Amethyst color: description, properties and best combinations

» Purple » Amethyst color and its combination

Amethyst color is a light pink-violet shade or a soft version of purple. Its name comes from quartz, which has distinctive shades ranging from violet to purple-pink - called amethyst. Amethyst has been known since Ancient Egypt; it was believed that it brings peace, tranquility, protects against excesses and promotes spiritual development. There is a mention of him in the Bible, where he is associated with the apostles. And all this is not surprising if we consider amethyst as a shade of purple - limitless, transcendental, in which the admixture of pink evokes a craving for care and affection, and the roots of purple give greatness and wisdom. Thus, a balanced, calm, protective amethyst appears, drawing its strength from the beyond and giving it to everyone.

Shades of amethyst color

Shades of amethyst have a pink undertone. Its light shades intersect with the lilac spectrum, and the main bone is represented by mid-tones that can be described as red-violet or a soft manifestation of purple. Tones can fluctuate with an admixture of red: they can be close to lilac or lavender. There may also be fluctuations in the admixture of gray, although mostly the shades are close to pure.

Legends about the nymph Ametis

This is an ancient Greek myth. The god of wine, Dionysus, has always been slightly (or not slightly) “under the weather.” He met the nymph Ametis. God liked the girl, and he decided to uh... get to know her better. So close that it couldn't be further. But Ametis was in love with a simple shepherd (but young and handsome). The prospect of an affair with God did not appeal to her. The nymph tried to escape from the drunken Dionysus, but it didn’t work.

The god, inflamed with wine and passion, overtook the girl, and she would have been raped if Artemis had not happened nearby. It was not worth committing violence in front of the goddess of chastity. She could not stand such disgrace. But she also felt sorry for her brother Dionysus (even though he was a stepbrother). She turned the nymph into a stone statue. Dionysus did not abandon the vile harassment. But sex with a statue is beyond the reach of even God. Dionysus read a spell over the wine, and sprinkled the petrified Amethys with that wine - suddenly he would come to life.

The spell with half and half wine did not help, Amethys remained a stone. But the divine drink painted the statue red and purple. And Artemis decided to endow the amethyst stone with the property of protecting against intoxication.

There is an ancient Roman version of the legend.

In Ancient Rome they thought more about military glory. Bacchus (the Roman god, responsible for wine and winemaking) once (the wine was sour, he didn’t drink enough or drank too much - who knows) decided that people did not respect him enough.

Bacchus swore that his pack of animals would tear apart the first person that got in their way. The first was the nymph Amethyst. The poor girl simply went to make a sacrifice to the goddess Diana (she performed the same functions in Roman mythology as Artemis in Greek).

When the animals attacked Amethyst, she began to run, screaming for help to Diana. It is not clear why, but the goddess (instead of shaming Bacchus, who was stunned by wine) turned the young nymph into stone.

The toothy animals tried to tear Artemis apart, but they couldn’t even bite - the stone, after all, was not a living body. Bacchus, having surveyed the battlefield, said:

“Wine revives everyone” and generously poured wine on the stone girl. It did not revive the nymph, only the stone became purple quartz - amethyst.

The goddess, after all, cast a spell on the stone - the wearer of the amethyst will not get drunk.

Complex combination with amethyst

A complex combination includes more than 3 shades; with amethyst you can create the following option:

- with oak color (2) - a bright, juicy combination. It has a slight warm-cold contrast that adds charm to the whole composition. As a golden shade that looks very good with all red-violet shades, oak brings out the sophistication of amethyst. - with chocolate (3) - rich, deep combination. These shades flow into each other, although they have slight light contrast. They are united by the red tone contained in both, which makes the combination harmonious. You can complement the palette with white, khaki and dark purple.

Who is it suitable for?

The main target audience of amethyst color is winter women. It emphasizes their bright expressive beauty. A black-haired winter woman can safely even wear a trouser suit of this color.

It is often chosen by ladies of the autumn type, and this decision is the right one. But you still shouldn’t overload the image; it’s better to just dilute it.

But representatives of summer and spring color types need to be especially careful. This does not mean that they need to completely abandon rich shades. It's just worth removing the amethyst details from the face. For example, trousers, a handbag, shoes can be an excellent choice, but not a blouse, hat or snood.

It is also important what color amethyst is combined with. There are enough companions for him in the spectrum.

Combination with amethyst in palettes

Lilac sunset

Soft sunset colors sometimes include lilac and amethyst shades. The twilight tones follow the warm yellow-orange, coral, pink trail of the setting sun, and at the junction of light and shadow, charming, light, warming tones of violet appear. The palette consists of sunny yellow, apricot, pale orange, lilac, amethyst, light purple tones.

Crocuses

Charming crocuses can also become a source of amethyst color. In this composition we see how harmoniously, according to natural palettes, the pink-violet shade and saffron yellow are combined, how the moderately thick green subtly emphasizes this juxtaposition. The composition includes shades of lavender, amethyst, yellow-orange, orange, leaf green, dark purple.

Ice cascade

Amethyst stars with a mint center, collected in a cascade, are one of the most impressive sights, since this combination - cold, tender, sweet - has long attracted the attention of gourmets of color compositions. The crystal pair fascinates with its incredible beauty and sophistication. The palette includes lilac, menthol, cold gray-green, amethyst, and grape.

Lovers Castle

A bright shot of a turquoise fence and a lovers' castle attached to it against a background of blurry spots from pink to purple shows us how successfully you can play with rich, clean shades, creating unconventional palettes. The composition consists of white-lilac, lavender, salmon, amethyst, turquoise, dark turquoise.

Is there one like this, but green?

There is no green amethyst. However, heating and irradiation of the gem changes its color and name. Amethyst turns into prasiolite. What's wrong, their composition and chemical formula are the same.

Prasiolite (not to be confused with praseolite and prasolite) has almost all shades of green. Moreover, the dark green color makes one think that the stone has been “ennobled.” It means it was subjected to heat treatment.

The gem looks very presentable. It can be used as an imitation of more expensive stones.

Important: you are unlikely to find natural prasiolite on sale. These gem quality gems are very rare.

Combination of amethyst with other colors

Amethyst color goes well with equally rich and summery colors. As a medium shade in warmth, it enhances the warmth of hot shades and cools cool tones, thus palettes with it do not have a pronounced contrast in warmth. As a medium tone in lightness, it combines with lighter and darker shades.

Amethyst, like a purple hue, enhances any tone next to it, the colors become more rich, bright, and saturated.

The combination of amethyst and pink is soft and feminine. In this case, it is better to take warm shades of pink - light or saturated - they differ significantly from the main tone, so they do not look like a continuation of the shade, but like a complete combination. For the palette we used pale pink, pearl pink, coral pink, red pink, and raspberry.

Amethyst combines with red - bright, unusual. This pair is like an explosion of color - maximally saturated, all-consuming. Shades of red should be chosen with a shift towards the pink side, because they connect the tones with an admixture of not only red, but also blue, which increases harmony. For example, consider a palette with light red, red rose, ruby, bright burgundy, wine.

Color combination: amethyst with orange - juicy, amazing. Thermal contrast works here because orange is considered the warmest tone. Shades of orange can be either with a red or yellow undertone, as well as muted ones: with an admixture of black or blue - autumn tones. For example, light peach, coral, sea buckthorn, dark orange, red.

Amethyst and yellow are a sweet, full combination. Golden shades will look more attractive next to this color than bright, clean tones. This combination reveals nobility and consistency, and not just a bright flash, as with pronounced tones of yellow. For you, a table with sand, honey, mustard, yellow gold, bright gold.

Amethyst and warm green combine naturally and harmoniously, because this combination is not only the most common in colors, but is also an additional pair. To soften the brightness of the palette, it is worth pairing muted shades, such as green tea, olive, leafy green, pine, brown-green.

The combination of amethyst and cold green is restrained and crystalline. The combination of an extremely distant pair is no less attractive than an additional one, but it is calmer and nobler. In this case, you can take clean and clear shades; they will not spoil the painting, but will add freshness. Consider combinations with menthol, mint, emerald green, emerald, malachite.

How to combine amethyst and blue, blue? The coldest shades of blue will create a slight warm-cold contrast, in which the main tone will be warm. Tones with both purple and green undertones will be good in a couple. The latter will look softer than the former. For example, a table with soft blue, thrush egg color, dark turquoise, Prussian blue, dark blue.

Amethyst and purple - a combination in one color scheme. Both lighter and darker tones can be combined here. The first is like a highlight, the second is like a shadow - both of them lead to a deepening, increasing the volume of the main shade. The undertones of paired colors can also be attractive. Consider combinations with blue-violet, violet, purple, red-violet, grape.

Amethyst and brown combine softly and smoothly. These two colors enhance each other, while bright, rich tones of brown look more advantageous than others. Both shades with yellow and red undertones will look impressive. For example, consider tables with the color of oak, yellow-brown, golden chestnut, mahogany, chocolate.

The combination of amethyst with white, beige, gray, black - a neutral range - depends on each color individually. White gives freshness and aroma to amethyst. Beige – gloss, vitality. Gray – severity. Black – evening look, gracefulness. The table includes cream, beige, taupe, anthracite, black.

The stone is considered blessed, awakening the best qualities in the wearer. It brings love and peace. To enhance the magical effect, it is better to wear it in pairs: earrings with a ring, a ring with a pendant. You can simply wear a stone amulet. Or even keep it on your desktop for successful career growth.

Whatever shade it is, the effect of the gem is equally strong. The main thing is the naturalness of the mineral.

Amethyst color in clothes

Amethyst color in clothing is more for women than for men. Delicate, radiant, it amazingly transforms a warm or cold, but always contrasting appearance, such color types as “spring” and “winter”. Amethyst shades are good in home clothes, underwear, summer dresses and weekend suits. In a business wardrobe it can only be in the form of an accent - small spots - jewelry or a blouse under a gray jacket. The calming effect of this tone does not allow it to be used in active sports or recreation, but amethyst is wonderful for relaxation and romantic adventures.

Meaning for Zodiac Signs

In astrology, amethyst is considered a universal stone. Its properties are maximally manifested for representatives of the Air element. But air signs need to know what color amethyst will suit them. It is pink crystals that will help them realize themselves in all areas of life: career, family and creativity.

In addition, amethyst helps each sign cope with certain life problems:

  • Twins. Representatives of the zodiac constellation are not distinguished by stability and affection. With a purple talisman they will find inner harmony and inspiration, thanks to it they will successfully start and complete important things.

  • Scales. People born under this sign are versatile personalities. Amethyst will help them in self-development and self-improvement. For Libra women, jewelry with a beautiful gem guarantees increased attention from the stronger sex.
  • Aquarius. The lilac amulet helps to sharpen intuition among representatives of the air sign. Aquarians will be able to quickly climb to the top of the career ladder and will become successful in personal relationships. With such a talisman they will not be afraid of any problems in life.

Combination of amethyst-colored clothes

Amethyst color in clothes must be combined carefully so as not to look like a parrot. Restraining neutral tones such as white, grey, beige and black will help reveal the color, concentrate on it, and create a strict, laconic image - elegant, seductive. Cool shades: mint, emerald, blue - have a positive effect on color, creating a rather juicy composition, but restrained. Yellow, light green, pink tones should be used in combination with amethyst very carefully, since their bright and haunting color is enhanced in the presence of amethyst. Very light shades or colors with impurities will be the best choice in this case, unless you want a bright look.

How to spot a fake

Since amethyst products are in great demand, some sellers may offer customers a fake instead of a natural stone.

With modern technologies, it is possible to produce a material that will be difficult to distinguish externally from natural gems. But fake samples give themselves away by their lack of color depth, low hardness and strength, and instability to temperature changes.

When placed in water, artificial stones do not lose their color around the edges, which is what should happen with a real amethyst. When heated, a purple crystal gradually loses its color intensity, while an unnatural specimen will lose its color in fragments.

People have long learned to synthesize artificial amethyst. Fake minerals are grown in special laboratories using specified color parameters. In this case, you can even choose the size of the crystal that you want to obtain in the end. The price of fake amethysts is practically no different from the cost of a natural stone.

Amethyst should only be purchased from trusted jewelry stores that have a good reputation.

Amethyst color in the interior

The amethyst color in the interior concentrates attention, so a minimal amount of furniture and decorations is a worthy option for design. This color can be supported by cool neutral tones such as white, gray, black. However, when creating an interior in an oriental style, excesses and colorful solutions with warm shades are possible.

Unusual shoes

Ankle boots, shoes or sandals of amethyst color can become the main “trick” of the image. You shouldn't choose a bag or belt of the same shade, but accessories with a floral or geometric print will be an excellent choice.

Bright pumps or high-heeled boots can be called an all-time classic, but you should also pay attention to trends. Today, sports shoes of unusual colors are in fashion. For a trip or walk around the city, you can choose amethyst sneakers or sneakers. In short, if you wish, you can always include some detail of a given shade.

Wear jewelry correctly

If for you a product with a gem is a simple decoration, you don’t have to read this part of the article.

But if you want to use the full spectrum of amethyst properties, then this is the place for you.

For proper operation, a natural gem is set only in silver. No gold, not even white. Gold “quenches” the energy of the gem. Nobody knows what alloys like white, pink, green do with it. That is why esotericists look disapprovingly at merchant rings in bulky gold frames.

But no one bothers you to wear gold earrings with amethyst (well, I like them!). It's just a beautiful decoration. There won't be any magic there.

We put on the ring with an amethyst (set in silver, natural stone) correctly.

For a woman, this means wearing a ring on the left hand; for men, it is advisable to wear a bracelet or ring (signet, ring) on the right hand.

The color range of amethyst is extensive. Lavender, pinkish, and lilac tones are more suitable for women.

The “male” gem has dark, dense purple flowers.

Place of Birth

The gem is not considered rare; deposits are found all over the world. The main deposits in the world are represented in Zambia and Zimbabwe. In the territory of the former USSR it is found in the Middle Urals in granites and syenites. Found in basalts in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.

The most valuable stones in the Urals are supplied by tons from Brazil, but they are of low quality.

For the first time in the world, in the USSR, the industrial synthesis of amethyst from watered silica was carried out with the subsequent growth of crystal druses.
