Green diamond is a luxurious gemstone with a fancy color and is highly sought after by collectors.
It is called the Dresden Diamond. The color range ranges from pale green to emerald. It is this characteristic that determines the cost of the gem. The diamond stone itself and the diamonds from which this precious stone is made are characterized by a high price and are considered very rare. Therefore, you will not be able to find jewelry with such a gem in the average jewelry boutique. Unique luxury items can be purchased by individual order or at auction.

History and origin

In 1741, a large green diamond was purchased by the Saxon Duke Frederick Augustus II. The weight of the stone exceeded 40 carats. The gem had an attractive natural shade. The stone became one of the symbols of the city of Dresden, receiving the name of the same name. The Green Dresden Diamond remains the largest naturally occurring green diamond today.

Where do green diamonds come from?

Scientists have been able to identify a number of reasons for the appearance of a unique green color of varying degrees of intensity. Why does a diamond become colored?

  • the internal crystal lattice is deformed;
  • exposure to radiation;
  • Diamond's formula includes nitrogen.

In order for a green stone to form, the mineral must contain a moderate amount of nitrogen. If there is a lot of this substance, the diamond will turn brown. A tiny amount of nitrogen will turn the mineral yellow.

The intensity of thorium irradiation is a factor that affects the expression of color. If the rays penetrate deep into the stone, the color of the mineral will be saturated. Surface exposure produces a pale color.

Green Diamond Standard

The standard of all minerals is the very first Dresden green diamond, pear-shaped and weighing 41 carats. Its original weight was greater, but during processing the gem lost more than 50% of its weight.

Where is it used?

Natural green diamonds are used as jewelry or investment material.

Jewelry sphere

Natural diamonds are reserved only for luxury jewelry.

Pebbles with shades (green-blue, grayish, yellowish) look stylish and non-trivial. What stands out is the “chameleon” - an olive-gray pebble with an alexandrite effect. Under different lighting conditions, it changes color from blue-gray to olive or green-yellow.

Jewelry is made to order. The frame is platinum or high-grade white gold. They have little effect on the cost of products. Cutting diamonds is more expensive: stones of this level are trusted to top-class professionals who work for months.

Refined crystals are more common: irradiated natural, but aesthetically unattractive diamonds. After processing, the greenish pebble becomes rich and beautiful. It does not leave the laboratory until the radiation level decreases, so the products are safe for humans. This characteristic reduces the price of the stone by an order of magnitude, that is, a carat is valued not at 250 thousand dollars, but at 25 thousand. You can buy or order rings, beads and necklaces of the same style.

Investments

The richer and more intense the shade, the more expensive the stone. This is a characteristic of any colored diamond.

Blue-green diamond ring

Green specimens are in second place in terms of rarity and value: they are ahead of red ones. The third are purple stones.

The price of green diamonds up to one carat starts from 250 thousand dollars per carat, larger crystals - from 1 million dollars per carat.

There is a struggle for every pebble; experts shell out money unthinkable by the standards of an ordinary person. Thus, the 5.03-carat Aurora Green diamond went for $16.8 million at Christie’s auction in Hong Kong in May 2016. Experts estimated its value at about $5.5–6 million.

A natural green specimen of pure color is an exclusive item with the highest value. More often these are stones whose main color is complemented by blue, gray, olive, orange and yellow shades. Impurities reduce the diamond's value, but it is still a worthwhile investment.

Healing and magical properties

The bright green mineral has not only a unique radiance, but also numerous magical properties, as well as healing powers. Represents hard work, good health, and courage.

Magic properties:

  • protection of pregnant women from disease and misfortune;
  • the energy of the gem will allow you to avoid complications during childbirth;
  • the stone favors people engaged in intellectual activities;
  • Helps reduce anxiety and get rid of painful thoughts.

Who is suitable according to their zodiac sign?

Green minerals are reliable talismans for Aries. Such diamonds help representatives of the fire zodiac sign to become lucky and confident in their abilities. The gem will also become a faithful assistant for Leo and Sagittarius, helping to develop talents. Representatives of other zodiac signs can also wear diamond jewelry, but its energy will not have any tangible effect on fate and health.

WE CARE BEAUTIFULLY

Green diamonds are capricious luxury stones. In order to preserve their presentation longer, certain rules are followed.

What and how to wear it with

Expensive gems in fancy shades are not worn every day. Green diamonds “come out” with the richest people on the globe. The wardrobe must be appropriate: only from the most prestigious fashion houses.

Compatibility with other stones

  • Light green gemstones harmonize with colorless diamonds.
  • Of the precious metals, only high-grade white gold and platinum are suitable.
  • If we take into account the energy combination, green diamonds are not suitable for greenish opaque stones: jade, malachite, amazonite, etc.

Storage and care rules

The storage conditions themselves are not so important as safety. If you are careless about organizing security, the stones can be stolen.

  • Each gem should be in a separate box or bag.
  • The storage location should be located away from heating devices and sources of increased background radiation.
  • You cannot clean gems yourself. No wiping with napkins, washing, etc. Expensive stones are cleaned with ultrasound in jewelry stores.

How to spot a fake

A unique gem obtained from a natural diamond does not go on mass sale due to its uniqueness. Today, you can only purchase a rare mineral by individual order or at auction. A genuine specimen is awarded a quality certificate issued by the Gemological Institute of America.

The document provides information about the location of production, external characteristics and weight. Certificates are also awarded to those stones that were grown in the laboratory using special equipment. It is impossible to detect a fake at home. This task is the responsibility of an experienced gemologist.

Technology for producing green diamonds

For centuries, natural colored diamonds were the property of only a select few. Today, thanks to scientific progress, technologies for modifying the color of diamonds have emerged. Such stones with artificially changed color are an order of magnitude lower than diamonds mined from a natural deposit.

Of the variety of methods used, three can be mentioned:

  • irradiation (irradiation),
  • HTHP (combined heat and pressure),
  • use of special coatings.

To obtain a green color, the irradiation method is most often used. An ordinary yellowish diamond can be turned into a fancy green diamond by exposing the crystal to radioactive radiation.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, many experiments have been carried out for this purpose. The pioneer here was Sir William Crookes, who in 1904 dyed a diamond green using radiation in the laboratory. But it was impossible to wear this diamond due to the fact that it became a source of radioactive radiation.

Main conclusions

  1. A natural green diamond is one of the rarest stones. The Dresden Green Diamond, whose history dates back to 1741, is considered the standard.
  2. Diamonds to obtain unique gems are mined in South America, as well as in Australia.
  3. The stone is credited with pronounced magical and healing properties. It is ideal for Aries, Sagittarius and Leo, as it helps to develop the best qualities of character. Representatives of other zodiac signs can also wear jewelry with rare diamonds. But it will not exhibit magical properties.
  4. Used in the jewelry industry and investing.
  5. The price of 1 carat depends on the origin of the mineral. Specimens grown under artificial conditions are tens of times cheaper than those obtained from natural diamonds. The buyer of a synthetic diamond must be informed of the origin of the stone by the seller.
  6. At home, it is impossible to distinguish a green diamond from a copy. The examination is carried out by an experienced gemologist using special equipment.
