How to Wear Diamonds: 7 Rules of Modern Jewelry Etiquette

Rule #1: Ignore passport information

Diamonds can be worn by anyone today, regardless of age or Facebook status. Just one piece of advice: at 20+ you should start your own jewelry collection with jewelry with small stones, and at 35–40+ you can and should afford large diamonds.

Wearing.

You're probably about to show off your diamond, aren't you? Who wouldn't!

While you want to show off your diamond to the world, there are a few things you need to know. It is possible to lose the stone or cause damage to it if you are not careful.

1. Make sure the ring is your size. If it's a little loose, it might slip off your finger when you're washing your hands or throwing something to a friend.

There are special pads you can buy to create a tighter fit. You can also take your ring to a jeweler to have it resized.

2. Try not to get caught on anything. Depending on the cut of the diamond, as well as the prongs of the setting, the ring may snag on certain materials, such as sweaters or lace.

If you're already caught on something, don't pull too hard. Be careful if you don't want to bend the prong.

If you have bent a prong, take the piece to a jeweler immediately to have it repaired. Otherwise, you risk losing the diamond.

3. Avoid contamination. While it is possible to clean your diamond ring, it is best to avoid situations where it gets dirty.

Whether you're playing sports or gardening, remove your ring for safe storage. This ensures that the diamond does not become loose and the setting is not scratched.

Rule No. 2: choose diamonds not only in the evening, but also during the day

There is a popular joke on women’s online forums: “A socialite is asked: “Don’t you think it’s not customary to wear diamonds during the day?” And she answers with dignity: “When I didn’t have them, I said that too.” Laughingly, fewer and fewer of us are willing to agree that the only piece of jewelry with the king of precious stones that can be worn from dusk to dawn is an engagement and/or wedding ring.

In fact, the main criterion in this matter is a sense of proportion. If, when getting ready for work, you put on tiny studs, a ring with a diamond that doesn’t weigh even a carat, or a thin chain with a barely noticeable diamond pendant, you can hardly say that you sparkle like a Christmas tree and suffer from a lack of taste and tact. But in the evening you can walk out with watches encrusted with diamonds, massive earrings, a ring with a large stone, and, of course, a luxurious necklace.

Second hand diamond

Cut diamonds, like no other gem, have a trail of intrigue, crime, and blood. Only the “path” of exclusive copies is known. Why a ring or brooch appeared on the road and what is behind it is unknown. There may be several reasons:

  • thrown out in their hearts, under the influence of emotions;
  • the owner got into trouble, the stone absorbed the energy of the tragedy;
  • accidentally lost.

Having found a pebble, you should contact a psychic you trust. Perhaps he will discern the “aura” of the jewelry. If you are not sure, it is better to get rid of the jewelry. For example, take it to a pawn shop or consignment shop. For the same reason, you need to think carefully before buying such antique items.

A diamond passed down by inheritance is considered a powerful talisman. A pebble donated by relatives will not harm. It is safer to buy a new product.

Rule #3: Wear diamond rings on whatever fingers you want.

What kind of prohibitions did not exist before! For example, it was considered rude to wear a diamond ring on your left hand unless it was an engagement or wedding piece. Also, a taboo was imposed on the middle fingers of both hands: for the same reasons of good taste (due to the association with an indecent gesture?) they could not be decorated with rings. Nowadays, these rules of jewelry etiquette are outdated, and even Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, sometimes wears a classic ring design on her middle finger.

The magical properties of diamond

The name "diamond" comes from the Greek "adamas", which means "indestructible". A natural diamond imparts similar properties to its owner. They say about the following influence of the stone on the person wearing it:

  • gives the ability to make complex decisions;
  • makes character strong;
  • increases the ability to influence others;
  • helps in business;
  • promotes financial well-being;
  • increases determination.

It should be noted that diamonds are not only girls’ friends! First of all, they are called the stones of warriors, people with a strong character, fighters by nature, which is why diamonds often become companions of famous businessmen, athletes, and politicians. For men, they can decorate watches, rings, cufflinks, tie clips, and even men's stud earrings. Looking at the chic gold cufflinks - a black square of enamel with a shiny border - it’s hard not to feel respect for their owner. On the one hand, diamonds emphasize a person’s status, on the other, they affirm him in him.

Rule #4: Mix metals and stones

The old rule prohibited mixing different shades of metals in one look - yellow or rose gold with white gold, silver or platinum, as well as wearing semi-precious, semi-precious and synthetic stones together with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and natural pearls. Nowadays this unwritten law has been abolished, and you can combine jewelry and costume jewelry the way you like.

Manicure.

Your fingers and nails should look as stunning as the diamond to help showcase it better.

A French manicure with white tips will help highlight your fingers. You can combine any color diamond with this type of manicure.

If you want to put glitter on your nails, make sure it doesn't distract from the color of the stone.

For example, yellow nail polish will look great with a yellow diamond, but it can offset the shine of a white diamond, which should be avoided in any case.

Rule No. 5: combine different headsets

Ballroom etiquette assumed that the jewelry worn by the hostess or guest of the evening: tiara, bracelets, necklaces, rings, should be a single set. An exception was allowed only for bracelets. In the 2010s, fashion experiments by designers convinced us that from two sets of jewelry it is quite possible to get a third, and it will not necessarily look like something “from another opera.” And the trend of wearing mismatched earrings this season has completely ceased to be perceived as shocking.

How to choose an accessory

Jewelry stores offer many options for jewelry that make your eyes wide open. Products vary in price, shape, color, size, etc. To choose the most suitable model and not make a bad choice, you should follow some recommendations .

It is important to always remember that jewelry should only be purchased from trusted jewelry stores with a good reputation to avoid counterfeiting

It is also not recommended to purchase new items in other countries while on vacation, since if the diamond turns out to be fake, you will not be able to get your money back. The same applies to visiting fairs. Another sign of a good store is the issuance of certificates with information about the product upon purchase.

Types and carats

When familiarizing yourself with a product, always read the labels . They should contain information about the following indicators:

  • weight (carat), 1 carat = 2 grams;
  • color (color);
  • purity (clarity);
  • cut

According to the weight of the stone, diamonds are:

  • small (0.29 carats and less);
  • medium (0.3 – 0.99 carats);
  • large (1 carat or more).

If you need a budget option , then you should take a closer look at products with a small diamond weight. The greater the weight of the stone, the higher its price.

Choosing a color

The choice of color depends on the purpose for which you will wear it.

If this is an everyday option , then it is recommended to go with the universal white color. It goes with any clothes and doesn’t look too pretentious or flashy.

If you are planning to make a purchase for evening outings or festive events, then colored accessories are quite suitable.

The most spectacular shades are blue, wine, and pink.

Also, the product should be selected to match the outfit. If you are not ready to spend money on several decorations, then in this case you should also opt for the universal white color.

How to identify a genuine diamond yourself

The most reliable way to find out whether a stone is real is to have it examined by a specialist. But there are also a few simple tricks to do it yourself:

  1. The diamond should shimmer with rays of different tones of gray. To do this, it is worth examining it under different lighting, including natural lighting.
  2. The surface should not fog up if you blow on it.
  3. Ask the seller for a tag with basic information about the product. If they don’t give it to you, then the conclusions are obvious.

These rules will help you make a successful purchase that will delight you for many years.

Rule #6: Admire, but don't be curious

Questions about the price of the jewelry, the carat value of the stone and its authenticity are impolite. Seemingly innocent curiosity will give others a reason for jokes, and the owner of the jewelry will feel awkward because her answer may be perceived as boasting, or will begin to worry that her diamonds look like an imitation. If you so wish, you can share the details one-on-one with those closest to you.

Cleaning.

1. Pour some ammonia into warm water and add a drop of dishwashing liquid. Soak your diamond ring in the solution you have prepared and leave it there for 20-30 minutes. If your diamond has cracks, do not use ammonia as it may harm the stone.

2. Make sure you do not use products containing bleach as it can damage metals such as gold or platinum.

Even when you wear your jewelry, do not allow it to come into contact with chlorine, which can be harmful to your jewelry.

3. Use a soft toothbrush to remove dirt that has accumulated in the ring crevices. Clean the ring gently to avoid damaging its teeth.

4. Don't forget to clean the bottom of the diamond, a lot of dirt accumulates in the setting under the stone.

5. Rinse the ring with water and dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth.

6. Clean your diamond ring once a week or once every two weeks.

If you do this less often, the dirt that accumulates may harden and you will not be able to clean the ring by hand. You may have to clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner instead.

And be aware that a lot of accumulated dirt can be detrimental to your ring surround, as the dirt creates additional friction, causing the metal to wear out quickly.

7. Gold bezels can be polished while sterling silver is wiped clean.

Either way, tread carefully around the stone and watch for any signs that it may be loose to avoid any kind of problems later.

Rule #7: Take care of family heirlooms

What should you do if you received an heirloom engagement or wedding ring from the man of your dreams, but you don’t really like the design? It is believed that the setting of a vintage piece of jewelry can be changed, but not the cut of the stone. On the other hand, there are so many brides, so many opinions. Thus, Jessica Simpson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Olivia Wilde, Kate Moss happily wear Art Deco engagement rings created in the 1920s. But Miley Cyrus complains that the antique yellow gold ring with white diamonds she received from Liam Hemsfort on her engagement day does not fit into her style and lifestyle. She prefers the style of anime and rock bands.

Diamond accessories in history

Until the 20th century, there were strict rules regarding diamonds. The girl received the first stone from the groom at the engagement - like a wedding ring, so cut diamonds were an attribute exclusively of married ladies.

It was considered bad form to wear diamond jewelry before six o'clock in the evening. During the day, ladies flaunted pearls, sapphires, and rubies. Young girls wear jewelry with semi-precious gems.

With the advent of the twentieth century, these rules became an anachronism. The brilliant Marilyn Monroe made diamonds the dream of millions of girls. Stones became available to both respectable ladies and self-sufficient young ladies. The marital status of the hostess does not matter, but some features are relevant.

What stone settings are used in paths?

Setting is a method of fixing a precious insert into a piece of jewelry. If in a classic engagement “princess” the pebble, as a rule, hovers above the rim, raised by prongs, then the path of wedding rings is most often secured in one of 2 ways:

  • Corners - small balls or columns made of the same metal as the bezel, as in this luxurious multi-layer ring. You can often see a small hole under a pebble in such a setting. It is needed so that the insert is illuminated from below and plays brighter.
  • In the channel - the stones are inserted into a recess in the bezel and pressed on top with a strip of metal, as in this model with 31 diamonds. The view of the insert is enlarged, which also allows you to see the play of gems.

Both types of setting are equally reliable, although it is a little more difficult to care for the rail (channel) setting - the inserts are difficult to completely clean at home; for real shine, sometimes you will have to entrust them to the care of a jeweler.

Sets from a box

Properly selected diamond sets will help make a good impression on others. You can try different variations: bracelet and ring, earrings and necklace. Combine ring, brooch and ear studs.

Finding earrings with diamonds is not difficult. The main thing is to adhere to several rules. If you are the happy owner of a “swan” neck, then allow yourself everything you have your eye on - both long pendants and small beads will suit you.

But, if you have a short neck and a full figure, it is better to avoid long pendants. Large, massive earrings will suit you. With a bracelet it's even easier. If the jewelry is segmented and decorated with identical diamonds, it is worn on the hand from below. Monolithic specimens, with crystals of different sizes, are raised higher.

How to wear diamond jewelry correctly

The younger the woman, the smaller the diamond should be (La Brune & La Blonde pendant)

The diamond bracelet should be worn on the right hand (Garavelli Jewelry)

  1. Young girls should pay attention to small diamonds, for example, the classic round cut, while mature women are recommended to wear large stones.
  2. A ring with a small diamond is appropriate to wear on the ring finger. Rings with an ornate design and large gems look great on the index finger. And on the middle finger it is better to wear rings with stones of moderate size. A universal form of stone can be “Marquise”.
  3. There should be only one ring with a diamond on your hand, even if its size is not large.
  4. According to the rules of diamond etiquette, the bracelet with the king of stones is worn only on the right hand. It is desirable that it does not dangle and fits as tightly as possible to the skin.
  5. It is recommended to wear the necklace with a dress that has a neckline, and the pendant will look good on closed clothes.
  6. Today it is fashionable to wear brooches. True, diamond jewelry is under no circumstances impaled on outerwear. This is considered a sign of bad taste (but only in the case of diamonds). This accessory should be worn on the left side of the chest, stepping back about 6 centimeters from the top button. The distance from the shoulder to the pinning point should not exceed 10-15 centimeters. A suit, dress or blouse should be of a discreet cut and neutral colors.

If you follow these simple rules, diamond jewelry will make your image irresistible and brilliant; the main thing is to choose one that suits your appearance and emphasizes its advantages! Moreover, this “king of precious stones” looks magnificent in any cut.

Nowadays, diamonds have become much more accessible than centuries ago. In those days, there was a whole set of rules for noble young ladies, when and what kind of diamond jewelry could be worn, and what kind of jewelry should be discarded. Let's take a closer look at the diamond etiquette of the past and compare it with modern trends.

What time of day can you wear diamonds?

Earlier . Rules for wearing diamonds began to emerge in the 17th century at the court of the French king Louis XIV. In those days, court life required compliance with the strictest regulations regarding the choice of clothing, behavior at court, and daily routine. Diamonds were considered evening stones - they were worn only after 5 pm.

Now. Neat stud earrings with miniature round-cut diamonds or a tiny diamond in a pendant on an invisible fishing line will harmoniously fit into any daytime look, even if it is a sporty style. In addition, no one has canceled the rules of wearing a wedding ring every day, which often contains diamonds.

Who can wear it

Earlier . The old attitudes are inexorable: diamond jewelry is the privilege of married ladies and women of mature age. Pearls were intended for young people.

Now . This rule has lost its relevance like no other. Fortunately, in our time, having a husband in a woman’s life is not a mandatory requirement. And age boundaries are so blurred that old-fashioned ageism has long been left in the past. Anyone can wear diamonds, regardless of their Facebook status or passport details.

The only fashion advice
: girls are still better off giving preference to smaller stones.
Large gems, and even in the daytime, are an inappropriate and irrelevant solution. On which hand can you wear diamond rings?

Earlier . Diamond jewelry can only be worn on the right hand. The exceptions were engagement rings. It was also forbidden to wear diamond rings on the middle finger.

Now . There are no rules about where, in what quantity and how many rings to put on one finger. Multi-tiered compositions of hand jewelry are breaking all records in popularity. A ring with a small diamond path combined with a minimalist ring without inserts is an example of an elegant solution for every day.

What do we combine diamonds with?

Earlier . Diamonds to diamonds, yellow gold to yellow gold. Clearly and without imagination. The larger the stone, the more expensive the fabric of the dress.

Now . There are no restrictions on mixing expensive diamonds with silver or ceramic jewelry. A T-shirt, jeans and a thin ring with a tiny stone are an appropriate choice.

Advice from stylists
: the main thing in such combinations is not the cost or size of the stones, the main thing is to choose the right jewelry in the same style, color scheme, and of course, coordinate all this with the location.
The beach, the gym and the diamond necklace may seem like a strange story. Living in a world with complete freedom of expression - these are the rules of our reality. You are the true mistress of life, and you decide which jewelry to choose and where to wear it. Enjoy!

Do you follow diamond etiquette?

How did jewelry making appear in St. Petersburg? Why are there so few interesting new products all over the world now? When should you not wear diamonds? The head of the art history department of St. Petersburg State University of Culture, Candidate of Art History and Associate Professor Galina Nikolaevna Gabriel told the Morning of St. Petersburg correspondent about this and much more.

Jewelry capital

The beginning of the jewelry business in St. Petersburg can be considered the founding of our city and the time when Peter moved the armory here from Moscow and invited foreign specialists. At that time, Russian craftsmen, although they were wonderful, did not know how to do many European things, such as diamond cutting. And since a decree was introduced on wearing secular European clothing, jewelry of a different type was needed.

Peter founded the so-called diamond mill, where they began to cut diamonds. At first it could not be called an industry: there were separate guilds and workshops, mostly foreign. But Russian masters also appeared quickly enough. A real interest in jewelry developed already in the era of the empresses: large Russian enterprises began to form, St. Petersburg became the capital of jewelry art.

The revolution, unfortunately, destroyed this. The best jewelers left St. Petersburg or went to prison. But the most terrible thing was the decree banning private craftsmen from working with precious stones and metals. During the NEP, of course, the workshops sprang up again, like mushrooms after rain, but were soon “slammed down” again. Therefore, we can say that all the most magnificent masters remained before the revolution. If we take post-war St. Petersburg, there were small workshops, state-owned and underground.

Then, when people began to gradually have money, the question arose - where to invest it? The small jewelry factories that existed then united and began to build huge enterprises, for example, the St. Petersburg “Russian Gems”.

Young artists came, and the beginning of the 60s can be called a wonderful period - truly amazing things were created. But they were not put into mass production, but rather terrifying, heavy rings were produced, with a lot of gold and, most often, artificial stones. People didn’t just buy them, but stood outside the shops at night with fires and torches, and in the morning they burst into the store and swept everything away. Nobody looked at the size, quality, design. And there was no special taste - where could it come from when there was no jewelry art as such?! Therefore, there was no point in introducing any unique designs.

Artists, dissatisfied with the fact that they could not put their products into production, created original products. Such things were not sold in regular stores, but were exhibited, for example, in the Artist’s Shop. And it was a time of absolute paradoxes: the jeweler did not have the right to work with gold or precious stones. And the seller could tell you in confidence: “This brooch is made not of cupronickel, but of silver.” That's why we bought it. Now it’s the other way around - they’ll write that it’s gold, but in reality it’s not.

Survival of the fittest

What today? There are practically no state jewelry productions; everything is privatized. There is a huge layer of more or less large private enterprises, small workshops, artists who have the right to work with absolutely any metals. Now there is huge competition, a large number of exhibitions. Competition also comes from enterprises with a flow of cheap products from Turkey, Italy and other countries. It is difficult to compete with this because we do not have a very flexible tax system.

Prospects? Complex. As jewelry business experts themselves believe, only the strongest will survive. Maybe they will survive by design. It is difficult to find cheap products offered by chain stores.

The crisis has affected the jewelry business. Now the situation is gradually improving. And largely due to the East. Do you know who is an active buyer of expensive jewelry and watches today? Rich Chinese. And why? In China, this is subject to a colossal tax. That's why they buy Swiss watches in Europe. If people want to really invest, then they should not buy cheap gold with an artificial stone from an incomprehensible store - such a thing cannot be sold later, it will not increase in price. If a person buys products from Cartier, he understands that Cartier will never become cheaper. These are companies that have 200-300 years behind them. They were called the kings of jewelers and you know you are buying a real stone from them. But we also have more and more companies that work with excellent designs and good materials.

Emphasize individuality

We don't have a big culture of wearing jewelry. A person may have good taste, and now there is an opportunity to go not to the market and buy a shiny blouse, but to go to Zara and buy clothes of normal design and quality. And the decorations haven’t come to that yet. Therefore, most often they limit themselves to very simple, uninteresting products. There is little original. And this is not just happening now. Take the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, when Lalique began making his things. It's a classic now. And then it was worn by bohemians, extraordinary individuals. The general public wore diamonds. Nowadays, jewelry provides an opportunity to highlight your individuality. Because we have all been leveled by these online clothes and do not understand that we can emphasize our uniqueness with unusual accessories.

Many adult women, by the way, are now often not satisfied with what they can buy in stores like “585”. In my opinion, St. Petersburg lacks designer jewelry salons. They opened periodically, but were not profitable. What to do in this case? Go to exhibitions, meet new people, look for new names. Whoever wants finds it.

For men and women

According to my observations, the most relevant accessory for men is a watch. And I think that's how it will be. Nowadays, a man with taste and money will not wear a diamond-studded watch. Cufflinks are also generally not worn anymore. Nowadays you rarely see a ring on a man, except for an engagement ring. Gone, fortunately, are those crazy gold chains with crosses. Piercing is becoming more and more popular, but this is already a youth thing. Of course, the set of jewelry for men has become smaller. Once upon a time there was a watch chain and beautiful buttons. Bracelets are now appearing, by the way, and they are quite interesting. One of the promising ways to develop jewelry is to combine it with gadgets. Accessories are increasingly saturated with jewelry. And this direction is also very noticeable.

There is currently no clearly defined trend in women's jewelry fashion. It’s no longer the case that you come to an exhibition and every year they show you something new that changes your understanding. If other interests appear, or there is a sensational film like “The Lord of the Rings”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, a lot of decorations with skeletons, etc. are created. Someone is developing their own, already recognizable direction. So, we can say that in terms of new ideas and breakthroughs, jewelry art is stagnating.

Jewelry for every day - there is no such thing. Everyone chooses according to their priorities. I wear my jewelry, someone will wear a gold ring with a small stone every day. But there are some established rules. For example, you can't wear diamonds every day. This has always been considered bad manners. If you arrive at a bank and an administrator wearing a diamond necklace comes out to you, this is wrong. Diamond is an evening stone; it works by candlelight, in special light.

Everything needs to be put on in the right place. You can even combine the gemstone with jewelry. But this requires taste, which not everyone has.

The diamond path on an engagement ring can be short (5 stones), medium, long (half eternity, covering the entire visible part of the bezel) or closed, with the stones arranged in a circle. The latter option is called eternity ring or “eternity ring”.

There are no irreplaceables

The secret is that the diamond is the best marketing project in the world. No matter how beautiful cubic zirconias are, no matter how brightly Swarovski crystals sparkle, diamonds remain diamonds. They cannot be replaced, eclipsed, forgotten, or any number of other verbs with the prefix “for.” And just the feeling of this noble stone of “blue blood” shimmering on your finger is already delicious.

When choosing diamonds, you always intuitively feel that you are doing the right thing - the charisma and energy of this amazing stone is so great.

Brooches: where to attach and what to combine with

Some women choose large brooches encrusted with scattering diamonds - this is wrong. A neat model will look much better, in the form of:

  • butterflies;
  • bug;
  • flower.

They need to be attached in the chest area on the left side, retreating about 15 cm from the shoulder line.

Large brooches look better near the goal line, but pinning it is a risky move. It is important to get the outfit right. It would be better if it was an elegant black dress. You can wear it with a suit, but this outfit looks too formal.

Monochromatic items look good with diamond brooches. Colorful fabrics should be avoided, as should sportswear, knits, lace, jackets and coats. If clothes have buttons (only dim ones), the accessory is attached at least five cm above them.

Diamond etiquette: relics or relevance

France has always been a trendsetter. It is not surprising that the rules for wearing diamonds originated there. The founder of etiquette, precious in every sense, was Louis XIV. Courtiers in the 17th century paid great attention to norms and rules.

Cards were even created with a list of the basics of behavior and palace toilet. One of the points said: if a girl is not married, she does not have the right to wear diamonds. The same regulations prohibited wearing stones until five o'clock in the evening.

In modern society, the ban on wearing diamonds by unmarried ladies has been lifted. But the rule that diamond is an “evening” stone remains unspoken. It is believed that crystal is an attribute of the holiday. And the more carats it contains, the more grandiose the event should be.

For example, in a theater or restaurant it is appropriate to wear jewelry with one or more small stones. For receptions with high-ranking officials, diamonds of several carats are suitable.

Subparagraph of the previous paragraph

The trend of the season is diamonds in a silver setting. We could go on and on about why this is so, but brevity is the sister of talent, and diamonds and silver are brothers forever. By the way, this trend is yet another proof that everything new is well-forgotten old. For example, in the 18th and 19th centuries, all Russian nobility considered silver a metal of the first category. Jewels of the House of Romanov and even imperial crowns, starting with the symbol of power of Catherine the Great herself, were cast in silver and encrusted with diamonds.

Summarizing all of the above, we conclude that small “everyday” diamonds are more classic than avant-garde. Of course, we reserve rich necklaces and chandelier earrings only for evening outings! But fluttering about on business in neat, laconic jewelry is easy, pleasant and beautiful.

We live in wonderful times! Tell me, who would have thought 10 years ago that high fashion would begin to promote body positivity, and jewelers would start promoting diamonds for every day?! And yet, miracles happen (because we believe in them).
