Today I want to tell and show how one custom pair of earrings was created. I was repeatedly asked to make a photo report, so to speak, from the battle front, but the problem was that I was so carried away that I forgot to take photographs, so every time the story did not work out. But I had to pull myself together, and here is my little story of how THIS happens))) I want to warn all readers in advance, this is not a master class, but just a photo recording of the process, for fun)) There are a lot of letters in this photo report, sorry ))
So, there is an order to make a pair of earrings with cabochons. The shape of the earrings must be original. First, I draw an approximate sketch (I don’t like to draw it completely on paper - it’s often easier for me to come up with ideas directly on the material). This photo shows a sketch to scale, cabochons for work and a piece of silver for rolling out.
In order to prepare silver for work, it needs to be annealed: the metal will become soft and flexible, it will be easy to work with, annealing also affects the quality of the product - for example, tensile cracks will not appear on the silver. Just in case, I’ll warn impressionable readers - my studio is a creative mess, in which I feel like a fish out of water. As soon as I clean up and make things beautiful, all the tools and inspiration disappear, so don’t be afraid, clutter = creativity)))
I anneal silver with a large torch, it runs on propane and air. There is another burner, for delicate work - it is gasoline, small and generally childish compared to this rocket.
After the silver is annealed and cooled, I slowly roll it out on a roller. This is a great way to pump up tender female biceps and warm up in a cool workshop. Rolling on rollers is a long task, because... Silver must be constantly annealed so that it remains pliable and stretches without damage. Therefore, I try to roll out different strips and sheets in reserve, so as not to waste precious time on this each time.
So, I rolled out a piece of silver into a sheet like this.
I mark the outlines of the cabochon and the outlines of my future earrings on the silver. I do this with a felt-tip pen for discs, it’s very convenient)
Now we take a jigsaw and.. “Saw, Shura, saw!”)) I constantly use the jigsaw against a positive New Year’s orange candle (you’ll see it again) - for better glide, the files last longer this way
This is what we got after artistic cutting. Now you need to process all the burrs, smooth out the contour, make more “waviness” somewhere, in general, modify it with a file, as in the old joke.
I will use completely different files for this, the main thing is that it is convenient))
Now, before I forget and get carried away completely, I need to put my stamp on it. To do this, I anneal the silver again and use these dies, a heavy hammer and an anvil.
I do the same with the second blank and now they lie in front of me, ready for further tests))
Now you need to make a cast (frame) that will hold the glass cabochon. I already have a strip of ready-rolled silver that I simply cut to the length and width I need.
To understand the exact length needed for the cabochon setting, I first twist it with round nose pliers, then squeeze the silver strip around it in every possible way, and measure the length.
I join the ends of the strip and prepare them for soldering - I clean them, trim them if necessary.
Now soldering. In the foreground you can see my soldering gasoline torch, in the background there is a jar of yellow - this is flux - it is needed when soldering to prevent the oxidation of silver and facilitate the soldering process. On the letkal (such a rotating stand) there is a prepared strip of silver and pieces of solder.
I soldered the strip into a ring and now I return the ring to its round shape using a wooden hammer and a ring bolt.
The cast is almost ready. You need to connect it to the “bottom”. I signed the detail so as not to get confused. Since the glass cabochons are different (at least by a tenth of a millimeter, they are different), I need each of them to clearly correspond to its details.
I clean both parts so that they are in maximum contact with each other and nothing interferes with soldering.
Soldering again. The parts to be soldered are again in flux, with solder around.
This is how flux turns white when heated.
On the left is an already soldered part (not yet bleached), on the right is its double. I want to make symmetrical earrings so that the curves of the silver look like a mirror image. In my opinion, this looks more interesting than when both earrings “look” in the same direction. Therefore, now I need to accurately position the cast on the silver “blot” symmetrically relative to the finished part and solder.
Now we need to work on the wires. I have already drawn wire with a cross section of 1.2 mm. But I like 1.1 better - it fits into the ear easier. So I'll need to stretch it out a little bit.
I take the treasured orange candle and go with the wire to the windowsill - this is where my dies live - this is a board with holes of different diameters through which the wire is pulled. Again, a candle is needed for better gliding. And spinnerets are another best friend of biceps))
You need to pull out quite a bit, so this stage of work was completed quickly today.
I will clean the wire a little so that I can solder it to the “blots” and the contact of the parts will be greater.
Now I need to solder parts that are at different heights. I use these granules for soldering, into which you can very easily compact what is being soldered and fix it with these granules.
I soldered everything and put both blanks to “rest” in bleach - in citric acid. This is done in order to clean the silver from flux residues and other unnecessary substances)) You can rest a little, drink some tea))
While I was drinking tea, they brought me a parcel from Canada, with all sorts of jewelry bells and whistles!
I come to the workshop, and here everything is so clean and white!))
According to the plan, the caste should, as it were, repeat the bending shape of the earrings, and also be wavy. I'm working again with files and needle files.
Just so that it comes to life and gets “excited”!
The soldering and sawing are done)) You can insert cabochons. To make it easier to crimp the castes, I warm up the silver blanks, gently.
I’m slowly squeezing the caste from all sides with a crusher. I forgot to “fix” this part of the work again, so here’s a photo of the finished, crimped cabochons.
Using different sandpapers and rubber bands (an elastic band and a rubber band, by the way, are in the background) I gradually add smoothness and shine to the silver earrings. You can do this endlessly, gradually coming to the “mirror”.
At the finish line, you need to polish the earrings first on a machine, then more finely with a drill.
I polish with rubber gloves. This is not very convenient, but my hands don’t look so scary after polishing. Otherwise you polish the silver, and then for several days you walk around with blackened fingers, like a dirty person
The customer and I decided that it would be better if the earrings were blackened. This will give relief and volume to the silver. So I start blackening. I have this solution (the bottle impresses everyone with its pirate bones with a skull) - it’s some kind of analogue of sulfur liver, in general, a solution for blackening. I keep the earrings in it for several minutes.
The earrings turned black.
The black should only remain on the border between the cast and the flat surface, so I clean off the excess and at the same time polish it one more time.
There is just a little bit left: you need to bend the earrings and turn the blanks into earrings!)
