What to bring from Israel as a souvenir or gift

If you are planning a holiday in Israel, this article is for you. Whatever type of holiday you choose in this interesting and diverse country, you will probably want to buy something as a souvenir. We will tell you what to bring from Israel, where to buy it and how to choose it. Whether you're traveling to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Eilat or another city, our smart shopping tips should help you in this matter.

Israel is a small country, but each of its regions lives a special life. People go to Jerusalem to pray, to the Dead Sea for treatment, to the Red Sea to enjoy a lazy beach holiday, to Tel Aviv to have fun. But wherever you go, you will almost everywhere find something that you can buy as a souvenir.

The national currency of Israel is the new Israeli shekel (the current exchange rate to the ruble, dollar and other currencies can be viewed in our currency converter). It is most profitable to change money at certified exchangers, which are found in almost all tourist places. We do not recommend changing money at the airport - the commission here is too high.

In almost any souvenir shop you can buy magnets with images of Israel (from 7-8 shekels), standard keychains (from 10-12 shekels) or T-shirts with symbols of the country (from 40-50 shekels). But if you are looking not only for typical tourist souvenirs, but for something really interesting and useful, take a look at our tips.

So, what can you bring from Israel?

Medicines

Many of our compatriots go to Israel for treatment. Medicine in this country is one of the best in the world. Accordingly, pharmaceutical products here are of the highest quality. This is why many tourists wonder how to buy medicines in Israel.

Answering this question, it’s worth saying right away that Israeli pharmacies are very different from Russian ones. Most drugs here are available with a prescription. A striking example is Nizoral shampoo (a popular anti-dandruff remedy) in Israel you cannot buy without a prescription. From here it is clear that apart from vitamins, dietary supplements and organic medicines, you will be able to purchase practically nothing here. However, if you have a prescription, feel free to take it to the pharmacy and get a good discount.

The largest chain pharmacies in Israel are Superpharm and Newpharm. In these pharmacies you can buy not only medicines, but also cosmetics. By the way, it will cost less here than in duty-free. In addition, in pharmacies you can freely buy hygiene products and medicinal teas, tinctures and other supplements of natural origin. Most often, tourists buy creams and ointments in Israeli pharmacies to treat eczema and psoriasis.

Cosmetics

Perhaps this is the most popular souvenir from Israel. Local cosmetics are famous throughout the world. They often buy it for themselves, and also take it as a gift to loved ones - both women and men. What cosmetics should you buy in Israel?

One of the most popular products is Dead Sea mud. It costs about 30-40 shekels per kilogram.

Where to buy cosmetics in Israel? We do not advise you to go shopping for it in open markets, since many products can deteriorate under the scorching sun (the only exceptions are soap and bath salts - classic and with the addition of various oils). Your best bet is to shop at cosmetic retailers like Nella. Here you can sometimes save a lot of money on buying cosmetics, since discounts on many products are very common. You can also look for Israeli cosmetics in regular supermarkets and pharmacies - here you can also make very profitable purchases. But in duty-free the choice will be a little more modest, and the prices for some products are even higher than in the city.

Prices for Israeli cosmetics in Israel are, of course, lower than in Russia and other European countries. They depend on the product itself and the company - everything is the same as everywhere else. They start at about 30 shekels per product. Whatever product you choose, Israeli cosmetics are one of the best souvenirs of this country, which is really worth buying for yourself and as a gift.

Charms

Amulets are one of the most popular souvenirs from Israel. Perhaps they are brought even more often than religious paraphernalia. Many believe that in the holy land of Israel, amulets have a much greater energy charge than anywhere else.

Red thread

You've probably heard about the popularity of an amulet in the form of a red thread, which is tied on the wrist to make wishes come true. Many people order it from Israel via the Internet. If you find yourself on holy land, it makes sense to buy it for a loved one or for yourself if you believe in the power of this amulet. The price of red thread in Israel is low - about 2-3 shekels. Some of them are already consecrated - this can be found out from the seller.

The red thread needs to be tied into 7 knots by a loved one. They wear it until it breaks. When this happens, it is believed that all wishes will come true.

Anchovy

Hamsa is one of the most popular Arabic amulets. It is believed that this symbol protects against the evil eye. If you don’t know what you can bring to your child from Israel, consider buying this amulet - children usually like jewelry with a hamsa (a palm-shaped amulet).

Hamsa is sold in the form of keychains, pendants and bracelets. If the anchovy is not made of precious metals, then jewelry with it will cost you only 5-10 shekels.

You can buy such amulets in almost any souvenir shop in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Eilat or at the market.

Star of David

Various jewelry, clothes and souvenirs with the image of Mogen Dovida (the six-pointed Star of David) are very popular among tourists. This is one of Israel's most recognizable souvenirs. You can buy things with the Star of David in religious places, in souvenir shops, and in markets. Most often, tourists choose keychains and pendants with this amulet.

Religious paraphernalia

Israel for religious people is the Holy Promised Land, and religious people are sure to find many valuable relics here. This is equally true for Christians and for those who profess Judaism and Islam.

Minors and Chanukiah

Minorah (menorah) and hanukkiah are candlesticks, the most ancient symbols of Judaism.

The minor is designed for 7 candles; it serves as a symbol of Divine protection and Miracle.

Hanukkah is intended for 8 candles - according to the number of days in Hanukkah. In the center of the Hanukkiah there is another socket for a candle, from which it is customary to light the other 8 candles.

Candlesticks are made of metal, and candle sockets are usually ceramic or glass. Its price depends on what metal was used to make the candlestick. The most inexpensive products can be purchased for 40 shekels ($10).

Travelers who have visited the Holy Land advise buying such candlesticks not in souvenir shops, but in religious shops. They are a little cheaper there.

Tallit

The tallit is a rectangular-shaped cloak that is used as a prayer garment in Judaism. The size is standard (1 m x 1.5 m), and the fabric can be different: cotton, linen, silk, wool.

This robe costs from $16.

Icons

For believers, an icon from Israel is not a souvenir, but a deeply revered shrine. Church shops sell consecrated Christian icons, prices for which start at $3.

In addition to famous icons, there is one very special one that can be brought from Israel to Russia. It is called the “Holy Family” and has special veneration among Israeli Christians. The image of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus Christ and her husband Joseph the Betrothed is intended to serve as a reminder of the inviolability of marriage bonds and to protect the family hearth, to bless advice and love.

Bales

Kippah is a small round cap worn by Jewish men. The choice of bales is huge: sewn from material, knitted from threads, with or without religious ornaments.

You can bring such a hat as a souvenir from Israel to a man you know.

Prices are approximately as follows (in shekels):

  • simple bales – from 5;
  • models with beautiful complex patterns – from 15.

Candles

Most pilgrims try to bring candles from the Holy Land. At the same time, it is important that they undergo the rite of consecration, that is, burning with the Holy Fire. The following advice would be appropriate here: directly in Jerusalem, buy a torch of 33 candles and perform a ritual with it.

The cheapest bundle of 33 paraffin candles costs 4 shekels ($1), of wax candles - about 19-31 shekels ($5-8).

oil

Oil is olive or any other oil with added incense that has gone through the process of consecration. People believe that oil gives health and fills with energy.

The oil is sold in small bottles, prices in shekels start from 35.

Star of David

What can be brought from Israel as a gift to almost every person is a product with the Star of David - an ancient symbol of the Jewish people in the form of a six-pointed star.

The most popular product is a chain with a pendant in the shape of the Star of David. The cost of such a souvenir is determined by the value of the metal from which it is made. The simplest and cheapest pendants (5-10 shekels) are offered everywhere.

Anchovy

Khamsa (Hand of the Lord) is an ancient amulet designed to protect against the evil eye, used in Judaism and Islam.

The hamsa has the appearance of a palm facing downwards, and it is absolutely symmetrical, since the little finger replaces the other thumb. In the center of the palm there is an image of an eye.

You can bring Hamsa as an amulet for your home or car, or you can buy a small keychain for $2-3. The amulet is also sold in the form of jewelry: a simple bracelet or pendant will cost from $0.5, silver and gold jewelry, of course, is more expensive.

If a child needs such an amulet as a gift, listen to this advice: bring a keychain or pendant made of bright colorful rubber. Every souvenir shop offers such products especially for children.

Cosmetic products

Another item that arouses constant interest among almost everyone who visits Israel is the cosmetics produced here. Lipsticks and eye shadows in unique shades, effective anti-aging creams, pleasant scrubs, therapeutic serums, different types of shampoos - the choice is huge, and it’s up to you to decide what kind of cosmetics to bring from Israel for yourself or as a gift.

Israeli cosmetics have a number of characteristic features. Of course, this is excellent quality and high efficiency, which are ensured by a unique natural composition. Almost all types of cosmetic products contain water, salts or mud from the Dead Sea, as well as an extensive complex of various vitamins. Natural ingredients and the absence of fragrances mean that the appearance and smell of the products are often not very pleasant. A short shelf life (on average from 6 months to 1 year) is considered by many to be a disadvantage, although this can well be considered an advantage: after all, this indicates naturalness and the absence of preservatives.

Considering all of the above about Israeli cosmetics, we can safely give the following advice: a jar of shampoo or healing mud can be a very good gift from Israel.

Ahava

The following brands are well known: Barbara Wolf, Dead Sea Premier, Sea of life, Ahava, Gigi, Golden Age, Egomania, Anna Lotan, Biolab, Angelic, Danya Cosmetics, Mineral Beauty System, Fresh Look and Sea of SPA.

  • cream – $2;
  • salt scrub – $16-17;
  • Dead Sea salt – $8-9;
  • scalp mask – $2;
  • Dead Sea mud – $2.5-10.

Professional cosmetologists give ambiguous advice: buy any cosmetics in pharmacies or stores opened at factories (Ahava and Sea of life). This will allow you to protect yourself from purchasing counterfeit goods.

Popular Israeli jewelry

Jewelry created in Israel is in constant demand among fans of everything beautiful and valuable.

Diamonds

And now some advice to wealthy tourists on what to bring from Israel. Of course, diamonds or jewelry with them! Although this state does not engage in diamond mining, diamonds are more affordable here than in Russia or European countries.

This is explained by the fact that the famous Diamond Exchange is located in Tel Aviv! The stones themselves or products containing them (together with the corresponding passports) can be purchased profitably at the Diamond Exchange branches in any major city.

Valuable advice from experienced tourists: during your next tour to Israel, you can return the boring diamond item and get another item (with an additional charge, of course).

Eilat stone

Malachite, chrysocolla, turquoise - these minerals are very beautiful, but their combination is simply fantastic. And the Eilat stone, which is also called Solomon’s stone, is precisely a natural combination of these gems.

Jewelers combine it with silver or lemon Israeli gold, creating beautiful rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, cufflinks, and tie holders.

At the factory in Eilat (address: Israel, Eilat, 88000, Eilat, Haarava St., 1), processed Eilat stone is offered for $2 per 1 gram. For $30 you can buy a small pendant; a ring will cost at least $75.

The stone was mined near the Gulf of Eilat in the Red Sea, but now development of the deposit has ceased due to depletion of reserves. Therefore, the advice of jewelers to buy items with Eilat stone is understandable, because they become truly unique!

Antiques and ceramics

Lovers of antiques will definitely consider that it is necessary to bring some ancient thing as a souvenir from Israel. You need to purchase antiques only in those stores that have the appropriate license.

It should be taken into account that according to Israeli law, it is prohibited to export antiques made before 1700. Such items can only be removed with written permission from the Antiquities Authority in Jerusalem. In this case, you will have to pay an export duty of 10% of the price of the product. Management is not responsible for the authenticity of the item!

By the way, not only antique ceramics deserve attention - you can bring home painted Armenian dishes as a good souvenir. To avoid taking counterfeit goods - and traders in any market have a lot of them - experienced tourists advise going to the Armenian quarter in Jerusalem. In many workshops, true craftsmen offer not only to purchase unique painted dishes, but also to watch the process of its creation.

Food has always been considered one of the best gifts from a trip to a foreign country. The following are tips on what edibles to bring from Israel, because there really is plenty to choose from.

If you want to surprise even more with your gift, bring dates with nuts inside. With such a filling the price will be higher - from 90 shekels, but the taste is worth the additional cost.

Pea hummus

In simple terms, hummus is pureed peas with the addition of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, paprika, and sesame paste. Not for everyone, but it’s definitely worth eating it yourself and bringing it to your friends! Israelis make sandwiches with hummus and eat chips and nuts with it.

By spending only 10 shekels ($2.7), you can buy a nice edible gift - hummus in a 0.5 liter jar.

Don't miss this important tip: hummus is a perishable product, so you need to buy it before your flight. Moreover, it is sold everywhere, including at the airport.

Honey

You can also bring home a sweet gift - natural honey: apple, citrus, eucalyptus, or the most popular date honey.

Honey is sold in specialized retail outlets and markets. If you make a purchase at the market, then, according to the advice of experienced tourists, only at Carmel in Tel Aviv - they offer only genuine honey, and not sugar syrup.

For 10 shekels you can get a 300 g jar of honey - quite enough for a good souvenir.

Honey is considered a liquid product and is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage.

Coffee with this spice is available in every large store, and in the Mahane (Jerusalem) and Carmel (Tel Aviv) markets. Prices are about 16-18 $ per pack.

You need to choose such a gift very carefully: the pack should be sealed and only green in color, it should have a logo with a cardamom leaf.

Shopping in Jerusalem is inextricably linked with the purchase of religious shrines. Jerusalem is the center of world religion, but pilgrims and tourists can buy religious paraphernalia almost everywhere in Israel. What do they buy most often?

The only place where the mineral is processed and souvenirs and jewelry are made from Solomon Stone is Cadurit-Eilat Stone. A rare natural appearance, a rich color reminiscent of the depths of the ocean, the unique properties of the gem - all this puts the mineral on a pedestal. Souvenirs and jewelry made from ancient Eilat stone are a valuable gift for yourself and your loved ones.

Clothing and jewelry

Israel cannot be called the center of world fashion, but shopping in this country will still not disappoint you. In addition, it is worth paying attention to the beautiful jewelry.

Diamonds

If you are not limited by funds, be sure to buy diamond jewelry in Israel. The fact is that this country is the world's largest supplier of this precious stone. So prices for diamonds here will be lower than, perhaps, elsewhere.

You should only buy diamond jewelry in Israel in specialized stores so that the seller can show you the product passport.

Gold and silver

Gold prices in Israel are also pleasantly different from what we are used to. It is even more profitable to buy Israeli silver. Almost every shopping center in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Eilat and other cities has jewelry shops and entire departments with very beautiful jewelry. Israeli craftsmen know their craft well and create truly attractive things that will be a good souvenir for yourself or a gift for a loved one.

It is also better to buy gold and silver in Israel only where they can show you a quality certificate. We advise you not to look at such things at all in the markets - there are a lot of fakes there. The most popular manufacturer of silver jewelry in Israel is Magnolia. The shops of this company are present in almost every shopping center in Tel Aviv and other cities in the country.

Tourists often buy silver cups and candlesticks, as well as dishes in Israel. True, it is worth asking the seller whether the souvenir is really made entirely of silver, since most often there are products with silver plating.

Eilat stone

This traditional stone of Israel is most often sold as jewelry set in silver. It can be recognized by its beautiful green color and interesting azure splashes. Beads and bracelets, earrings and pendants – there is jewelry with the Eilat stone for every taste.

Don’t be afraid to buy such things in regular stores, they are practically not counterfeited. Please note that prices for Eilat stone are rising over time - mining in Israel has already stopped, so Eilat will soon become a rare and valuable rock. Now a small pendant with an Eilat stone will cost you about 150 shekels, and a ring with it will cost about 250 shekels.

Natural fabrics

If you are wondering what to bring your children from Israel, go to a store with children's things. In this country, they treat children very carefully, so they sew clothes of excellent quality from good natural fabrics for them. The prices are quite reasonable, and the best place to buy children's clothing in Israel is in the markets.

By the way, remember that you can and should bargain in Israeli markets. Even if the price is written on a particular product, you can knock it down by a third, or even double. If you don’t bargain, you also offend the seller - they think that you treated them condescendingly. These are the subtleties of Israeli culture - remember them. And don’t worry - most sellers speak Russian (both in markets and in souvenir shops)

In addition to children's clothing from Israel, it is worth bringing good quality items for yourself and as gifts for loved ones. We are talking about shirts, tunics, trousers and skirts and other clothes made from natural fabrics. You can also buy some home textiles - most often these are bed linen sets, silk tablecloths and bedspreads. It is best to buy them in the markets.

Properties of Eilat stone

In addition to its unusual colors, magical properties have been attributed to the Eilat stone since ancient times. This gem is called the stone of wisdom. He helps everyone find wisdom within themselves, which will help them grow spiritually and become a whole person. For everyone who loves and reveres the practice of yoga, such a gem will become an indispensable assistant.

Eilat stone promotes the development of wisdom and helps in meditative practices

Often used in meditation exercises. It is believed that in the process of deep meditation, a person manages to connect ordinary consciousness with superconsciousness, and the Eilat stone is an assistant during practice and a guide on the path to harmony. It has a positive effect on the parietal chakra, thereby opening the spiritual path to higher powers. In ancient times, it was believed that the gem had magical properties, but is this true? The gem helps to accumulate negative energy, miraculously transforming it into positive energy. Therefore, for people prone to depression and subject to frequent mood swings, such a stone will help balance the energy within themselves. As for the connection of the stone with the signs of the Zodiac, in gemology there is a separate section on this topic. Each stone has a specific superpower that can bring good luck, enhance positive qualities and weaken negative traits.

An amulet with an Eilat stone is not suitable for everyone

The Eilat stone is not for everyone. This amulet is ideal for Sagittarius and Taurus, namely, the fair sex. The amulet will enhance feminine energy, add softness, femininity, and help in finding a soul mate. For the rest of the zodiac signs, the sage stone will help develop intuition, clear their gaze and give clarity of understanding. A talisman with an Eilat gem is an excellent gift for a small child. The amulet will help drive away fears and negative emotions from the children's room.

Games

In Israel you can buy play sets that will appeal to both adults and children.

Matkot

If you choose a beach holiday in Israel, you will probably see people playing matkot more than once. This popular national Israeli beach game is similar to table tennis. It requires two wooden rackets and a rubber ball. Please note that the balls come with markings of different colors, which indicate the degree of their “jumping” (yellow - weak, white and green - medium, red and blue - strong).

A matkot game set is a traditional souvenir from Israel. If you don’t know what to bring for your children, or you yourself are fond of outdoor sports games, be sure to buy such a set. It will cost you about 20-25 shekels. They are cheapest in supermarkets.

In Israel you will see very beautiful souvenir sets for playing chess or backgammon. The figurines are made of tortoiseshell, marble or clay. This is a great gift from Israel for lovers of intellectual games. Such sets give off the national flavor of this country and look very beautiful. You can buy these games in souvenir shops and at the market.

Food and drink

Israeli cuisine is very interesting. Of course, you won’t be able to bring the national dishes of this country with you, but you can still take some traditional products with you. We advise you to buy spicy oriental spices in Israel (cardamom, nutmeg, fennel, etc.), pistachios, Brazil nuts (cheaper than in Russia) and something else.

Coffee with cardamom

Israeli traditional coffee has a spicy, refined taste. It owes its interesting taste to cardamom. This spice is not for everyone, but this coffee is still very popular. If you tried it in a hotel or in a cafe and liked it, bring it from Israel for yourself and your loved ones.

Cardamom coffee can be identified by its green box. There is always a cardamom leaf on it. It costs the same as other coffee in Israel - about 50-60 shekels per package. It is more profitable to buy it in supermarkets or markets.

A good gift from Israel for a coffee lover could be a set of coffee with cardamom and cezve (Turk) - such souvenirs are sold in specialized shops and tourist shops, as well as in markets.

Wine

Israeli wine is not so easy to find in Russia, so it makes sense to bring it home as a gift for yourself and loved ones. Wine from the sacred land is astringent - it is not like the usual European wines.

The following drinks are worth paying attention to:

  • King David's wine (considered the national alcoholic drink, bottle prices start from 50-60 shekels);
  • rimon - pomegranate wine (Israeli wine made from pomegranate fruits is tart and sweet - it is very popular in eastern countries, prices per bottle start from 100-110 shekels);
  • currant wine (sweet fruity wine, tart; price per bottle will be approximately 60-70 shekels).

Here you can taste and buy wine at reasonable prices. You can also purchase wines in specialized departments, but here the prices will be higher.

Hummus

Most likely, you will try hummus in a cafe or hotel restaurant in Israel. This is a traditional Israeli product. Hummus is chickpea puree with olive oil and spices. Often lemon juice and sesame paste are also added to it. The product can be consumed as an independent dish, but most often it is spread on sandwiches or eaten with fresh vegetables.

Hummus is sold in plastic containers under vacuum film. It has a short shelf life, so you shouldn’t buy it in advance - only on the eve of departure. In Israel, hummus costs about 10-12 shekels per 500 grams. Of course, it is also sold in Russia, but real Israeli hummus is tastier (if you believe gourmet reviews) and cheaper.

Medicine stone

The ancient Israeli gem also has healing properties. Doctors have used it for a long time to treat many ailments. First of all, it helps relieve fatigue, resist stressful situations and eliminate depression.

Raw Israeli gem will help heal ailments

Untreated stone helps better in treatment. It naturally has more powerful healing properties than a gem that has been processed into jewelry.
