Who is a jeweler

The profession is very ancient. Even before our era, man sought to decorate himself and stand out from other people. Already in ancient times, jewelry was aimed at demonstrating the social status of the owner. Belonging to a particular nation was also determined by the decorations. Not everyone knew how to handle precious metals and stones, so these rare specialists were called jewelers. The profession has always been prestigious and in demand.

How to learn jewelry making

This went on for three years; the aspiring jeweler did not receive any money during his training.

“I asked a lot of questions and came to some conclusions myself. I opened books on jewelry making, but it’s difficult to learn from them, there are a lot of special terms. Now, thank God, there are YouTube channels where everything is shown clearly from A to Z. At home you can make yourself a workbench and become a jeweler just by watching YouTube. Sit down and do it, in six months something will work out. a chain tier in two to three months. It's hard to learn patience."

“Nothing will work out the first time. From the second to the tenth, nothing may work out.”

Inside the profession

But you can’t just go and become a jeweler based on your own desire. To become successful you need to have talent, work hard and be very patient because the job involves fine motor skills. The profession itself is divided into several types. A distinction is made between a mounter, an engraver, a fashion designer and a jewelry designer.

The assembler is engaged in assembling simple decorations. The engraver puts various inscriptions and complex designs on them. In the hands of a fashion designer is the opportunity to create an original piece of jewelry. But the designer is exclusively engaged in developing the appearance of the future decoration.

A jeweler has a lot of tasks, so his competence includes several complex sciences: mathematics, chemistry and gemology.

I learned everything myself

I have no jewelry education, I am self-taught. I believe that internal motivation, perseverance and a great desire to absorb the necessary information and find application for it helped me become who I am now.

I received most of my practice from books, video tutorials, and blogs. I attended master classes in an online format, no on-site ones. I gain experience in a targeted manner - if I have a question about jewelry, I ask it specifically to jewelers, who also work via the Internet and freely share any information.

There are many who refuse to share their experience - this is normal in an artistic environment - and among jewelers as well. For example, a jeweler I knew, to whom I went like an annoying fly, trying to remember what and how he worked, how his workplace was set up, did not take me to study with him, but preferred a girl from his family. Of course, it was a pity, but it was thanks to his surprise and praise when I showed him my first products, made at home without special tools, that I realized that I already needed a workshop.

Workflows

In addition to self-education, I went to the gym and developed my physical strength so that I could roll out metal on hand rollers, since it is difficult for a woman to do this by hand. That’s how I won the girls’ powerlifting championship in 2016.

Where to work

A jeweler has a large field for activity. You can work not only in private workshops, including your own. Those who want to be part of the corporate culture can work in state-owned enterprises and factories. Jewelers are also always welcome in specialized stores. A good jeweler who masters his profession can cope with any level of tasks and create jewelry according to his own or designer’s sketches. If you want to be a free bird and have your own brand and its fans, it makes sense to think about opening your own workshop.

Cost of repairs and jewelry making

Repair of broken chains, broken locks and deformed rings is done in specialized workshops. The cost of repairing jewelry is from $3 to $30, while the master earns from $350 to $500 per month.

A talented designer who creates exclusive items earns $2–3 thousand per month. The price of the finished product is determined based on the cost of the material and the remuneration of a professional.

If precious metal scrap purchased from the public is used as a raw material, then 1 gram of 585 costs 956 rubles. ($14.3). For his work, the master receives from 150 rubles. ($2.25) per 1 gram of product. The retail price of jewelry in the store is from 2100 ($31.5).

When purchasing a gold bar from a bank, you have to pay a significant amount of VAT.

This method is used by large manufacturers of gold products. The final price of 1 gram of gold products of the same standard is 3,200 rubles. ($48).

Cleaning silver items with a steam generator is completely free. Experts advise regularly ultrasonic cleaning of silver items. To protect it from contamination, rhodium plating is done - covered with a thin layer of rhodium. The price depends on the size and weight of the jewelry - from 40 to 300 rubles. ($0.6 – 4.5) per 1 gram.

Revenue from colleagues in the CIS

Jeweler services in Ukraine are not very popular, so the earnings of specialists leave much to be desired.

In the regions they receive:

  • Nikolaevskaya and Kharkovskaya – 10,000 UAH ($364);

Employers offer a maximum salary of 9,400 UAH ($342). The jeweler-mounter receives 10,000, and the setter - 6,000 ($218). The master's apprentice receives a salary of 2,100 UAH ($91).

A private jeweler works for himself. He sets up a workshop in one of the rooms of his apartment or rents space.

Quite a lot of money is spent on purchasing equipment:

  • special machine;
  • microscope;
  • drills;
  • raw materials.

For the production of exclusive jewelry they pay from 600 UAH ($22) per 1 gram. During the wedding season, the income of a good specialist grows to 50,000 UAH ($1,820) per month.

Pros of the profession

Like any other profession, there are pros and cons.

First of all, this is the high demand for the profession in the labor market. The profession can also be acquired by those who, for whatever reason, have limited mobility. The work requires only hands and a keen eye. People with limited ability to work can express themselves fully in this profession and not feel disadvantaged in society.

Jeweler is a very promising profession. As a rule, after graduating from college or institute, inexperienced jewelers begin their practice at large state-owned factories or in jewelry manufacturing companies. In a large team, junior employees are usually entrusted with working on simple orders in order to hone their skills and put their acquired knowledge into practice. Yesterday's graduates enter production with a zero rank, but gradually, as they gain experience, they are awarded the next rank. There are seven ranks in total, and the seventh is the highest. Specialists with this level can safely apply for the post of director of an enterprise or open their own jewelry production business.

I would also like to note the presence of a narrow specialty. Of course, if you wish. If you don't want to do cutting, you can always dedicate yourself to jewelry repair. The work, of course, is not often creative, but it depends on how you look at it. Repairing unique, intricate jewelry definitely requires creativity.

How I started creating jewelry

I was born and raised in Lesosibirsk. A nurse by training, she graduated from a local medical college and worked for almost a year as a nurse in a surgical department. At the time when I entered, I didn’t know who I wanted to be, what was interesting to me. There was no spark with any other case.

As a child, I attended art school, I liked to draw and I was good at it. Many years after its completion, just before the start of my creative journey, I got married and gave birth to a son, sat at home, and did everyday things. One fine day I tried an interesting material - polymer clay. Working with her infected me, ignited me, and gradually I realized that creating jewelry was probably my calling. This is what I have been doing for 10 years.

Cons of the profession

This profession has medical restrictions. For example, there should be no mental illness or eye problems. It must be borne in mind that vision may decrease over time, because the work requires concentrating on the smallest details.

It is impossible to master the profession on your own, because this requires specialized equipment, and it costs a lot of money.

A person must have certain character traits, such as perseverance, concentration, accuracy, patience and physical endurance, because the work is sedentary and there is no opportunity to move a lot.

There is a possibility of injury because the jeweler works with a lot of chemicals to process the metal and stones. There are especially many dangerous acids in the working environment: hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric.

From grandfather to uncle to grandson

It often happens that being a jeweler is a hereditary profession. This is what happened with Maxim.

“Grandfather worked as an engraver for half his life. My uncle was a jeweler. When I was offered to become his student, at first I refused, but then I finally went to study. I came and looked. My uncle told me how and what to do. And then I tried myself.”

Almost immediately, the student began to be entrusted with making simple products for clients. “I spent hours melting metal,” recalls Maxim Kulagin. — When you start, a lot of things don’t work out . Some products were remade four or five times. The work is coming to an end, essentially all that remains is to polish, and after polishing you notice that the product is a little crooked - you have to redo everything.”

Salary by country

And of course, salary. In general, a jeweler’s salary is good, but it must be clarified that the amount depends on the qualifications of the craftsman, the demand for products and work with additional options in the form of repairs. This is what a jeweler's salary is made up of.

Of course, the highest salaries for jewelers are in Moscow. According to experts, it is about 100 thousand rubles. Then comes St. Petersburg and Kostroma, in these cities the salary varies around 67 thousand rubles. The average salary of a jeweler in the country is about 79 thousand rubles. Also, the final amount depends on the direction and qualifications of the specialist.

The first works were sold at the local market

The first period of my creativity was so touching that I don’t remember it without tears. I practically did not sleep for the first five years, sacrificing my personal time and rest. At that time, my son was still small, my husband and child lived in a one-room apartment, and my men calmly endured the sounds of the drill and hammer blows.

I went to sell my first jewelry to the people - near my house there was a market with many shops, where I walked with my old phone box, which contained jewelry.

At first there were no orders for 3-4 months, then they began to appear little by little thanks to the VKontakte group in which I posted my works. During that period, I studied various techniques and ways of working with materials, and looked for suppliers of accessories. Everything I needed - earrings and other components - I got from my mother’s and my old jewelry. Then, of course, the level of skill increased, I began to invest in materials and tools.

I worked with polymer clay for about a year and a half, after which I began what I call the era of “soldering” - I learned to solder various metals with a soldering iron (not yet with a torch). In general, the very first thing I soldered in my life was an old Vesna-212 tape recorder. His wiring broke due to frequent rewinding, and one day at the age of 12, early in the morning, while everyone was sleeping, I took out all my father’s accessories, sat in my room, soldered these wiring to the buttons and since then I have been repairing my tape recorder myself.

Many of my friends and even relatives did not understand my such a strong passion. My mother insisted that the hospital had stability and a full social package, but this did not attract me. From my circle, my husband supported me and said: “Do what you like, Zhenya, what suits your soul!”
