The devil's finger is the name given to the remains of shells (rostra) of belemnites - cephalopods that inhabited our planet in the Mesozoic era and became extinct at the same time as dinosaurs (approximately 65 million years ago). The researchers were able to find out that the appearance of the mollusks resembled modern squids and, most likely, were their ancestors.
A strong shell with a spear-like tip did not serve as a shell for belemnite. It grew inside his torso and replaced his skeleton. Extinct mollusks were predatory animals that inhabited the waters of the entire Earth. In addition to a powerful shell, they had an ink gland, horny jaws, fins and tentacles equipped with suction cups.
General characteristics of the stone
So what is a sea gift with the non-trivial name “devil's finger”?
The devil's finger (claw), or “thunder arrow,” is nothing more than a fossilized ancient mollusk belemnite (belemnitid) of a conical shape. The name is taken from the ancient Greek language and is translated as “dart”. According to scientists, these organisms became extinct approximately 65–70 million years ago.
Belemnitids are considered as “relatives” of our contemporaries – squids. During the Mesozoic period, their habitat was the ocean. The only direct descendant of belemnites that still exists today is Spirula. The description is very similar, but it’s still better to look at them in the photo.
A distinctive feature of the animal was that the shell (rostra) was located inside the body and was essentially the skeleton of the body; it did not perform a protective function, and only a small part of it protruded outward in the form of cartilage.
Belemnites - features of the deposit
There are more than 350 varieties of minerals. They are usually distinguished by the shape of their shell. In coastal areas, short and rather large formations predominate. Long, thin stones are found in the sea.
When found among sedimentary rocks, belemnites have a regular, geometric shape and sharp edges. If the stone is washed with water, it takes on a smooth, polished shape.
Amber colored stones are considered the most valuable. Cherry and black colored formations are also highly valued. Translucent belemnites are the most expensive and are not affected by river water.
Mysticism and history
Belemnites can be found anywhere in the world, and the color of the stones depends on the geographical location.
A distinctive feature of this mineral is its special shine, reminiscent of polished glass. Millions of years ago, belemnites lived mainly in warm waters, but today their remains can be found almost everywhere.
This distribution of the stone is confirmed by a large number of legends in the folklore of various nationalities and ethnic groups.
The Chinese associated this mineral with dragon teeth; the size and color of the stone are used to determine the aggressiveness and age of the mythological creature.
The Scandinavians called belemnites candles of gnomes because they were found in the mountains where magical creatures lived.
In European countries, this mineral was believed to represent fossilized lightning and was placed on roofs to ward off storms.
In India, belemnite was revered as a shrine - it was believed that it was a nipple on the udder of a cow that fed the gods.
In Russia it was believed that this stone was frozen lightning, so it was called a thunder arrow. By the way, the name “devil’s finger” also comes from Russia.
There have been many finds of devil's finger stones in Russia. Minerals ranging from 15 cm to 50 cm in length were found in this country. Belemnites mined in Australia are the best in parameters and appearance; they are often compared to opals.
Usage history
Stories from different peoples have survived to this day about how people found and used fossilized belemnite rostra. The devil's finger in Japan has become a symbol of warrior girls.
It was believed that the thunder arrow protected brave ladies who stood up to defend their ideals. The Egyptians used stone in everyday life, as its wear resistance was high. On the territory of modern Europe, there are many written sources confirming people’s long acquaintance with the mineral. One of the stories is especially surprising.
In a country where few people knew what a devil's finger was, one traveler brought beads made from unusual oblong minerals. People did not immediately realize that the jewelry was made of stone. The stranger decided to deceive the local people and become famous as a fearless hero.
The man talked about battles with terrible sea monsters that no one could defeat before. However, the lie was soon revealed, and the traveler was expelled from the state in disgrace. However, superstitions remained strong that thunder arrows were the teeth of terrible creatures living under water.
Devil's finger stone - legends and history
Interesting are the myths of different peoples that tell how fossilized belemnite was formed. Usually these are cut off or broken into pieces fingers of demonic power, all kinds of ghosts and mystical monsters.
It is also believed that these are the remains of arrows shot from the sky. According to one version, the main devil decided to take the earth into his own hands. For which he was immediately punished. He turned to stone, and the broken stone fingers not only scattered on the ground, but also fell into the water.
In the mythology of some European countries, belemnite is most often associated with thunderstorms. The German "lightning stone" was kept in rooms, and the Dutch placed it on the roof to protect their homes during thunderstorms.
In the past, when there was no talk of serums, and access to a doctor was often impossible, in some countries, when bitten by poisonous snakes, crushed belemnite powder was applied to the wound; it was believed that the devil's stone was the only antidote.
To this day it is believed that the fossil (more precisely, its sharp tip) can become a talisman. Some psychics believe that belemnite, glued to a wall, can significantly reduce negative (pathogenic) influences in an apartment or house.
Color variety
The color of fossils varies depending on admixtures. There are amber, brown, blue-gray and carbon-black designs. After polishing, they acquire a holographic shine. Jewelry with amber-like belemnites are considered the most attractive and most expensive.
- Rusty brownish tint. These samples contain iron, its amount rarely exceeding 4%. Sometimes the impurity spreads in stripes.
- Light gray shade of the devil's finger. The color is due to the increased chalk content. Typically, this chemical only colors the surface, so the inside of the devil's finger remains dark.
- Belemnite has a gray-blue hue. The stone contains hydrocarbons, which affect not only the color, but also the crystal structure of the stone.
- Metallic shine. This color is due to the different subtypes of carbon that make up belemnite.
- Light brown shade. Devil's finger stone of this color is usually influenced by the environment rather than impurities. It had been in wet soil for a long time.
- Amber shade. Such specimens are found underwater or near recently drained freshwater bodies of water.
Charcoal shade. This is the natural color of the fossilized rostrum of belemnites; Devil's fingers are often found where the sandy shores of freshwater basins are close to sediments.
What does it consist of?
If you conduct a thorough chemical analysis of the stone, you can find in it, if not all the elements of the periodic table, then most of them. Since belemnite is essentially a skeleton, its main component is calcium, and more specifically, calcium carbonate. In this regard, the mineral is quite fragile.
The devil's finger stone contains:
- magnesium;
- tin;
- flint;
- bromine;
- iron;
- manganese;
- gold;
- silver, etc.
It is for this reason that fossilized rostra are used in both traditional and alternative medicine. More often in non-traditional. Calcium stimulates the body's fight against the growth of cancer cells, activates a number of vital enzymes, and is involved in nerve conduction. With a deficiency of this macroelement, teeth crumble, and bones do not heal so quickly during fractures.
Phosphorus is an obligatory participant in metabolism, regulates the activity of the parathyroid glands and is one of the components of deoxyribonucleic and ribonucleic acids. Sodium is responsible for the transport and distribution of moisture in the human body. Without magnesium, stable heart function is impossible; it takes part in the creation of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, and normalizes blood pressure. Lack of iron will negatively affect the process of hematopoiesis.
In medicine, the fossil is used due to the fact that it contains a high concentration of aragonite (about 95%) - a substance with a pronounced antiseptic and wound-healing effect.
Since belemnite is absolutely non-toxic, adherents of lithotherapy (stone therapy) often use it. For therapy, belemnites are used in powder form.
It is not recommended to make it yourself, as the process is quite labor-intensive and requires special equipment.
Unique fossil composition
For a long time, crushed belemnite was used as a medicine not only in the west (for example, Finno-Ugric tribes), but also in the east (for example, in Ancient China).
The cephalopod lived in an ecologically clean aquatic environment, in which there were much fewer harmful substances than in our time. The fossil contains: bromine, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, nickel, magnesium, manganese, iron, silicon, zinc, copper, cobalt, vanadium (important in the prevention of diabetes, atherosclerosis), chromium (regulates blood sugar levels) , selenium (reduces the likelihood of cancer), tin, silver and even gold.
Belemnite powder really stops bleeding instantly, and wounds heal very quickly. The fact is that the rostra contains a lot of aragonite , a mineral that has unique healing qualities. Thus, all over the world they know about the special properties of Karlovy Vary water, which is largely due to its saturation with aragonite.
Belemnite, preserved in clay deposits, is considered the most valuable for medicinal purposes. You can also use the one found in the sand, but there is less “active substance” left in it. According to some healers, this fossil should not be exposed to extreme heat.
Types and colors
As already mentioned, belemnites were distributed throughout the globe and they lived at different depths. Because of this, their sizes and colors vary.
The most common size of the fossil found is from a few millimeters to 15–20 centimeters. From time to time, specimens up to 5 cm in size are encountered. Regardless of size, they are shaped like an arrowhead or a sharpened spear.
The color of the “devil’s finger” depends on the soil in which the petrification occurred. It can be yellow, brown, gray, red and jet black. The amber shade is considered the most valuable for jewelers.
Varieties
The natural diversity of fossils has been brought into order.
Types of belemnites are defined based on origin:
- Large short ones are found on the coast.
- Elongated, thin specimens are pulled from the sea.
- Instances of regular shapes with pointed edges are found among sedimentary rocks.
- A shape resembling smooth pebbles is a deposit washed by water.
Stone colors - gray, black, yellow sand, brown, cherry, amber, transparent. The last two varieties of belemnite are the most valued.
Mining locations
The most significant finds of belemnites occur in Australia. It is from there that jewelers take the material for their products. Jewelry made from these minerals is similar to opal jewelry.
In Russia, belemnites are mostly found in the Moscow region. Although, due to the fact that they lived almost everywhere, you can search for and find ancient mollusk rostra in your own garden.
Deposits and production
Belemnites are mined everywhere, in areas where Jurassic sediments come to the surface. The territory of Russia has large deposits of rostra of fossil mollusks, even the territory of the capital and the Moscow region is famous for such finds. True, specimens from this region are small - the rostra rarely reach 15 cm in length.

But the belemnites of the Volgograd region, which found refuge among the river chalk deposits, are distinguished by their large size and excellent quality. Australian finds are also known throughout the world - belemnites from this corner of the planet can easily be confused with high-quality opals.

"Devil's finger" in superstitions
Interesting are the myths of different peoples, which tell how fossilized belemnites appeared. Usually these are severed or broken into pieces fingers of demonic power, all kinds of spirits and mystical monsters. They are also considered to be the remains of arrows shot from the sky.
According to one version, the most important devil decided to take the land into his hands. For which he was immediately punished. It was turned into a rock, and the broken stone fingers not only scattered on the ground, but also fell into the water.
In the mythology of some European countries, belemnite is more often associated with thunderstorms. In Germany, the “thunder stone” was specially kept in rooms; in Holland it was placed on the roof so that the fossil would protect the house during a thunderstorm.
In the old days, when serums were not yet known, and it was most often not possible to see a doctor, in some countries, when bitten by poisonous snakes, a rostrum was applied to the wound or crushed belemnites were sprinkled on it. At the same time, they whispered a special conspiracy.
It is still believed that a fossil (more precisely, its sharp tip) can become a talisman. According to some psychics, with the help of belemnite attached to the wall, it is possible to significantly reduce the negative (pathogenic) impact in an apartment or house.
Not only a large one, but also a tiny pointed piece of the “devil’s finger” can be carried with you as a talisman
Belemnites - myths and legends
To begin with, I would like to note that each nation initially had different myths about the appearance of the “Thunder Arrows”.
At the same time, legends were most often formed that this mineral originated from severed pieces of phalanxes of demonic power, various monsters, and also spirits. Also, some people believed that belemnite occurred due to the fact that evil spirits lowered arrows from the sky. And the most frightening version of people was that once upon a time the most important devil decided to take the earth into his own hands, but it didn’t work out for him, since he was immediately turned into petrified rock, and his phalanges in the form of minerals scattered all over the ground and some even fell into the water.
- European countries Devil's finger in ancient times was considered a thunderstone. Their belief was that if you keep this mineral in the house, you can easily cause lightning.
- Also in some countries, healers used petrified belemnites to treat bites from poisonous snakes. It was believed that it was enough to apply this mineral to the wound, read the spell, and the illness would go away.
- Nowadays, it is believed that the sharp tip of this stone can become an excellent amulet that will help eliminate negative influences in your home.
- The Chinese associated belemnites with dragon teeth and believed that the larger the stone, the more aggressive the character was.
- The Scandinavians believed in gnomes and therefore believed that belemnites were the candles of these fabulous creatures.
- Germany associated this stone with lightning, and India with the teats of cows that feed the Almighty.
Russia believed that this mineral originated from frozen thunder arrows (by the way, that’s where the name came from). At the same time, I would like to note that most of the deposits were found in Russia.
Properties of the stone
The properties of belemnite as a talisman have long been known among the people. However, the chemical and physical characteristics of the stone appeared only at the end of the 19th century, when mineralogists learned about the unusual fossil from local residents.
Magical
The magical properties of belemnite are amazing, because they influence the personality of the owner, after which he can independently change his destiny. Depending on the character of the owner, the devil's stone grants him:
- Equilibrium. This will help you concentrate on really important tasks and not pay attention to unimportant matters.
- Self confidence. Believing in yourself will help you find the motivation deep down in your soul and put all your strength into achieving your goals.
- Harmony with the surrounding world. Gradually, a person becomes aware of the mechanisms of life in the world, which will help him find his place in society, meet the right people and improve his condition.
The unusually shaped fossil has sparked interest from the occult community. The magical properties of belemnite have been studied almost thoroughly.
Magic and astrology
In the old days, experienced magicians and sorcerers willingly used this stone because it has many properties. If you believe history, the devil's finger found its use as a talisman; it was laid out in the attic, hung from the roof in order to ward off evil spirits from the house.
What other characteristics does a mollusk shell have?
- Fills the owner with energy and vitality.
- Capable of neutralizing snake venom.
- It will help save the family from disagreements and conflicts.
The property of the stone to endow the owner with energy and strength has been known since ancient times. People wore rostras around their necks, believing that they absorbed fatigue and negativity like a sponge. Emotions will subside if you simply touch the shell of a mollusk, this will be quite enough to feel a surge of strength and calm.
The ability of the stone to neutralize snake venom has been known for quite some time; this property has not been confirmed by official medicine. But magicians believe in the abilities of the rostra.
To neutralize the poison, grind the shell into powder and pour the resulting medicine onto the damaged surface. Within a few minutes, the powder will absorb the poison and the person can be considered healthy.
The devil's finger is a powerful talisman that has positive energy. If the stone is in the house, then it absorbs negativity. Anger, anger and aggression will turn into mercy and kindness. Conflicts in the family will end, disputes and disagreements will disappear.
Necklace with devil's finger stone
Esotericists advise placing rostras near the door; they will not allow bad people who have bad thoughts into the house.
And in the old days they believed that stone would help protect a home not only from unkind people, but also from fires, thefts, and natural disasters. A rostrum can protect a home from a thunderstorm or hurricane.
When it comes to astrology, experts disagree; some argue that the clam shell is exclusively suitable for Leos. Others say that there are more zodiac signs on the list.
So, according to the horoscope, the devil's finger fits:
- Leos.
- Taurus.
- Libra.
- Virgos.
Leo's element is fire. Representatives of this zodiac sign are distinguished by their hot-tempered nature; they often show aggression and show dissatisfaction.
To cope with excess emotions and calm down a little, representatives of this zodiac sign should purchase a product inlaid with a damn stone.
Decoration will help you make informed and thoughtful decisions and not make mistakes in difficult situations. You can wear jewelry with a rostrum every day.
Taurus is the opposite of Leo. Representatives of this zodiac sign are even too calm, slow and not ready for active work. Taurus values his position in society, and his element is considered to be earth.
The stone will help representatives of this zodiac sign achieve success in business and affairs. It will strengthen Taurus’s material well-being and help him get rid of laziness, which prevents him from moving faster in the chosen direction.
As for Libra, they often suffer from indecision and doubt. The element of this zodiac sign is air, for this reason representatives often soar in the clouds. Plus, they constantly weigh their decisions and doubt themselves and others.
The shell of an ancient mollusk will dispel doubts and help cope with self-doubt. Libra will stop doubting and will be able to make decisions based on their opinion. In addition, representatives of this sign, under the influence of the stone, will change their attitude towards others.
Virgo's element is earth. Representatives of the sign are distinguished by their good disposition, often smiling and laughing. But Virgo is afraid of publicity; her uncertainty can go off scale. In fact, Virgo is plagued by a lot of doubts.
To get rid of worries, doubts and self-doubt, representatives of the sign should be given a devil's finger as a gift. Virgo also needs peace and balance; the rostra will help you find harmony and realize your potential.
If the jewelry was given as a gift, its properties will increase several times, so the stone will begin to act faster.
Esotericists also claim that belemnite favors everyone who was born in a thunderstorm. He especially protects these people and can become a powerful talisman for them.
Who is the stone suitable for?
Belemnite began to be used in modern folk medicine relatively recently, but despite this, the stone has found its admirers. It is purchased by those who want to increase their potential, improve well-being and improve energy vibrations.
The mineral as a talisman will reveal all its power if it is used by people born during the period of thunderstorm activity - from May to September.
Belemnite is suitable for those born between May and September
Healing
The devil's finger, the medicinal properties of which were known to our ancestors, was often used to treat pathological diseases. Even after a fatal diagnosis, many people found the strength to fight. Thanks to the help of the mineral, you can enhance the effect of medications and speed up the healing process.
Thunderbolt powder was often used in the Middle Ages to treat gastrointestinal problems. Also, using crushed mineral, ointments were often made to restore damaged areas of the skin, rejuvenate and relieve signs of fatigue.
In more ancient times, this drug was used to improve vision and restore the body after operations or serious illnesses. During large-scale epidemics, it was recommended to filter water using damn fingers. All these healing properties of the stone have been preserved in modern specimens.
Physical
Since belemnites were stored in different conditions, survived climate change, and the drying of the world's oceans, with the help of their appearance they can tell about life on Earth long before the appearance of people.
The peculiarity of the devil's finger is that each specimen differs from the other in shape, color and size. It is difficult to find two completely identical minerals; there will be differences in shade or natural defects between them.
Chemical
Belemnites are unusual minerals that cannot be clearly understood. The chemical properties of fossilized shells vary depending on the place of residence of the ancient mollusks, the characteristics of their habitat and diet.
Each mineral has an individual composition, crystal lattice and other characteristics.
Only general conclusions can be drawn from specimens analyzed by scientists over the last century. Mineralogists state that:
- the hardness of the devil's fingers ranges from 3.5 to 4 units on the Mohs scale;
- the matte surface of the stones is often covered with chalk powder, since a large number of belemnites are mined in the strata of this chemical element;
- a clear crystal lattice, which is disrupted as a result of the interaction of the stone with other minerals.
Weather and climate
Before climbing the Una-Koz ridge, it is very important to check the weather forecast in advance, since hiking in the mountains during the rainy season can not only disrupt the planned sightseeing, but also pose a threat to life.
The village of Dakhovskaya and its immediate area are characterized by cool summers, long dry autumns, little snow winters and early springs.
The average monthly temperature in July is +23…+24 °C. In the foothills it is +1…+2 °С less. The average temperature of the coldest month, January, ranges from -4 to -5 °C. But there are also significant frosts down to -25 °C. In spring, prolonged precipitation is common. The leader in the amount of precipitation is May. The driest month is February.

Application of stone
Probably the most ancient use of belemnites was their use as arrow and dart tips. Currently, in a number of countries, belemnitids are used as a universal remedy that increases immunity.
In China, for example, belemnite is used to treat diseases that cannot be cured by traditional methods, and the powder is also mixed into tea as an effective immunomodulatory agent. The effectiveness of the treatment is not advertised. Baltic healers use belemnite to save a person after being bitten by deadly poisonous snakes. The victim is sprinkled with powder on the bite site and special spells are read.
Traditional healers strongly recommend using medicinal solutions of belemnite powder with purified water on an empty stomach for several months. They promise a healing effect.
With the devil's finger, folk aesculapians promise to cure psoriasis and thrombophlebitis, furunculosis and eczema, varicose veins and trophic ulcers. What is there! Broken bones will also be healed! There are also recipes for fighting tuberculosis.
When the skin is damaged, belemnite is used in the form of lotions. Psoriasis, burns, ulcers and eczema are treated with healing powders, but ideally you need to take belemnite baths.
Washing with water and adding belemnite powder should help with acne and dermatitis. They say that the skin will become elastic, soft and silky. When deciding on such treatment, you should first consult a doctor.
In our country, belemnite does not officially have the status of a medicine. Thus, it would be incorrect to talk about contraindications.
If you listen to traditional healers, then the devil’s stone is not advisable to use for the treatment of cancer patients, hypertensive patients, those suffering from thrombophlebitis and kidney stones.
It should also not be used by patients with gastritis and stomach ulcers, or by pregnant women. The effectiveness of the “finger” as a medicine is still in question, since there is no scientific evidence of its effectiveness.
If a person has been suffering from some skin ailments for quite a long time, has tried all the methods prescribed and recommended by doctors, but the effect remains zero, it makes sense to try belemnite in powder form. It won't get worse, but a cure may happen.
Due to the high content of microelements in belemnitidae, it is widely used in cosmetology, using it in crushed form for rinsing hair, adding it to compresses and face masks, and when taking medicinal baths. The powder is used to enrich creams, shampoos, essential oils and other cosmetic products.
It seems more understandable to use belemnite rostra (after grinding them) as a food additive to livestock feed. Regular consumption improves the immunity of pets, strengthens bone tissue and muscles, and increases productivity.
The devil's finger often becomes a material for the production of talismans, amulets, jewelry and other ethnic fetishes.
Scope of application in medicine
Numerous studies have shown that fossilized prehistoric mollusks have an extremely rich composition of trace elements. These ingredients are widely used in the cosmetics industry to create skin care and rejuvenation products.
Crushed shellfish are added to baths, masks, compresses, and belemnites powders are also used in shampoos and hair rinses.
Currently, belemnites in powder form are added to livestock feed - it is noted that regular consumption of belemnites increases their immunity, strengthens bones and muscles and increases performance.
These minerals are valued in the collections of antique lovers; belemnites are also used to create ethnic talismans and amulets; mollusks in which blood vessels are clearly visible are especially valued - such devil's fingers are found in large numbers in the Altai mountains.
Belemnites in the interior
Large belemnites are considered an excellent decorative element that can become a stylish accent in the interior of a living room or fireplace room.
Belemnite shells can be placed in an aquarium, on a coffee table or bookshelf. Some craftsmen even create special collectible pieces on decorative stone stands decorated with chains and colored lights.
Belemnite in cosmetology
In cosmetology, the devil's stone is used to improve skin health:
- It cleanses the skin at deeper levels, saturates it with microelements, and improves turgor.
- Activates metabolism. The skin becomes clean, elastic, looks young and radiant.
- Treatment with belemnites is effective for swelling and inflammation of the skin.
Contraindications
Belemnite preparations are effective, but not universal. Use is prohibited or requires caution in the following cases:
- pregnancy;
- breast-feeding
- thrombophlebitis in acute form;
- urolithiasis or the risk of its occurrence;
- hypertension.
If there are any contraindications, you should consult your therapist or doctor before using creams, ointments, or compresses with belemnites
Application of belemnites in the modern world
The mineral is saturated with microelements that do not have harmful chemical impurities, which is why it is loved in the cosmetology industry. Most often, this component can be seen in modern anti-aging products. In addition, mineral particles are added to various masks, shampoos and hair rinses.
On store shelves you can find amulets and pendants made from ancient minerals. At the same time, jewelers fell in love with this stone because it is unique and has different color shades.
Large stones can increasingly be found as a decorative element in the living room or in the fireplace room. This mineral is also used to make sinks, coffee tables and bookshelves. Special craftsmen make them with lighting and other decorative elements.
Belemnite is also used in the agricultural industry; the stone is ground into flour and added to animal feed as a mineral supplement.
Which zodiac sign is the devil's stone suitable as a talisman?
The devil's finger suits many people. However, it affects the following signs to a greater extent:
- It helps Aquarius to rethink their past mistakes. Thanks to this, a person can focus on the future.
- The gem makes Gemini more patient. This will help you find friends and create long-lasting relationships.
- The mineral will help Aries move up the career ladder. This will have a beneficial effect on a person's status.
Devil's finger is a unique mineral that helps change a person's destiny. In addition, the gem has medicinal properties and has a decorative appearance.
Suitable by zodiac sign and name
Astrologers claim that amulets made from the devil's finger in the form of necklaces, pendants, and pendants can be used by all people.
The mineral brings good luck to those who wear it constantly. The stone is most favorable to individuals born under the signs of Cancer and Leo; the positive influence of belemnite is felt by Virgos, people born in a thunderstorm or during the harvest season.
For Aquarius, fossilized mollusk shells allow them to sort out their mistakes, avoid mistakes in the future, and concentrate on achieving their goals.
For Aries representatives, an amulet made from the devil's finger promises rapid advancement up the career ladder, which leads to increased self-esteem and high status.
For Gemini, an amulet made of stone restores calm, helps to express oneself in society, and build relationships with other people.
Belemnite talismans protect owners from failures and tell them how to find the right solution when it is difficult to choose. Bracelets with elongated minerals develop intuition in the owner and instill confidence.
Products made from oblong stone look unusual and seem whimsical. Jewelry made from belemnite shells is fragile and requires protection from moisture and solar radiation.
Devil's finger is not a rare mineral or gem. Rostres of extinct mollusks are scattered across all continents. As an amulet, the stone does not harm anyone and serves as a strong amulet for representatives of several zodiac signs.
The healing properties of the mineral have long been used by the peoples of the East and West to treat diseases, heal wounds and burns; the stone is rarely used in traditional medicine.
Interesting sites along the way
On the slopes of Una-Koz there are several beautiful locations that can be viewed while descending or ascending the Devil’s Finger rock from the side of the old bridge.
Dakhovskaya Cave . Coordinates: 44.239167, 40.219167. Corridor-type karst formation. The entrance to it is narrow (height 60–70 cm), then the cavity expands, and the ceiling height reaches 3 m. The total length of the cave is about 50 m. Archaeologists discovered in it the site of an ancient man of the Early Paleolithic era. To explore this natural monument you will need a flashlight.

Dusty Cave . Coordinates: 44.239167, 40.233333. Located half a kilometer from the Devil's Finger. From the path you can clearly see the triangular entrance among the stone rubble. Its length is about 30 m; according to some reports, narrow openings go even further into the rock. The inside is very dry and dusty, which is why the cave got its name.
Grotto Ring . It is located directly under the Devil's Finger rock. A short climb over shallow loose rock leads to a tall arched limestone formation. Inside there is a semicircular hall, the base of which is covered with intricately twisted tree roots. The walls of the hall narrow upward into a cone and end with a wide gap through which the sky and vegetation of the upper tiers are visible.
The man-made landmark from which travelers begin their ascent or where travelers return is the old Dakhovsky (Stone) Bridge . This architectural monument is over 100 years old and is still in good condition. It is believed that during its construction, the Cossacks added egg white to the solution. Tourists really like to take pictures against the backdrop of its arched spans that bend over the Dakh River.

Belemnite jewelry
Products with fossils are rare in stores. Belemnitids are used by folk craftsmen and creative jewelers. Devil's fingers are suitable for jewelry in ethnic style. They make beads, pendants, earrings, and bracelets. Craftsmen try to emphasize the features of the rostrum by polishing and varnishing. The frame is selected wooden or metal.
How to wear
Small stones are suitable for daytime wear, while large stones go well with evening wear. The products look good with clothes in ethno, folk, boho, country, safari, marine and eco styles. Devil's fingers are not compatible with gemstones.
How to properly care for belemnite
Belemnite is fragile, so you need to look after it quite carefully. It is best to store products in a special box, the inside of which will be covered with velvet or plush.
If, due to carelessness, chips appear on the jewelry, the stone must be taken to a craftsman; you won’t be able to polish the damn finger yourself; the mineral may crumble.
Belemnite - how to distinguish a fake
Quite common types of minerals are inexpensive and therefore there is no point in counterfeiting them. But there are individual copies that reach a price of $1000. Of course, this price tag cannot but interest unscrupulous craftsmen.
That is why you can increasingly find fakes on the market. Moreover, it may be of good quality, but still unnatural. By the way, it is translucent belemnites that are most often counterfeited, since they are most valued.
A specialist can easily distinguish a fake from real belemnite, since the structural features of natural stone are unique and cannot be imitated. At the same time, in order to repeat the outlines of blood vessels, you need to have incredible talent, which is not given to everyone.
Difference from fake and combination with other stones
It is impossible to make an artificial mineral. However, there are low-quality fakes on the market.
To distinguish a natural gem, you should carefully examine it. There must be blood vessels on the surface, which cannot be applied synthetically.
You can also view quality certificates that confirm authenticity.
Belemnite belongs to the fire element, so it can be safely combined with ruby. When creating jewelry, the gem is combined with translucent or opaque stones that belong to the earth element. These include jade, malachite, jasper. Combinations with agate, onyx, and chalcedony are also possible.

Based on the prints they found, paleontologists compiled an accurate “portrait” of the ancient mollusk - a head, a body with ten tentacles equipped with suction cups. The spitting image of a modern squid.
With one significant exception - the presence of an internal shell, which evolved descendants got rid of. Belemnite is one of the three parts of this shell - the rostrum, which helped the mollusk maintain balance when moving.
The sizes of the rostra range from 10 to 42 cm in length. In addition to the rostrum, the shell consisted of a phragmocone and a proostracum. The first was air chambers filled with water or air, depending on whether the mollusk wanted to dive or surface. The second served as a kind of shield for the rostra.
According to ancient Baltic beliefs, the “devil's finger” is endowed with the ability to neutralize snake venom. Once upon a time, healers used a powdered shell, pouring the medicine onto the bite site. At the same time, the healer read prayers, turning to the old gods.
Nature
The foot of the ridge is covered with broad-leaved forest (oak, ash, hornbeam). The rock mass itself is dotted with caves, grottoes and intricate weathering figures with frozen fossils.
The vegetation delights tourists with its diversity and rich aromas: wild apple, cherry, cherry plum, pear, dogwood, barberry, grapes, euonymus, hawthorn. Colchian ivy and juniper cling to the rock walls. In the clearings and clearings there is a Caucasian peony, leafless iris, poultry plant, and plantarium.
The fauna of the ridge is no less interesting and diverse, but its representatives try to stay away from humans. Only nimble rock lizards are found everywhere, which have chosen the limestone slopes, as well as snakes and grass snakes.
