Welcome to WoWMooN's guide to the gems and stones available in Burning Crusade Classic. In this guide, we'll look at all the gems that players can obtain from Jewelry Crafting, Heroic Dungeons, Merchants, and other sources.
In Burning Crusade Classic, most equipment will have 1-3 sockets and a socket bonus that gives additional stats. To receive the socket bonus, the colors of the sockets must be met. Sockets can only be red, blue, or yellow, although there are single-color and multi-color gems that players can use to obtain a socket bonus. For example, if a piece of equipment has one red socket, players can insert a bold living ruby,
an inscribed noble topaz or a Sovereign Eye of Night to fulfill the sockets bonus as each of these stones matches a Red socket. However, if the socket bonus on a piece of equipment is not attractive, any socket can be occupied by a gem of any color (except for meta gems and meta gem sockets).
Gemstones come in a variety of colors - red, blue, yellow, orange, purple, green and prismatic. While single-color gems will only match their respective socket colors, multi-color gems will match two socket colors. For example, the Indestructible Seaspray Emerald matches a blue or yellow socket.
Similar to socket bonuses, meta gems will have certain requirements before their bonuses become active, many of which vary in difficulty. For example, Chaotic Skyfire Diamond requires a minimum of 2 blue gems to be socketed into the player's equipment, whereas Bracing Earthstorm Diamond requires a deliberate balance of more red gems than blue gems. The benefit of using different colored gems to fulfill the meta gem requirements is that they will count as both colors. For example, veiled precious topaz is considered both a red and yellow gemstone. As mentioned earlier, Meta Gems can only be inserted into Meta Gems sockets.
Characteristics of the stone
The chemical composition of star ruby is aluminum trioxide in crystalline form. The admixture of chromium and iron provides rich shades - from soft pink to lilac. The optical effect in the form of luminous rays, characteristic of this variety of ruby, occurs due to inclusions of rutile.
When a stream of light hits the surface of a star ruby, the effect of asterism appears - a pattern in the form of a shining star with 6, 12 and 24 rays. The maximum effect is manifested after processing the stone with a cabochon.
Star ruby has a high hardness index (9 units on the Mohs scale). Unlike other varieties of ruby, it is opaque and has a glassy luster.
Varieties
Noble opal
Jewelers value, first of all, noble, or jewelry, opals - almost all over the world such stones are usually classified as precious. They are distinguished by their bright pure color, richness of shades and iridescent tints. This feature is characteristic of translucent stones, which are quite rare. It is the precious opals that are usually selected to become part of a piece of jewelry.

Types and colors
Opal can come in a wide variety of colors, including: black, white, blue, purple (light and dark), green, red, yellow. Moreover, the play of color may not be continuous, but dotted or mosaic. For this reason, there are a huge number of varieties of opal. The shine of the stone can also be different, for example, glass or wax.
Common opal is a term that covers many varieties of opaque or glassy opals with a waxy luster. These stones come in a variety of colors and are rarely cut.

Golden Opal - Just as in the previous case, the term includes different types of opal with a bright golden glow. Photo: Aisha Brown
Asterism in opals is an extremely rare and at the same time beautiful effect, which is caused by the imperfection of silicate spheres in individual specimens. This distinguishes the asterism of opals from the asterism of, for example, star sapphires and rubies, in which it is caused by inclusions.
Opal pattern
In addition to their unusual colors, opals also differ in their patterns: on the surface of the stone, color spots can be located differently and their patterns can resemble different images. This is where the names of the drawings come from.
Photos of opals with different patterns
- Chinese writing is a design similar to Asian text. Usually golden-green in color and quite rare.
- Fern Leaf – The lacy patterns of fern leaves resemble a fern leaf. Mostly in larger green stones, less often in red ones.
- Tile - Stone has large, wide spots of color spaced close together. Much like a harlequin, but with larger patterns. Rare and highly prized.
- Flame - veins, streams and stripes of red fire moving along the surface of the stone.
- Floral patterns - a variety of repeating patterns and highlights, reminiscent of floral motifs and designs as if on the hem of a dress.
- Harlequin - also called mosaic: closely spaced wide spots with angular geometric multi-colored highlights. It is considered a valuable characteristic.
- Palette - plays with many colors and shades, reminiscent of an artist’s palette of colors.
- Peacock opal shimmers with predominantly green-blue hues, reminiscent of a peacock’s tail.
- Fire spots are tiny pinpoints of fire located close to each other. A fairly common and not the most valuable opal pattern.
- Rolling fire is a rare occurrence where the “fire” moves across a surface rather than flaring up in isolated spots and then going out.
- Ribbons are slightly curved, parallel stripes of color. Usually the drawing is on a black or dark background. Rarely seen.
- Straw - the pattern resembles flattened straws crossing each other. Rare variety.
- Windmill is a type of pattern in which the highlights are directed from the center to the edge of the stone and move like the hands of a clock (or a windmill) around a central point. A very rare type of drawing.
- Chaff - thin straight stripes of color.
- Flash is a play of color similar to flashes and flashes of light when moving a stone.
In 2008, NASA reported that opals had been discovered on Mars.

There are no special indications for how to wear sapphire. The stone goes well with emeralds and diamonds, and the step cut allows the gems to shine with all their colors. In summer, it is advisable to choose jewelry with red or yellow gold, and for winter, a frame made of white gold or platinum is more suitable.
Application
Star ruby is rarely found in nature, so all mined crystals are instantly sold out among jewelers and collectors.
The gem is processed into a cabochon, after which it is inserted into earrings, rings, pendants, bracelets and men's rings. Silver is used as a frame, which emphasizes the beauty of the stone and the radiance of the star. Star ruby jewelry is not produced in series. Basically, these are handmade products made to order by jewelers.
Unusual stones are in demand among collectors.
Of particular value are rubies in which the star has 12 or 24 rays, as well as crystals with a high degree of transparency.
Favorable time to buy
A lunar gem will not only be a decoration, but also a magical assistant and doctor if it is bought, brought into the house and started to be used on a certain lunar day:
Type of stone | Purchase (lunar day) | Beginning of use (lunar day) |
adularia | 2 | 16 |
Labrador | 5 | 19 |
selenite | 13 | 27 |
belomorite | 14 | 28 |
How to care for stone
Star ruby, like all gemstones, should be treated with care. It should be stored separately from other minerals and away from sunlight. A box with soft upholstery inside or a velvety bag is suitable for this.
The stone is not recommended to be worn in everyday life, while cleaning or playing sports. Wear jewelry with it after applying perfume and cosmetics.
If the surface is dirty, clean the mineral with a soap solution using a brush with soft bristles. Rinse it in warm water, then dry it and polish it with a flannel cloth.
In terms of hardness, ruby is second only to diamond. It is almost impossible to scratch or break if dropped, but a strong impact can cause it to break.
Jewelry with mineral
Jewelry with moonstone
According to legend, a piece of the moon that fell to Earth brought with it its power, so people began to wear jewelry that protected their owners. The gem began to be actively used in jewelry production at the beginning of the twentieth century with the light hand of the trendsetter, the French designer Rene Lalique.
The gem is very delicate and fragile. It is necessary to protect the decoration from mechanical damage. They shine with a soft glow from the very depths, shimmering with white and blue shine. It's hard to take your eyes off them. Various decorations are made from the mineral:
- brooches;
- rings;
- earrings;
- bracelets;

- beads
The gem is combined with many semi-precious, precious and ornamental stones:

How to spot a fake
Star Ruby Ring
True star rubies are rarely found in nature and mining them is a difficult process. These factors affect the formation of high prices and demand. Taking this into account, in laboratory conditions they began to produce artificial samples from corundum alloy, similar in properties, but more affordable.
There are also a large number of fake star rubies on the stone market, made from cheap synthetic materials - glass and polymer. Even an inexperienced buyer can find the difference between them and stones of natural origin. To do this, you should pay attention to several signs:
- if a natural gem is dipped into milk for a short time, the liquid will acquire a pale pink tint;
- the structure of a star ruby contains zigzag cracks, while painted glass or plastic does not have any defects;
- under the influence of a stream of violet light, the fake stone acquires a red-orange color;
- The coolness of a real ruby is pleasant to the touch; even when exposed to heat, it persists for a long time.
Origin of sapphire
The Tamils (the peoples of Southeast Asia) were the first to discover this gem. They often found in the immediate vicinity incredibly hard and durable opaque stones, which they nicknamed “corundam”. Sapphire is an incredible mineral, second only to diamond in hardness.
The oldest deposit is located in Sri Lanka. This mysterious crystal is considered a national treasure and the hallmark of the island. Here you can find a unique purple sapphire or an equally rare “cat’s eye”. Yellow and orange colored stones are also common.
Today, sapphire is most often found in the USA, Australia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The Earth has given this gem to all continents except Antarctica. Since the color of the stone directly depends on the deposit, it is quite easy to understand where a particular mineral comes from. For example, Ural pebbles are most often transparent or with a slight gray tint. And the black color of Australian crystals amazes the most famous jewelers in the world. Minerals mined in Thailand delight with all shades of green.
Star Ruby and Zodiac Signs
A star ruby will never harm an ambitious and decent person, but this does not mean that it is suitable for all representatives of the Zodiac system.
The stone has ideal compatibility with Leo, Aries, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Cancer:
- With the help of the mineral, Leos can strengthen willpower and increase the desire to achieve goals;
- ruby will bring liveliness and variety to the life of Aries;
- Sagittarius will develop their sociability, which will attract new acquaintances, become more reasonable and accommodating;
- Capricorns, with the help of a star gem, will be able to strengthen their inherent self-confidence and determination;
- For Cancers who are insecure, the star ruby will push them to take action.
It is not recommended for Taurus and Libra to wear this stone. Representatives of these signs can be misled by the gem and sent down the wrong path.
The stone is not contraindicated for Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces. They can wear jewelry with a stone, but it will not show any pronounced properties in relation to them.
A piece of heaven in a world of precious stones and shining gems
Cornflower blue, deep blue... it seems that the sky was reflected in the sapphires and remained inside for centuries. For this heavenly color they were called “sapphire”, which literally means “blue stone”. Since ancient times, this mineral has become a symbol of spirituality. Once upon a time, the sacred sapphire was dedicated to the father of the gods - Zeus. There is a legend that the seal of the wise and fair King Solomon was made from this blue stone. In Rus', this mineral was called “azure yacht”. And today in the global jewelry market, sapphire is valued on a par with diamond, ruby and emerald.
