One of the most valuable and most beautiful treasures of the earth's storerooms is sapphire - the stone of power and leadership. Since ancient times, people have strived to possess this stone; it has traditionally been considered the stone of rulers, kings and kings. But sapphires were also worn by clergy, sailors, sorcerers, alchemists, simply rich people and, of course, women. The indescribable play of the stone, its rarity and uniqueness, numerous magical and healing properties, made sapphire a symbol of luxury and success, strength and fidelity, foresight and intuition. And although geologists consider stones of exclusively blue color, the so-called fancy sapphires, to be real jewels, stones with a wide variety of shades and colors are also beautiful, expensive, and energetically powerful.

Sapphire - stone of Power

There are many poetic legends and tales associated with sapphires. This stone was valued in Egypt, Rome, India, China, and Judea.

The ancient Greeks considered sapphires to be drops of the ambrosia gods' drink, spilled from Olympus. In India, the origin of these crystals was also associated with the drink of eternity, drops of which were spilled on the earth by the god Brahma to give people the opportunity to glimpse the wonders of the world of the Gods. In Scandinavia, Thor was responsible for the appearance of sapphires, who turned the tears of a beauty, who was waiting for the return of her beloved, into blue stones.

The high priest of Ancient Egypt, Khonsuemheb, wore an amulet on his chest, symbolizing the power and wisdom of King Solomon; this talisman, according to legend, was made of sapphire.

In Sri Lanka there is a legend about a young man who knocked a star from the sky, along with a piece of the firmament. This is how the star sapphire appeared.

History of the name

The first deposits of sapphires were discovered in Asia. Here they were called corundum. There are three possible sources for the modern name of the stone.

These include:

  1. The Babylonian word sipru meaning "scratcher".
  2. In Persian, all blue stones were designated by the word sapir.
  3. The Latin word sapphire has the same meaning.

In the ancient Russian state, sapphires were called yakhonts, distinguishing them by color. The rich blue stones were called baus.

Experts in mineralogy call stones colored blue sapphires. Jewelers are expanding this list by including corundums of other shades - fancy sapphires. The exception is red sapphire, which is called a ruby.

Types of sapphire

From a chemical point of view, sapphire is an ordinary aluminum oxide, which underlies a number of other beautiful semi-precious stones. But what makes sapphire unique is its special crystal lattice, which gives the stone extraordinary hardness, and a number of metal impurities that color sapphires in different colors.

Classic, real sapphire has a bright blue color, which is given to the mineral by titanium and iron oxides. Ideally, a real gem should have a cornflower blue color, but depending on the amount of impurities, the shade of blue can be darker or brighter.

Sapphires of other colors and shades are called fancy. Most of them are not as expensive as the classic ones, but at the same time they are distinguished by a real riot of colors, bright beauty and a variety of magical and healing properties.

The main types of fancy sapphires include:

Leucosapphire. It is a colorless stone, completely free of foreign impurities.

Yellow sapphire. This stone is given its color by nickel impurities, depending on the amount of which the color of the sapphire can range from light yellow to orange.

Black sapphire. This is a stone with a large amount of titanium and iron impurities, but, in essence, the same classic blue sapphire. Its true blue color can be easily distinguished under a microscope.

Pink sapphire. Stone with manganese impurities, mined in India.

Green sapphire. The unique color of this stone is due to the admixtures of cobalt and magnesium.

Purple sapphire. A very rare gemstone mined exclusively in Australia. Its color is due to vanadium impurities.

Padparadscha. An amazingly beautiful Indian sapphire, combining shades of pink and yellow. Is very rare and expensive.

In addition, among sapphires, stones with asterism, that is, star formation, are distinguished separately. On the surface and inside of such stones, under certain lighting, you can see the silhouette of a star. This unusual effect is given by rutile impurities.

And alexandrite sapphires stand out, beautiful stones that can change their color depending on the light. Initially light blue, when the light changes, such gems can become cornflower blue, black and even pink.

Physicochemical characteristics

Sapphire is a variety of corundum and is the top tier of the four most expensive gemstones. It is surpassed in hardness only by diamond.

Heat treatment discolors the crystals; exposure to x-rays increases the density of the sapphire color.

Use of sapphire in magical practices

The magical properties of sapphires are wide and varied, and their use in extrasensory and magical practices is equally widespread. The stone of power, or the stone of leadership, as it is also called, has a strong ability to enhance a person’s intellectual capabilities, gives clarity of mind, improves memory, and allows one to find extraordinary solutions. This is a stone of intuition and even foresight.

The powerful energy of the stone allows it to serve as an excellent talisman, providing protection from negative energies, damage, the evil eye, envy and slander. Like a boomerang, the stone returns the negative energy to the ill-wisher. Amulets help restore damaged aura and human energy field.

Sapphire and love

Not all types of sapphire are equally suitable for making love amulets. Thus, stones of cold shades are considered less suitable for love magic, in contrast to crystals of sunny shades.

Some of the strongest love amulets are those made from pink sapphire, which is also called the stone of passion. Such an amulet helps preserve the feelings of lovers, helps achieve reciprocity, and promotes a long and happy marriage.

Also, very powerful love amulets are made from star sapphire. They strengthen feelings, increase sexual attractiveness, and help create a strong and happy family.

But talismans of blue, a classic color, best cope with betrayal and infidelity.

MORPHOLOGY

It occurs in the form of barrel-shaped, dipyramidal and tabular pseudohexagonal crystals, separately disseminated grains and granular aggregates. The faces of prisms, dipyramids and pinacoids are often covered with rough oblique shading. Typically, fairly well-formed barrel-shaped, columnar, pyramidal and lamellar crystals are observed, sometimes reaching large sizes (up to a decimeter in diameter). The most common faces of the hexagonal prism {1120}, hexagonal dipyramids {2241}, {2243}, rhombohedron (1011} and pinacoid {0001}. Often the faces of prisms and dipyramids, as well as the faces of the pinacoid, are covered with oblique shading, and in other cases it is observed hatching in the horizontal direction due to twinning along the pinacoid.

Sapphire and money

Many precious and semi-precious stones have such a useful property as the ability to attract money. Effective amulets and talismans are made from such stones. But our hero is not one of these “money” stones. Although its main property is to help a person gain power and become a leader, it indirectly affects material wealth.

If you wear a ring or ring with sapphire on the index finger of your left hand, or wear it in a pendant, then this stone will help in business development, contribute to the successful implementation of new ideas and plans, that is, lead to material wealth. But the efforts of the person himself will play an important role in acquiring wealth. Sapphire will not make a person rich, but it will help him create wealth.

Description

This mineral is jewelry corundum, crystalline alumina. On the Mohs hardness scale, only diamond is higher than it. Other characteristics of the stone:

  • glass shine;
  • high strength;
  • dichroism, that is, beam splitting, creating a play of light;
  • porous structure, as a result of which completely pure stones are rare.

In addition to the classic blue, there are other shades called fantasy. The colors of sapphire are determined by impurities.

High temperatures discolor the crystal, but x-rays do the opposite. At the beginning of the twentieth century, artificial stones were synthesized.

Sapphire for health

The healing properties of sapphire are diverse and unique. This wonderful stone can save a person from many diseases, even such serious ones as plague or leprosy.

There is a positive effect of the gem in diseases of the heart and vascular system, in diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including chondrosis and radiculitis. They treat insomnia and neuroses, skin diseases, eye and ear diseases, even speech defects.

Sapphire powder was used in ancient times to speed up the healing of wounds and for diseases of the genitourinary system and gastrointestinal tract. It is also known that wearing a crystal has a positive effect on human reproductive function.

Water infused with sapphire improves human immunity and helps against colds.

It has been noticed that wearing a gem, even in the form of jewelry, promotes longevity and mitigates negative age-related changes in the body.

Medicinal properties

The healing properties of the mineral have been studied for centuries. Lithotherapists have found that the gem treats heart disease, asthma, skin diseases, kidney diseases, and women's ailments. Helps with diabetes, migraines, removes stones from the body. Improves mental state.

Sapphire is a stone of longevity. Maintains clarity of mind, inhibits senile ailments such as sclerosis or marasmus.

  • yellow - debugging the body’s functioning, increasing immunity, relieving depression and stress;
  • blue - treatment of headaches, dermatological problems, inflammation, heart disease, blood vessels;
  • green - improved sleep (the stone is placed under the pillow), vision;
  • white - maintaining peace of mind.

Yellow sapphire is energetically strong and can be worn periodically. With constant use, the stone provokes anxiety and restlessness.

Sapphire water is healing: the pebble is infused in it from sunrise. Wash wounds, sore areas of the body, eyes.

How does sapphire feel in silver and gold?

The royal stone sapphire is traditionally set in a gold setting. It is gold that gives the stone its sophistication and emphasizes its beauty. A stone set in gold “plays” best. At the same time, gold enhances the magical capabilities of the crystal, in particular its ability to resist negative energy. It is also believed that a gold frame enhances the leadership qualities of the wearer of the stone.

Less commonly, the crystal is placed in a frame made of silver and platinum. But if the platinum frame is generally neutral to the different qualities of the stone, then silver enhances the healing qualities of the mineral.

Sapphire is not placed in a frame made of base metals, but the crystal is often used without any frame at all, because this amazing stone is a miracle and a luxury item in itself.

Price

It is one of the four most expensive gems. To understand how much a sapphire costs, you need to consider the following factors:

  • color;
  • size;
  • purity;
  • transparency;
  • cutting;
  • weight;
  • natural or refined specimen;
  • origin (place of extraction).

To increase the value of sapphires, they are refined. Purity and transparency are increased by filling voids with wax, oil or glass. Heat until the inclusions dissolve and the desired color saturation.

The most expensive are cornflower blue from Kashmir or Ceylon and Tanzanian songea (this is the name of the place where it is mined). It has increased purity, a rich green-red palette, often with a star. Examples of value (price per carat):

  • cornflower blue – $300–1000, without heat treatment – from $1000;
  • padparadscha – $130, if the weight is more than five carats, the specimen is considered a collectible, the price of 1 carat starts from $30 thousand;
  • yellow – $100–120;
  • green – from $75.

Low quality materials are priced not per carat, but per piece – $10–20. Gray sapphire only matters if there is an asterism effect.

It's nice to have at least one piece of jewelry or stone, purchased, gifted or mined personally. A collection of sapphires of different colors will become a source of pride, a family heirloom, and will bring harmony to your home.

How to cleanse sapphire from foreign energy

Sapphire itself is the strongest source of positive energy, but at the same time it easily absorbs foreign energy, including negative energy. Therefore, the practice of energy cleansing for the crystal is common. Any person who holds this sensitive stone in his hands inevitably leaves his own energetic trace in the mineral. It doesn’t matter whether it was the previous owner of the stone, its cutter, jeweler, or just a random person who was once interested in the stone and turned it over in his hands in a jewelry workshop or store. In any case, the purchased gem must be cleaned of energy traces so that the stone can restore all its best qualities.

Cleaning sapphire of negative energy is done with ordinary running water, and it is better to use “living” water from springs or rivers. Tap water can also cleanse a stone of negative energy, but this method will not be as effective. The time it takes to completely clear a crystal of past negativity is approximately two hours. The mineral should be dried in the fresh air, but not in direct sunlight, because this stone reacts very poorly to ultraviolet radiation.

How to add strength to a sapphire?

After cleaning any stone from negative energy, it should be charged as quickly as possible with its own positive energy. Most often, the sunbath method is used, but it is not suitable for sapphire. As already mentioned, ultraviolet radiation is contraindicated for this stone. Therefore, for the gem, the best effect will be recharging the internal structure of the stone with the help of moonlight.

To add strength and energy to the sapphire, you should leave the stone under the moonlight overnight on a clear moonlit night. In this case, it is best to use the last phase of the Moon before the New Moon or the first phase of the Moon, which occurs immediately after the New Moon. Please note that ideally, moonrise on this day should occur within the next hour after sunset.

Who is sapphire suitable for according to their zodiac sign?

The most useful gemstone may be for the “fiery” signs of the Zodiac - Leo, Aries, Sagittarius. Astrologers use it to harmonize planets in the horoscope. The main magical properties of this stone are associated with the fire element. But sapphire combines much worse with the elements of water and earth, and the mineral has the most negative relationship with Capricorn.

Sapphire for Aries

For hot-tempered and often overly emotional Aries, sapphires add balance, calm, and restraint. At the same time, the gem gives Aries confidence in their own abilities, promotes the development of intuition and even clairvoyance, which allows Aries not only to get along well with people, but to become real leaders.

Sapphire for Taurus

Sapphire cannot help calm and stubborn Taurus gain even more confidence, and they don’t need it. But to improve their communication skills, make them excellent rhetoricians, teach them to capture the attention of listeners, the crystal will be quite capable.

Sapphire for Gemini

For Geminis who are changeable in their moods, sapphire allows them to gain not just confidence in their abilities, but also to gain some kind of inner core, a balancer. It will allow Gemini to clearly stick to the golden mean and not rush to dangerous and adventurous extremes.

The crystal will help representatives of this sign get rid of the effects of stress and depression, look at the world with optimism, and make new acquaintances and connections.

Sapphire for Cancer

The influence of sapphire on representatives of this sign is very insignificant. The stone slightly increases the energy potential of Cancers, helps them gain confidence in their own abilities and balances the emotional impulses of this creative personality.

But as a healing amulet, sapphire turns out to be almost ideal for Cancers. The mineral solves any health problems for representatives of this sign reliably and quickly.

Sapphire for Leo

A strong, purposeful, but overly emotional Leo needs sapphire to find inner harmony. It balances Leo's emotional impulses, makes them calmer, but at the same time does not in any way reduce Leo's famous tenacity. At the same time, the crystal can add kindness to Leos and the ability to better understand other people, which will make representatives of this sign the favorites of society, people capable of capturing the attention of others and thus achieving their goals.

Sapphire for Virgo

Fire sapphire interacts poorly with the earth element. But this does not mean that it will be completely useless for Virgos. For practical and sensible Virgos, the stone can give greater confidence and increase determination. At the same time, representatives of this sign will interact more easily with other people and will make new friends and acquaintances. In love affairs, the gem will help Virgos find their other half and find happiness in personal relationships.

Sapphire for Libra

Representatives of this zodiac sign already have proper balance and a clear vision of their goals, so sapphire will be useful for them in terms of gaining self-confidence, emotional stability, and the ability to resist negative influences. And so excellent workers - Libra will become even more accurate and efficient. But at the same time, the stone will give Libra the opportunity to influence the emotional and psychological state of the people with whom they are in contact.

Sapphire for Scorpio

For representatives of this sign, the value of sapphire lies primarily in its magical properties. The best amulet that can protect Scorpios from negative energetic influences will be an amulet made from this energetically strong stone.

And again, the ability of the mineral to give a person confidence in his abilities will help Scorpios fight both their own fears and the machinations of other people.

Sapphire for Sagittarius

One of the most important qualities of Sagittarius is their sincerity, and sapphire will help representatives of this sign learn to use this character trait for their own purposes. Sagittarius will be more decisive, courageous, and able to attract the attention of the opposite sex.

The crystal will give representatives of this sign the ability to achieve their goals in any conditions. In addition, the stone helps Sagittarius achieve success in their personal lives, find their soulmate, harmonize their inner world, and get rid of internal contradictions.

Sapphire for Capricorn

For leisurely but persistent Capricorns, this stone may not give the best gift - it will add to them stubbornness and self-confidence, which representatives of this sign already have quite a bit of.

This can complicate Capricorns' communication with other people, and thereby slow down the achievement of their goals. Therefore, it is better for Capricorns to refrain from wearing sapphires.

Sapphire for Aquarius

For the analytical mind of Aquarius, sapphire will give the opportunity to better predict the consequences of one’s actions, strengthen intuition, and contribute to the development of creative potential. Aquarians will finally be able to clearly express their thoughts, become more understandable and accessible to others, and this will certainly become a guarantee of personal and career success.

Sapphire for Pisces

As for other water signs of the zodiac, for Pisces the stone will first of all turn out to be just a beautiful decoration. He doesn’t harmonize well with people of this sign, but he can add optimism and perseverance to Pisces in the face of life’s difficulties.

Sapphire in jewelry for men

Sapphires in dark, calm tones—green, black, blue—are best suited for men. Such decorations emphasize the high social status of the owner, his business and leadership qualities. The owner of the stone will never get lost in the crowd; the sapphire, like a magnet, will attract the views of other people to him and force him to take his opinion into account.

Most often you can find massive signet rings, men's rings, cufflinks and tie pins. The gemstone is also used in expensive wristwatches.

Place of extraction

Several countries conduct industrial mining of the mineral. Top class cornflower blue specimens are mined by hand in Kashmir at an altitude of 4000 m for four months of the year when the mountains are free of snow. Australia produces 80 percent of all stones, but they are inexpensive, in price terms only a quarter of the world market.

Sapphire

Padparadscha, rare pink and blue “Ceylon” gems, come from the island of the same name. Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam and Cambodia are rich in greenish “Siamese” minerals. Multi-colored specimens are found in Africa (Tanzania, Kenya) and the USA. In Russia, non-jewelry raw materials are mined in the Urals and Khibiny Mountains.

Sapphire in jewelry for women

Almost any shade of sapphire is suitable for women, from the brightest, soft pink, to deep blue, except, perhaps, rare black colors. Lighter shades of stone are better suited for young women, darker ones for older women. In any case, jewelry with sapphires is desirable for any woman, because this gemstone has the ability to emphasize the natural beauty of the owner, attract the attention of men, and makes its owner the center of attention.

Jewelry with sapphire is perfect for any situation - for going out into society, for a party, for work.

The range of jewelry with it is very large - rings, earrings, pendants, pendants, tiaras, bracelets, brooches.

One of the five most important stones in the world, according to Hindus, sapphire is truly a royal stone, a stone of power and leadership. This expensive and beautiful mineral is fraught with many useful magical and healing properties; it can become an effective amulet and talisman, but it can also simply be a luxury item. In any case, sapphire is a unique stone; there are very few minerals like it, and therefore it is considered almost priceless. To possess at least one sapphire means to possess the world.

Where is it used?

The origin and properties of sapphire have led to its use in the jewelry industry or as a technical material.

Jewelry

Sapphire as a gemstone is in demand by the fashion industry. Suitable for men's and women's jewelry. Men's rings, tie clips, and cufflinks are used to decorate men's rings, tie clips, and other muted gemstones.

It is worth considering that in publicly available Soviet jewelry from the 60s to 80s, the stone was synthetic. This was rarely indicated on the tags.

Leucosapphire looks like a diamond, and they are often combined to make the jewel more accessible. The combination of blue stone with white gold or platinum is a royal option. But other colors also look no worse, especially in different types of gold. Delicate pink stones are chosen by fans of glamor.

Silver ring with blue sapphire

Budget option for the domestic market: silver, artificially grown or degraded sapphire, cubic zirconia. The cost of jewelry starts from 990 rubles.
