Most often, tektites are not fragments of the meteorites themselves, but pieces of rocks of terrestrial origin, melted as a result of a meteorite impact on the earth. Tektites consist mainly of silicon dioxide (68-82%). In appearance and properties they are slightly reminiscent of obsidian, but differ from it in chemical composition. The possible presence of tektites is indicated by young craters formed as a result of meteorite falls.

In terms of chemical composition, tektites are close to terrestrial igneous sedimentary rocks with a high silica content of 68-82%. Their most distinguishing feature is their extremely low water content - 0.0005-0.001% (bottle glass contains 0.02%). According to this parameter, tektites have no analogues among terrestrial stones, meteorites and impactites. Even nuclear impactites (glasses formed during underground nuclear explosions) have a higher water content and contain mineral inclusions. Numerous studies have established that tektites were formed as a result of high-energy pulsed heating (>>2000K) and subsequent rapid cooling. Some tektites bear obvious traces of exposure to high-speed gas flows. The ages of tektites, by geological standards, are small - from 0.6 to 35 million years.

Tektites are very diverse in shape: fragments, flanged buttons, dumbbells, boats, tears, hollow thin-walled balls, cores, disks and plates, arrows, pear-shaped, beans and trilobites. The age of tektites ranges from several tens of thousands of years (Nizhny Novgorod tektites) to 36 million years (bediasites). Interestingly, the meteor shower occurred in the Nizhny Novgorod region only a few decades ago. Radiometric dating was not carried out among the Kanskites and Protvanites.

Tektite tolerates polishing well due to its high hardness and density. Therefore, they make it from:

  • pendants (from 1500 rubles to 4650);
  • beads (from 1900 rubles to 7200);
  • earrings (from 3500 rubles to 9707.92);
  • rings (from 2500 rubles to 35000);
  • bracelets (from 900 rubles to 4000).

A large part of the cost of products can be the cut metal, especially if it is silver or gold.

Tektite is most often worn for healing or magical purposes, so amulets from it are often made by hand. In this case, tektite beads are bought and the intended amulet is woven. The price of beads ranges from 38 to 67 rubles per piece, depending on the size.
