    Even 100 years ago, sketches were used in jewelry, today they have been replaced by innovative technologies. Models of future jewelry are created using computer programs that ensure accuracy, allow you to quickly make edits and change the design, and also calculate the production budget. All this work is performed by a jewelry 3D modeler - a specialist with good taste, understanding of customer requirements and fashion trends. The profession can be mastered through online courses. A jewelry 3D modeler will be able to work in companies and also create designer jewelry.

    Features of the profession

    A jewelry 3D modeler is a highly qualified specialist who knows the basics of jewelry making and knows how to interact with modern technologies and design solutions. In Russia, this profession has appeared recently, but specialists are already in demand and this trend will strengthen. Jewelry 3D modelers can significantly reduce the cost and speed up the process of creating jewelry of any complexity. By involving them in the project, the company prevents manufacturing defects, errors and other problems that entail serious financial costs.

    Computer programs make it possible to create jewelry designs characterized by different levels of complexity. Jewelry 3D modelers perform the following work:

    • develop jewelry designs using their imagination or the customer’s brief;
    • They calculate the cost of the finished product and, if necessary, reduce its cost. For example, they replace materials and stones with those that will make it possible to make a beautiful, but more affordable decoration;
    • create, process and visualize 3D models, as well as prepare them for printing;
    • can create sketches of jewelry;
    • control the production process.

    Jewelry 3D modelers must understand materials, textures, stones - from appearance to individual properties. They develop the design of earrings, rings, pendants, chains and other products, so they must be able to sense the client’s desires and analyze the market.

    When 3D is not cinema, but jewelry design

    Just recently, three-dimensional computer images seemed like something fantastic to us. Gradually, animation and three-dimensional modeling began to be used not only in the field of cinema and computer games, but also in architecture, science, medicine, industry and, of course, jewelry production.

    3D modeling, with the help of which realistic three-dimensional objects are created, allows you to “revive” any ideas of artists. We will tell you about the work of SOKOLOV 3D modelers.

    Meet the 3D modeler

    3D fashion designers appeared at jewelry enterprises relatively recently, but have already become indispensable specialists. These are real wizards who blur the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space.

    But seriously, 3D modelers are unique specialists who have the skills of designers, can work with the latest computer programs and high-tech equipment, and at the same time know the technology of jewelry production.

    Dmitry, 3D modeler: “When I came into this field about 10 years ago, 3D modeling in jewelry production was still at the initial level. Therefore, it was interesting to come up with new methods and methods of construction, to observe how products from the simplest and most primitive become more complex and beautiful. Now, looking back, we can safely say that I was not mistaken in choosing a profession and the work I do still remains my favorite.”

    3D modelers are the people who begin the difficult but very interesting process of turning a drawn model into a real piece of jewelry,

    From sketch to model

    If you think that the artist’s work ends with the approval of the sketch, you are mistaken. In order for the decoration drawn on paper to turn out the way the author intended, the creation of its three-dimensional model takes place in close cooperation between the artist and the 3D modeler.

    Having received a detailed technical drawing, the modeler loads it into 3D editors. It is in them that, with the help of various tools, the decoration is created - a three-dimensional copy of the sketch drawn by the artist.

    The basis of a future virtual model most often resembles a piece of plasticine. However, it all depends on the program that the designer uses - in a number of 3D editors, three-dimensional images are created using lines and thousands of polygons.

    In order to fully convey the artist’s idea, a computer modeling specialist superimposes a transparent sketch onto the three-dimensional image directly in the program. Thanks to this, it is possible to repeat each line and make the model as accurate as possible.

    During the work process, the artist can make adjustments, add or remove individual elements. The author of the jewelry evaluates the three-dimensional image from the point of view of the overall aesthetic impression, but all the technical nuances are controlled by the 3D modeler.

    Ivan, 3D fashion designer: “We work with unique creative people, with artists who give us the opportunity to contribute to the creation of jewelry. I myself have an artistic education, so I understand them very well. I like that we have the opportunity to accurately implement the original idea using programs and tools. The most difficult thing is to convey “naturalness”. That is, it is easier to make an abstract model than, for example, a model with floral motifs. But here new technologies come to our aid - it didn’t work in one program, we try in another.”

    The designer must focus not only on the sketch, but also take into account some technical characteristics, without which it will simply be impossible to cast jewelry in gold or silver. These parameters include, for example, the thickness of the metal, the diameter of the stones, their arrangement, etc. All such adjustments are made to the 3D modeler by a jewelry production technologist.

    “It is not so easy to realize an artist’s plan in three dimensions. We need to meet the technical requirements: thickness, height, size... We are essentially jeweler-model designers, only instead of a bur and a burr we use virtual tools. The use of modern 3D programs gives a clear picture of the final product. It looks like you can touch it on the screen! There is always an opportunity to correct and refine without spoiling the model,” - Sergey, 3D modeler.

    Thus, the process of creating a three-dimensional model allows you to predict in advance possible pitfalls and correct shortcomings that may appear when casting a metal product. This makes it possible to produce jewelry of the most unusual designs.

    Prototyping

    A computer file with a jewelry model is saved in a universal format, after which it is transferred for prototyping - that is, the creation of a real, rather than virtual, model of jewelry using 3D printing.

    For this, a polymer or wax printer is used. Before the advent of modern equipment, designers made a prototype of a future product by hand, which took much more time and effort. In addition, 3D printing allows you to identify the smallest imperfections that are simply impossible to notice in sketches. How does a 3D printer work?

    The operating principle of this equipment is similar to ordinary office equipment, only instead of paint cartridges there is wax or polymer, and instead of a flat picture there is a three-dimensional figure. The resulting models are placed on a virtual table, after which they are “grown” using polymer or wax (depending on the type of printer).

    The wax printer uses two types of material: support and construction. With the help of the latter, layer by layer, the “growing” of the model occurs. After this, it is placed in a special oven. The supporting wax melts, but the construction wax, which has a different melting point, remains. The volumetric model is placed in a solvent and then dried.

    Another type of printer involves making prototypes from many layers of polymer, which hardens only under the influence of laser beams.

    Before going to casting, the resulting polymer or wax prototype is further refined and only then goes to the modeling section.
