Midas - why did the rich king almost die of hunger?

At all times, people were attracted by wealth, and most importantly, by the opportunities it gave. It would seem that in the presence of precious things, gold and silver, a person became above his own destiny. However, ancient legends reveal to us another side of luxury.

Even if you have everything, you need to have the mind to manage it all wisely. Even the richest man remains a beggar if he is stupid and self-confident. This is precisely the case that Ovid describes to us when talking about Midas. The name of this mythical hero has been a symbol of enormous wealth for many centuries. But did it bring happiness to its owner?

King Midas and the drunkard Silenus

Midas was the richest man in Phrygia. This is not surprising, because the land of roses was his kingdom. Legends were told about the beautiful gardens surrounding the luxurious palace of Midas.

The scent of roses could be heard at a great distance from them, and their beauty surpassed all other flower gardens in Greece. Living for his own pleasure, Midas did not need anything and simply enjoyed the life of a king and a rich man.

One day, one of the companions of the god Bacchus came to the wonderful garden of Midas, intoxicated from night festivities and entertainment. His name was Silenus, but in his image I see fate itself, which decided to test the king. When the guards found the drunkard, they decided to amuse their ruler.

Fat Silenus was dressed in a pink outfit, hung with garlands and wreaths of roses. It was in this form that he appeared before Midas. Having cheered, the king invited the guest to a feast, which lasted ten days. Midas asked Silenus who he was and where he was from. It was he who led the lost traveler to his patron god Bacchus, who taught people how to make wine from grapes.

There is only gold around

There was no limit to the joy of Bacchus that he met again with his beloved servant and companion in drunken games. As a sign of his gratitude to the hospitable Midas, he offered to make any wish, which he would immediately fulfill.

I consider this moment to be the apogee of the stupidity of the king, who had not shone with intelligence before. Striving for only one thing - his own enrichment - Midas asked Bacchus to endow him with an extraordinary ability. God frowned when he heard about the request, but did not argue - after all, he himself promised to do everything that the stupid king asked.

In an instant, everything Midas touched began to turn into gold. The king almost went mad with delight when he saw that the fingers that touched the banquet table turned it sparkling gold.

The fool could not even imagine that the piece of food he brought to his mouth would also become pure gold. The unfortunate king could not eat even a grain, because everything around him became precious metal. Hating the shine of gold and almost dying of hunger, the rich man asked Bacchus to save him.

God gave him the right advice: Midas had to go to the bank of the Pactolus River, the waters of which would “wash away” the cursed gift. Only this bathing saved the king from starvation, and from then on people began to find gold grains in the sand on the banks of this river.

Midas turns his daughter into gold

Midas - myth or reality?

The name of this company is more like an encrypted prediction and refers us to the mythical lord Midas, although perhaps we don’t have to go far - some of us still have a piece of that same gold-lover, endowed with the fatal gift of turning everything he touches into precious metal ...

The opening of the new Moscow jewelry factory "Midas" took place in the spring - in April 2009. It’s incredible, but it’s true: the young company, which had not yet even surpassed its five-year mark since its birth, quickly got back on its feet. Its arsenal includes modern equipment from the best manufacturers and quite extensive production facilities: diamond cutting, waxing, tapping, branding, casting, molding, mounting and polishing.

Despite the rampant economic crisis that took place at the initial stage of development, the company, as if by magic, easily found its customers and business partners. The success of the brand has been repeatedly confirmed by numerous awards at various regional exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Sochi and Kazan.

Success, as in any other business, is due to the composition of highly qualified specialists, whose skills have never been questioned here. An important role is also assigned to experienced and professionally competent top managers who can react sensitively to events, changes and trends in the jewelry market.

But the most important secret of the brand, of course, lies in the range of its products: following the “from simple to complex” scheme, they began their journey of mastering the jewelry business with consumer goods - economy class products. These were high-quality items made of 585 gold without precious inserts at an incredibly low price. The affordable price was explained by the lightness of the jewelry, which was achieved using the latest methods of processing precious metal.

Over time, the company's enormous internal potential gave impetus to the development of a new direction. The first models of jewelry with amazing inserts appear in the collections, and the lines of jewelry are presented in a new assortment:

· fancy rings with a diamond cut without inserts or inlaid with cubic zirconia;

· wedding rings;

· bracelets and chains of popular knitting - Singapore, nonna, diamond, anchor, bismarck, turtle, lav or snake;

· fantasy earrings, as well as bright and modern earrings in the form of “congo” rings, fashionable and current studs or colorful children’s earrings;

· pendants and pendants, fantasy or in the form of zodiac signs, as well as church themes.

Fatal competition

Is this really the end of Midas' stupidity? No, so I’ll tell you one more legend. One day, the forest spirit Pan became so proud of his musical skills that he decided to compete with Apollo himself, the god of the arts. The god of the mountains Tmol and the already familiar King Midas were invited as judges.

The melody that Pan played on his pipe was charming, but against the background of Apollo’s playing it seemed simple and devoid of many colors. No earthly music could compare with the melody of the god of art. When the time came to choose the winner, Tmol immediately noticed that Apollo had the upper hand in this confrontation.

Midas, who understood nothing about the art of music (as well as everything else), found Pan's playing more interesting. He made this choice at random, guided by the fact that the simple motive was clearer to him than the beautiful sound of the strings of Apollo's cithara.

But, you see, if Midas had at least a little caution and forethought, he would have chosen God as the winner, which would have eliminated many problems. Or maybe he was such a principled judge? This is hardly possible, given the lack of will of the rich man.

How to convert samples into carats?

In the metric system of samples, which are considered standard in the Russian Federation, there are markings such as 375, 500, 585, 750 and 999. For example, sample 375 means that one kilogram of precious metal alloy contains at least 375 grams of natural gold. Pure gold has a purity of 999, but why not 1000? The whole point is that 1 unit, or rather its 0.01% part, falls on a conditional ligature.

The karate system is widespread in almost all European countries, as well as in the USA. The karat is a conventional unit that corresponds to pure gold (do not confuse the karat used to value gold with the karat of precious stones). According to the karat system, natural gold without any impurities is valued at 24 carats. In Europe and the USA, there are the following standard hallmarks: 9, 10, 14, 18, 24. That is, if the number 10 is indicated on the product, this means that 24 carats of the alloy account for 10 parts of pure gold, while impurities account for 14 ct.

To convert carats into samples, you should remember one simple formula for calculations: first of all, the number of carats should be divided by 24, and then the result obtained should be multiplied by 100, which will allow you to convert carats into samples. If we consider, for example, 14 carat gold, then it will correspond to 585 standard. What features does such an alloy have?

And the earth has ears

So, the victory was awarded to Apollo, but God was not going to forgive Midas, who made a choice not in his favor. Noticing that he should have a better understanding of music, Apollo “gifted” Midas with large donkey ears - in order to hear better.

The disfigured king tried in every possible way to hide his ears under a long hat. Has no one ever seen him without a hat? There was only one such person, the king's hairdresser, who swore to sacredly keep the ruler's secret.

I will not discover America if I say that sometimes it is important for all of us to speak out in order to make our souls feel better. This desire tormented the hairdresser, who wanted to share his secret with someone. No, no, he did not betray Midas and turned out to be a truly decent person.

Only one day, unable to keep the knowledge to himself, the barber went to the river bank, where he dug a small hole. He only told the earth that Midas had donkey ears. The barber buried the hole and, having calmed down, walked away, but in the spring a reed grew in this place, which, rustling, quietly told all passers-by the story of a stupid king, whose wealth did not save him from ugliness.

Nicolas Poussin. Midas and Bacchus

The myths about Midas reveal to us the deep faith of the ancient Greeks in the power of their gods. Even in competition, the wise had to go over to the side of the strongest, namely God. Midas himself is a symbol of wealth combined with stupidity. Due to the lack of any forethought, this king almost died of hunger and was “rewarded” with donkey ears. The mind cannot be replaced by either gold or silver.

Characteristics of 14 karat gold

For 24 carats of this alloy there are 14 carats of pure gold, so high-quality jewelry can be made from it, including those with precious stones. In addition, jewelers add metals to the ligature of such an alloy, which can change the shade of gold. For example, if the impurities are white metals, then this allows you to get beautiful white gold. Also, 14-karat gold can have red, yellow, pink and lemon colors - it all depends on the ratio of the components of the alloy.

Gold, valued at 14 karats, has many benefits. First of all, it has excellent wear resistance, strength and beauty. Today, 1 carat of such gold is valued in Russia in the range of 3500-4500 rubles (in the product). The price per gram of metal in this case is determined by the complexity of the work of the master jeweler and the brand of the jewelry manufacturer.

To choose genuine 14-karat gold, purchase it only at a large jewelry store, which will help you avoid purchasing a fake.

Reasons for the popularity of 14K products

14 karat gold is very popular all over the world, as it has the best price-quality ratio. It is the most common and affordable option. Thanks to this, the choice of jewelry made from it is greatest. It is ideal for daily use.

The alloy has very good characteristics. Jewelry made from 585-karat alloy is quite durable, while all the characteristics of gold are preserved.

585 gold ring

Over time, it does not darken, does not oxidize, and is resistant to wear. It has high rates of malleability and plasticity, which allows jewelers not to be limited by strict boundaries, but to create.

The alloy of this sample consists of 58.5% base metal. To it are added: zinc, silver, platinum, palladium, nickel. Depending on this, decorations may have different colors. For example, copper gives a reddish tint. If the amount of silver predominates, the product becomes greenish. To obtain white color, platinum, nickel or palladium are used.

The alloy is most common in Russia.

Metric and carat system

Previously, in pre-revolutionary Russia, a spool system was used. Nowadays, other two main systems are used all over the world - metric and carat. All of them indicate the ratio of the weight of gold to the weight of the alloy; only the number of shares differs. The maximum value is:

  • 96 - spool valve;
  • 1000 - metric;
  • 24 - carat.

The remaining values are fractions of these numbers. In the karat system, the standard hallmarks are 24, 18, 14, 10 and 9, while in the metric system they are 999, 720, 585, 373 and others. In order to convert a pure carat to the metric system, you need to divide it by 24 and multiply by 1000.

In fact, carats in the West denote not only the fineness of precious metals. Its very first use is to indicate the weight of precious stones and minerals, such as diamonds. Carat weight was first established in Paris in 1907 and is considered a non-systemic unit. Its value is 200 milligrams. What’s interesting: a 1-carat diamond measures about 6 mm.

In some countries, for example, in Britain, the carat is also a non-systemic unit of measurement for the purity of the alloy.
