. The Emperor ordered the largest and most beautiful pieces of rock to be delivered to St. Petersburg. Vases, boxes, cups were made from stone, and the rooms of the palace were decorated with it.

The mineral is easy to process, but it is quite fragile. Most stones are cut into cabochon shapes.

Only clear ruby crystals are diamond cut. Decorative items are carefully polished to give them shine.

Physicochemical characteristics

Rhodonite, from the point of view of chemists, is a manganese silicate.

  • Chemical formula - ( Mn2+, Fe2+, Mn, Ca) SiO3 .
  • Impurity - Al .
  • Color - pink, red, yellow, brown-red, black.
  • The shine is glassy.
  • Transparency - transparent, translucent, opaque.
  • Hardness - 5–5,5.
  • Density - 3.5–3.75 g / cm3 .

Opaque specimens are usually pink in color and are well processed. Transparent ones are bright red and are difficult to cut.

The mineral is fragile, but can be processed well. In nature, it appears as dense, fine-grained agglomerates.

Place of Birth

Rhodonite deposits are found on all continents (except Antarctica):

  • Eurasia - Spain, Sweden, Great Britain, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, China, India, Japan, Indonesia;
  • Africa - Tanzania, Madagascar;
  • South America - Brazil;
  • North America;
  • Australia.

The main suppliers of rhodonite to the world market are Australia and Madagascar. High-quality raw materials are mined in Central Asia.

In Russia, the mineral is mined in Buryatia, Transbaikalia, Yakutia, Karachay-Cherkessia, Primorye, Khabarovsk and Krasnoyarsk territories. The most numerous rhodonite mines are in the Urals, where large agglomerates are found.

The Ural monolith has become the largest in the world. Its weight was 47 tons .

Varieties

Rhodonite has the following varieties:

  • Ruby homogeneous. The mineral is deep red in color, without inclusions. This is the most expensive variety; such a stone is set in gold.
  • Homogeneous pink spar. The color is soft pink.
  • Translucent. Rare, expensive stone. The frame is made of gold, and in jewelry it is combined with sapphire, ruby, and diamonds.
  • Fowlerite. Specimens with yellow-brownish inclusions (due to zinc impurities).
  • Bustamit. The shade is gray-pink, the tree-like pattern is dark or black.
  • Dendrite. Resembles bustamite, but the background is pink and the moss or twig-like designs are red or black.
  • Spotted. On the surface the segments are brownish, gray, ocher, the color of a tea rose or ripe raspberry. This variety is the cheapest.
  • Cobalt. Lilac-violet stone. It is mined in the Urals.
  • Tape. With bright pink, gray, brown, brown, black splashes.
  • Mourning. The black color palette dominates.

The main color of rhodonite is pink. Carmine-scarlet specimens are the most valuable.

Stone compatibility

Orlets can be easily combined with other gems, as it interacts with several elements at the same time. To get a certain effect, it is recommended to wear it together with:

  • sapphire or ruby for public people;
  • tiger's eye for creative individuals;
  • jade to attract material wealth;
  • turquoise to avoid conflicts;
  • carnelian to attract love.

Application

Rhodonite is a jewelry and ornamental stone, sometimes used as a facing stone.

Jewelry

The stones are carmine-scarlet and bright crimson in color. Such specimens are especially valued by jewelers.

Rhodonite lends itself well to processing:

  • Various types of jewelry are made from it.
  • The beauty of ordinary stones is more evident in cabochons, which are set in silver.
  • The highest quality specimens are diamond-cut. They are often combined with diamonds in jewelry. Such stones are set in gold or platinum.

Arts and crafts

Stone cutters and decorators appreciate stones with intricate patterns. Rhodonite is considered high-quality if gray, yellow, or brown inclusions occupy no more than 10% of the surface .

Among the stone-cutting products made from this mineral:

  • caskets;
  • figurines;
  • large vases;
  • glasses, bowls, etc.

The rhodonite collection of the Hermitage contains a vase made of a monolith weighing 2.2 tons .

Translucent stone plates are used as a stained glass component. Chandeliers and sconces are made from them. Lamp light increases the depth of color and reveals the pattern of the mineral.

Lenin's Mausoleum and the Moscow metro station "Mayakovskaya" are decorated with rhodonite.

Orlets in the service of the Russian Orthodox Church

Orlets are spread on the floor of the temple under the feet of the bishop, in key places of the temple, where the bishop stops to perform liturgical actions. The eagle is placed under the bishop’s feet in such a way that the eagle’s head is turned in the direction in which the bishop’s face will be turned at that moment.

The position of the Orlets at the bishop's services is the responsibility of specially trained subdeacons. The subdeacon-poshnik is responsible for placing the eagles outside the altar; other subdeacons do this inside the altar. Before the bishop arrives at the temple, the subdeacons place the orlets on the sole in front of the royal doors, in front of the icons of the Savior and the Mother of God, as well as in front of the icon of the holiday and/or temple, in front of the pulpit and at the entrance to the temple at the vestibule. When, after the meeting in the vestibule, the bishop moves to the pulpit, the pole carries the eagle at the entrance to the place of the bishop’s vestments. After the bishop ascends to the solea, the pole removes the eagle from the place of vestment and places the eagle’s head to the west on the edge of the pulpit.

In the altar, the orlets lie around the throne in front of the small entrance, as well as between the altar and the throne. During the reading of the Gospel, the eagle is placed on the sole in front of the lectern. The eagle is also placed at the place where the bishop gives communion. After the prayer behind the pulpit, the Orlets lay down in front of the royal doors - during the dismissal of the liturgy, as well as during the prayer of the bishop after leaving the altar after exposure; on the edge of the pulpit for general blessing, and also on the lower step of the pulpit, also for blessing people. Finally, at the exit from the temple in the place where the bishop takes off his robe.

Despite the fact that this practice is not regulated in any way, as a rule, the color of the eagle at a service is combined with the color of the bishop’s vestment, which in turn depends on the type of service: blue and light blue - the service is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, green - the service is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit or venerable saints, etc. At the same time, the bishop most often has several sets of eagles, so sometimes the practice of combining the color of the eaglets and the color of the vestments is not strictly followed.

Orlets are made by embroidering or applying individual elements (images of an eagle, a city, etc.) on a single carpet. In the modern Russian Orthodox Church there are two types of eagles - round and so-called. "cathedral". In the first case, we are talking about a classic round eagle (several of these eagles are always used at services). In the case of the “cathedral” eagle, we are talking about an embroidered carpet with the “eagle-city” composition, which covers the episcopal department of the cathedral in which the bishop serves.

Questions/Answers

Question for the Urals - what have we missed? Tell us in the comments, we will update the article.

How to distinguish a fake?

  • It is unlikely that you will come across a fake. The stone is inexpensive and is abundant in nature. But the fake still needs to be made. Moreover, so that it does not differ from the original. In short, the game is not worth the candle.
  • The stone is not refined.
  • They say that plastic imitations are occasionally found. A thermal conductivity test will help here. The plastic will become warm almost instantly, the stone will remain cool much longer.
  • A simple steel needle can help. There will be no trace left on the rhodonite; the plastic will be removed in thin shavings.

How to care?

  • The ubiquitous quartz dust can damage the gem. If you wipe it with a dry cloth.
  • Jewelers do not recommend steam and ultrasonic cleaning for rhodonite.
  • Let's resort to the old method: wash the dirty jewelry with warm soapy water, rinse off the soap with clean water, and blot with a napkin.
  • Remove rings and bracelets before contact with household chemicals and cosmetics.
  • And of course, allocate a separate “house” (case) for each decoration.

Important : jewelry with high-quality translucent rhodonite should be removed before playing sports or doing housework.
Who should wear it?

  • People who are drawn to art. The gem will help reveal hidden talents and develop already “open” ones.
  • Antique dealers will more often encounter interesting, rare, antique items. There is always a demand for such things. And he will provide the seller with a daily sandwich with caviar...

How to wear?

We don’t talk much about fashion... Large jewelry is in fashion now. If it’s a bracelet, then it’s such that no one will remember your clothes, but everyone will notice your bracelet. And more than one husband will remember you with a “kind” word when his wife starts buying dozens of similar bracelets. However, the bracelet should match either the bag or the dress.

  • Wear bracelets on your left hand.
  • Rings? Forget about thin strips of gold with a microscopic gem.
  • The trend is for rings of unusual shape and size, worthy of Tsereteli’s creations. Double and triple rings are very good, rings for the upper phalanx or just for the nail.
  • The same story with earrings. Large earrings will distract the unkind attention of envious people from you. They will study the beauty, color, length and other parameters of decoration. By the way, many jewelry works in a magical way.

What is the price?

Today we will visit talented craftsmen. Those who are happy to create beauty. In general, the “Masters Fair”.

To be honest, here you can find absolutely stunning little things and ordinary decorations that are not burdened with the stamp of the master’s talent. It’s all the more interesting to wander around these online shops (each craftsman has his own) and take a closer look at the jewelry and decorative items.

  • Here is a nickel silver ring. The fashionable look these days is large, about the phalanx of a finger. Landscape rhodonite attracts the eye. The price is quite low, 1450 rubles.
  • Earrings - eagle in silver. Also large, with landscape rhodonite, filigree.
  • Set in silver: ring 4100, earrings 4900 rubles. You can buy one or the other separately.
  • For fans of oriental cultures - Chan Lu bracelets. For the uninitiated, it is a bracelet that wraps around the wrist several times.
  • The necklace caught my attention - rhodonite, beads, beads, leather... You can’t take your eyes off it.

I'm pleased with the amount of trendy jewelry. In many jewelry stores, especially in the outback, the display window takes us back to the blessed Soviet times. But I want something new, unusual.

What colors are there?

From vague pink to bright red-pink, crimson. Depending on the variety, black veins of manganese may be present.

Rhodonites of different varieties are very different. The bright pink eagle is not at all similar to the gray-pink veined-spotted rhodonite with yellow and brown spots.

Where can I buy?

Fashionable things can be bought in online stores. Moreover, as a rule, rhodonite is not set into gold. The stone is still ornamental. Raspberry and scarlet crystals will be set in gold if they are transparent and rich in color. These stones are an order of magnitude more expensive than ordinary rhodonite.

But there is little chance of running into a fake.

What stones does it go with?

Orlets and citrine do not combine in terms of informational and planetary compatibility (this is the opinion of P. Globa).

Wear rhodonite jewelry with aventurine, turquoise, and jade.

Where can you see rhodonite?

In the Cathedral of the Peter and Paul Fortress (in St. Petersburg).

There, among the white marble sarcophagi of Russian emperors and empresses, two stand out. One is from green jasper, the second is from Ural orlets. This is a unique thing. Firstly, it is carved from a single block of stone. This hulk (weighing 47 tons!) was dragged from the Malosedelnikovsky mines to Yekaterinburg. To decide what to make of it, a whole commission was created.

She decided that the stone needed to be “preserved as much as possible without reducing, at least significantly, its size.” Opinions differed on what to make of the stone. Some suggested “leaving the monolith in its present form, grinding and polishing the stone where necessary, and using it as a pedestal for a specially made marble figure.”

Others believed that the block should be made into a giant vase or bowl. Product designs poured in, and the commission was drowned in details.

Meanwhile, the stone was waiting peacefully in the courtyard of the Yekaterinburg lapidary factory.

After 15 years, Empress Maria Alexandrovna (wife of Alexander II) leaves this world.

A sarcophagus was made for her. You can see it in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Moscow, metro station "Mayakovskaya". The columns are decorated with rhodonite.

In the Hermitage, floor lamps of amazing beauty (and size - height 280 cm) decorate the main staircase of the palace.

The vase, which created a sensation at the All-Russian Exhibition (St. Petersburg, 1870), at the World Exhibition of 1873. Diameter on the large side (oval vase) 185 cm, height 85 cm.

Why eagle?

Nobody knows for sure, but there are two main versions:

  1. The stone was first found in an eagle's nest. Therefore, the people believed that a pebble should lie in a boy’s cradle. Then he will be strong and brave like an eagle.
  2. A connoisseur and collector of gems from the Urals, A. Kalugin, gives another version. “And it’s called an eagle from the word “eagle.” The eagle is considered the king of birds, and a stone can be like an eagle of stones because it is found in large solid massifs and, thanks to its hardness and beautiful color, is used for making elegant, expensive stone things.”

Who is suitable according to their zodiac sign?

Rhodonite has positive energy, so wearing jewelry with it does not harm anyone.

According to astrologers, as a talisman or amulet, according to the horoscope, it is ideal for people born under the constellations Libra and Gemini . Under the influence of rhodonite magic:

  • Libra will become self-confident, decisive, assertive. These qualities will help in the implementation and success of various projects.
  • Gemini will have a good memory and developed intuition. Spotted rhodonite is especially suitable for this sign.

It is believed that it is more useful to wear this stone in a ring or pendant, but it can also be in your pocket.

about the effect of rhodonite on Aries and Sagittarius : some believe that it is not very suitable for these signs, others believe that their representatives have good compatibility with this gem, and it is useful for them to wear rhodonite jewelry.

How does it affect zodiac signs?

Thanks to its soft energy, the properties of Orlets are suitable for every person. It will not harm any of the zodiac signs. But we can highlight the highest compatibility of the mineral with Libra and Gemini - they feel the effect of the stone better than others. But fire signs: Leo, Sagittarius and Aries should listen more carefully to themselves when buying a talisman.

Be sure to hold the mineral in your hand before you buy. This way you can tune in to the same wavelength as him and understand whether you need him.

How to care

Rhodonite does not have very high hardness, so it must be handled with care:

  • Avoid falls and impacts.
  • Protect from sunlight and water (especially sea water).
  • You need to wash the stone in a soapy solution or clean water at room temperature (not in hot water). Use a soft brush or cloth.

It is believed that this mineral is capable of absorbing negative energy, so jewelry with it must sometimes be removed so that the stone and the owner can take a break from each other. You can rinse the pebbles with running water, but not for long.

Rhodonite jewelry

The range of rhodonite jewelry is large - beads, bracelets, pendants, earrings, brooches and rings. Jewelry is made only from rhodonite crystals, or they take one stone and decorate it with precious metals.

For a friendly meeting and casual wear, you should choose a bracelet or beads. In a formal setting, sets set in gold are suitable.
